For those developers, Google is now hosting a number of tutorials that teach developers how to get the most out of Google+ on iOS.

Last week, Google showed developers how to integrate Google+ Sign-In on iOS.

In its second quarter earnings report, Apple says that it made $43.6 billion in revenue and $9.5 billion in profit. Apple pulled in more revenue than Q2 2012′s $39.2 billion, but it made less than last year’s $11.6 billion profit. The company also noted that 66 percent of its revenue came from international sales.

“We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline.”

For hardware, Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones in the quarter. It’s a noticeable increase from the 35.1 million iPhones sold in the year-ago quarter. It also sold 19.5 million iPads, which is a pretty sizable increase from the 11.8 million iPads sold in the year-ago quarter. The company’s saw a small decrease as it sold a little under 4 million Macs compared to the year-ago quarter’s 4 million Macs.

“Our cash generation remains very strong, with $12.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter and an ending cash balance of $145 billion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO.

Apple expects the following earnings results for Q3 2013:

revenue between $33.5 billion and $35.5 billion

gross margin between 36 percent and 37 percent

operating expenses between $3.85 billion and $3.95 billion

other income/(expense) of $300 million

tax rate of 26%

Apple will be be live streaming its Q2 2013 financial results conference call today at 2:00 p.m. PST/5:00 p.m. EST. You can listen in here.

iPad users in Kansas City, rejoice! Starting today, you’ll be able to control your Google Fiber TV with your device, just like Android users.

Google has just released the Google Fiber TV app on iPad. This is the first time that it has appeared for iOS, but it is still not available for iPhone yet.

The Google Fiber TV app lets users find new TV shows and movies, as well as record directly to their DVR. Google says that iPad users can use the app to browse, buy, and watch on-demand content as well.

Android device owners have had this capability for just over a month.

Of course, this announcement only affects a pretty small group of people – iPad users in the Kansas City area. But that’s going to change soon as Google has announced plans to expand their Fiber service to Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

Last week, Google announced that they were finally bringing HBO and Cinemax to Fiber TV.

You can grab the app today in the App Store.

The competitive landscape surrounding Google gets more and more interesting by the day. Now two of its rivals, one of which is being run by someone who probably knows Google’s inner workings more intimately than most of its current employees, are talking about teaming up.

Apple and Yahoo are said to be in talks about possibly integrating Yahoo products more into iOS, the the operating system powering the iPhones, iPods and iPads in millions of hands.

Should Google be worried? What would you like to see out such a partnership? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Any increased integration of Yahoo into iOS would only add on to existing Yahoo Finance and weather data that come on the operating system today.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the two companies have been “discussing how more of Yahoo’s services can play a prominent role on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices,” citing people briefed on the matter. Such possibilities could include, according to the Journal’s sources, “more content from Yahoo News and its other web properties loaded onto Apple devices or available through an expanded Siri partnership.”

A deal is not imminent, the report says.

The Journal isn’t the only publication with sources talking about this. Bloomberg cites “a person familiar with the matter” as saying executives from both companies have “discussed ways to collaborate more closely on mobile software”:

Yahoo Chief Executive Officer (and longtime Googler) Marissa Mayer has met with Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet services, to explore ways Yahoo can be more deeply integrated into the software that runs on the iPhone and iPad, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Mayer has been very clear about how important mobile is to the company’s strategy going forward since she took over as CEO last year. This would obviously be a huge step in making sure smartphone users are accessing Yahoo content on a regular basis. Depending on what kinds of integrations we see, it could turn out to be a pretty big deal for Yahoo’s piece of the search market as well, and would give Yahoo an interesting partner should the Microsoft alliance fall apart.

The part about Siri is particularly interesting, and that could mean any number of things. One thing it can at least enable us to imagine is a search-related partnership. Yahoo, of course, outsources its search to Bing on the back-end, but Yahoo’s relationship with Microsoft seems to be souring. Apple’s with Google, meanwhile, is too.

Yahoo has expressed how important search still is to it as a company in recent months, and now they have one of the biggest names in the search industry running the show. It was a different story when Yahoo went the Bing route.

The Motley Fool even makes an interesting case for why Apple should (but probably won’t) just buy Yahoo. “Yahoo! already provides some of the default iOS apps for stock quotes and weather. Perhaps more importantly, Yahoo! isn’t Microsoft or Google,” writes Rick Munarriz. “Mr. Softy and Big G are Apple’s two biggest rivals, though these days Google has become the bigger enemy as Android conquers the smartphone and now tablet markets. Apple tried to distance itself from Google last year, going with a homegrown default solution to Apple Maps.”

“Right,” he continues. “We know how badly that played out for Apple. Any bone that Apple could throw Yahoo! is one less bone that it would either throw out to Google or possibly mess up on its own.”

I don’t expect any acquisition announcements to be made anytime soon, but it’s interesting to consider.

Even with the right partnership between Apple and Yahoo, Google could suffer significantly in terms of search market share. Let’s not forget that Yahoo used to rule the search space, and now it has a seasoned veteran from the current king of search running the show. What if iOS made its way to using Yahoo as the default search? How many would bother to change it to Google?

Google and Apple have had a search deal in place for about a decade. Few details are known about this deal. Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land recently shared a couple of analysts’ theories:

An analyst at Macquarie Capital estimated that Google was making $1.3 billion annually in paid search revenue from iOS devices. Macquarie speculated that Google returned about $1 billion of that to Apple as part of the agreement that made Google the default search engine on the Safari browser….Another financial analyst has come up with a similar annual estimate of the value of Google’s default iOS search deal with Apple: $1 billion. Morgan Stanley’s Scott Devitt is responsible for the new estimate…Devitt disagreed with Macquarie, arguing that the structure of the relationship is probably not a “revenue sharing” deal but instead a straight fee-per-device payment from Google to Apple. Devitt believes that Google pays Apple roughly $3.20 per iOS device, which would avoid the accounting issues arising from a revenue sharing agreement.

Sterling himself wrote, “While it’s extremely unlikely that Apple would try and make Siri into a full-fledged search engine, it could significantly beef up Siri’s content search and discovery capabilities. In that capacity, Apple might be able to siphon off selected commercial queries in key categories such as local, travel and entertainment.”

As we have discussed repeatedly, including in this recent article, the biggest threat to Google’s search market share is the gradual chipping away at it by various vertical services. Even if Yahoo only supplied some of the content on Siri (regardless of whether it became the actual default search on iOS), Siri could continue to improve with increased integration across other services, and rendering Google less of a need for users, little by little.

Obviously, how this really plays out is anybody’s guess. Apple and Yahoo may not even expand their partnership at all, when it’s all said and done. Still, if I were Google, I might be a little nervous about what these companies are discussing.

Should Google be worried? Let us know what you think.

Mind blown yet?

The images do appear to confirm recent reports of a redesign. As Zach Epstein at BGR notes, “An image of the new iPad’s purported rear shell was published this past January, showing a redesigned case that closely resembles the iPad mini.”

Recent rumors have suggested that fifth-generation iPads will begin production in July or August.

Injustice: Gods Among Us, the DC fighter from NetherRealm Studios, isn’t set to launch on consoles until April 26. If you really need your Injustice fix now, however, you might want to try the recently released game for iOS.

Thankfully, the iOS version of Injustice isn’t a poorly constructed fighting game for mobile platforms. Instead, the team has created a thoughtful title that combines the cinematic fights of its console brother with an accessible collectible card game mechanic that players can use to level up their fighters.

As an added bonus, Injustice for iOS unlocks exclusive content in the console version of the game. It’s not being said what can be unlocked, but it’s probably a few costumes or other aesthetic rewards. Still, it’s better than nothing.

You can grab Injustice for iOS here. It’s a free-to-play title supported by microtransactions that aren’t exactly micro. There’s something definitely wrong when an in-game item costs $100, but that debate is for another time.

ABC 10 News out of Little Rock reports:

Engstrom says the woman is taking “selfies” — or self portraits — with the iPad.

She probably has no idea that her pictures are backing up to my iPhone, Engstrom said.

So far, he’s received more than a dozen photos.

Engstrom is not only having fun viewing the photos with his family, however. He’s taking it a step further and uploading them to Facebook for the world to enjoy. Here are some he shared on Facebook along with the captions he provided:

Hey cool! This is an actual pic of the wonderful person who stole my iPad. Apparently the pics she is taking of herself are backing up and appearing on my phone. No I’m not kidding, this is really happening. — with Ugly McCrazy Shirt.

Looking right… Camera still works when you are looking away!

The wonderful person who snaked my iPad continues to take glamour shots of herself apparently unaware that they are backing up to my iPhone. So naturally I’m blasting them out to the entire world. Enjoy!

The pictures are already generating a great deal of buzz on the web, and are even hitting the search trends. I wonder how long it will be until the the subject of the photos sees them in an article like this.

Android devices may be locked in a heated battle for supremacy with the iPhone, but the iPad has never really had much competition. Cheaper devices, like the Nexus 7, has ensured that some players find some form of success, but Apple is still the company to beat in the tablet market. That all may change this year.

IDC released a revised tablet market forecast for the year today with the major takeaway being that Android tablets may finally become the dominant player in the market. The availability of cheap tablets, most noticeably Android tablets, will lead to tablet shipments to see a sizable increase this year.

The firm predicts that the worldwide tablet market will ship 190.9 million devices over the course of this year with Android making up 48.8 percent of the shipments. Apple isn’t too far behind, however, with 46 percent of total shipments. Android may become the dominant player this year thanks to the wide breadth of options available, but it’s incredibly impressive to see Apple stand toe-to-toe in shipments with only three models.

Both iOS and Android will see some losses in their marketshare over the next five years as Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets start to take hold. IDC predicts, however, that these Windows tablets will be much like their Windows Phone 8 counterparts – a distant third place with Windows 8 tablets expected to only command 7.4 percent of the market by 2017.

“Microsoft’s decision to push two different tablet operating systems, Windows 8 and Windows RT, has yielded poor results in the market so far,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets. “Consumers aren’t buying Windows RT’s value proposition, and long term we think Microsoft and its partners would be better served by focusing their attention on improving Windows 8. Such a focus could drive better share growth in the tablet category down the road.”

Those who prefer eReaders over tablets may not like what’s coming next as IDC’s final prediction for the next five years sees the tablet precursors only having a few more years of growth ahead of it before the market starts an irreversible downward trend in 2015. By then, however, most consumers will have probably switched to multimedia tablets as the market will drive down prices to super affordable levels by then.

Following yesterday’s rumor of an August 2013 release for the iPhone 5S, iMore reports that another source has confirmed the information. That’s now two reports saying that we should expect the iPhone in August. All of this could turn out false, but two reports confirming the same month seems pretty legitimate.

Aside from launch date rumors, the iPhone 5S’ general design is also touched upon. It’s reported that the 5S will have the same basic design of the current iPhone 5, but feature a spec bump comparable to the bump seen between the iPhone 4 and 4S. It’s specifically mentioned that the iPhone 5S will be getting a better camera, and hopefully one that doesn’t suffer from purple tint.

Interestingly enough, iMore is reporting that Apple may be revealing its next iPad in April. We’ve already heard that the next iPad would be a marked improvement over last year’s surprising, but underwhelming, fourth generation iPad.

It’s also rumored that the company will announce a new iPad Mini next month as well, but it’s unknown if it will feature a retina display.

I don’t know if we should expect a new iPad this early in the year, but Apple has generally announced at least one major product during the first few months of the past few years. Last year’s announcement was for the expansion of iBooks into educational materials, and a similar announcement, alongside new iPads to compliment the feature, would make sense for this year.

In products that are so simple that they’re kind of genius news, I’m probably going to spend a few bucks and grab this new wooden spoon/stylus for my kitchen.

As sites like CHOW, Food 52, and even All Recipes as well as apps like Epicurious continue to replace traditional recipe books for many home cooks, sticky, contaminated iPads and other touchscreen devices become more and more of a problem.

For $7, you can avoid most of this hassle. Meet the ispoon kitchen stylus, a wooden spoon that doubles as a stylus for your in-kitchen touchscreen-using needs.

Just imagine: You grab a handful of ground beef and throw it in the skillet. You grab your wooden spoon to start breaking it up. Oh crap, how much cumin was I supposed to put in there? Now you can either wash your hands, or you can just flip over your spoon and tap your screen to find your answer. Hooray! No more E. coli on your iPad!

Sure, you could wash or wipe your hands between contacting your cooking ingredients and checking the recipe on your iPad. In this regard, this isn’t an essential product. But damnit, it’s cool and I want it.
