Apple is giving its users more search choices with its upcoming operating system releases – iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. Both were unveiled at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday.

In the iOS 7 demo, it was revealed that Siri has some new features, and among them are Bing web search results, not to mention Twitter search and Wikipedia content. In addition to potentially making Bing more of a factor in users’ search habits, the features also help Apple better compete with Google’s (and Android’s) conversational search and Knowledge Graph.

But that’s not all that Apple has done with search. While the company didn’t exactly announce it, it has also made Russian search engine Yandex available as an option in Safari in both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. This is the case in Russia, Ukraine and Turkey, where that search engine already has a substantial user base.

Now, Apple hasn’t gone so far as to make Yandex the default search in these countries, at least not in the beta that developers have gotten their hands on.

This signals that Apple isn’t ready to completely abandon Google just yet, despite the increasingly rocky relationship between the two companies. If you’ll recall, Apple recently dropped Google Maps for its own Maps product, and some have speculated that it’s only a matter of time before Google is no longer the default search on Apple products.

That could still happen, and we could just be in the early stages of Apple phasing it out. TechCrunch reported earlier this year, however, that Google could pay Apple $1 billion next year to remain the default search engine on iOS. How much would Microsoft pay? Or Yandex?

[via GigaOm]

It was pretty much an inevitability that Apple would show off iOS 7 today. After announcing all the new features coming to OS X and MacBook Air, Apple finally took the wraps off its new mobile OS. Before getting to …

It was pretty much an inevitability that Apple would show off iOS 7 today. After announcing all the new features coming to OS X and MacBook Air, Apple finally took the wraps off its new mobile OS.

Before getting to that, though, Tim Cook took us through some stats about iOS. First and foremost, there have been 600 million iOS devices sold since the first iPhone was introduced. Compare that to Android’s 900 million Android device activations, and it becomes pretty impressive for just two device lines.

Cook then decided to take a few swipes at Android with stats like iPhone users use their device 50 percent more than Android users use theirs. iOS also has 60 percent of the mobile Web share and iOS users took advantage of mobile shopping more than anybody else on Black Friday in 2012.

On a final stat note, Cook noted that 93 percent of iOS users were on iOS 6. He used that to take a dig at Android and its well-publicized fragmentation.

After all of that, Cook announced iOS 7 and showed off its logo. He then introduced it with a video narrated by Jon Ive. He says that iOS 7 is completely redesigned with all new colors, layers that establish hierarchy, and live backgrounds for the lock screen and apps.

Apple then spent the rest of their time with iOS 7 talking about 10 specific updated features:

The first is Control Center. The new Control Center is accessed by swiping up from the bottom. It includes everything you need for basic control of your phone and your music player.

With multitasking, Apple is bringing the feature to every app on iOS 7. It also notices when you use apps and then predicts when you’re going to use those apps. Before you use those apps, it will update them with new info in the background.

Safari gets full screen browsing, a smart search field and a new tab interface. In even bigger news, Safari on iOS is no longer limited to 8 tabs.

AirDrop is a new feature that’s obviously an answer to Google’s Hangouts app. It picks up friends who are close by, and lets you share photos and other information with those friends. It delivers all this information securely over encrypted signals.

The camera has been updated with four cameras in one. One of those is a live photo filter.

Siri receives a substantial update that features a new interface, newly updated voice with a male voice option. It also integrates with your photos and Bing search.

Speaking of Siri, Apple is bringing it to the car with iOS in the car. The app will integrate with cars that support the feature by bringing Siri voice commands to a number of applications.

The App Store will receive a a new design. It will also alert you to popular apps in your area and you can sort apps by age ranges. The App Store will also update all of your apps automatically.

After months of rumors, the Music app will get iTunes Radio in iOS 7. It’s a free ad-supported radio service that’s integrated into the music app. The Music app also includes a redesign that includes artist pictures.

The final major feature is called Activation Lock. It will hopefully deter would be iPhone thieves by requiring a thief to know your AppleID when trying to activate your phone. Activation Lock will remain active even if the phone is wiped.

iOS 7 will be available in beta to developers today. It will initially only be available on the iPhone 4 and later. It will be coming to iPad 2 and later, and the iPad Mini in the coming weeks. It will also be available on the 5th generation iPod Touch.

The latest generation of iOS will be available to iPhone owners this fall. The iPhone 5S, or iPhone 6, is expected to launch at that time as well.

While demonstrating iOS 7 at the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced some new Siri features. Among them, integration of Bing web search results.

Siri has a new interface, and even a new male voice. It now understands more types of commands, such as:

“Play last voicemail”

“Increase brightness”

“What is John Appleseed saying?”

“Tell me about surfing”

“What are the best beaches for surfing?”

In addition to the Bing web search results, it now has Wikipedia integration, which should make it significantly more Knowledge Graph-like. Google’s Knowledge Graph, as you may know draws from Wikipedia a great deal. The new features should reduce the gap between the two offerings.

You can also search Twitter with Siri now.

Update: Here’s what Apple says about Siri in the iOS 7 press release:

Siri sounds better than ever with new male and female voices and includes Twitter search integration, so you can ask Siri what people are saying on Twitter*. Siri also now has Wikipedia integration, providing access to the world’s most popular Internet reference site. Siri offers Bing web search within the app and the ability to change device settings and play back voicemail.

To open the WWDC keynote, Tim Cook invited a robotics startup called Anki to the stage. The company showed off what it called a “video game in the real world” for iOS.

The first product out of Anki is called Anki Drive. It’s a collection of AI-controlled race cars that learn and adapt as they drive around a track. The most interesting part about all of this is that the cars are not only controlled by iOS devices, but the brains of the cars are also housed in the iOS app.

Anki Drive is only the first of many products that the the folks at Anki want to make for iOS devices. They want to bring artificial intelligence, robotics and more to iOS users around the world.

At the end of the presentation, the Anki folks said that Anki Drive will be sold exclusively at Apple Stores later this year for around $200. It’s unknown if Apple is funding the development of Anki, but it’s a cool enough concept. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple getting into artificial intelligence development for Siri and other services.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a reboot done right. It respected the vision of the original title, while updating the gameplay and presentation to modern standards. By all accounts, it was a massive success. Now Square Enix is trying to capitalize on that success with a new entry for mobile devices.

Deus Ex: The Fall, developed by Square Enix’ mobile division and Eidos Montreal, is the latest title in the blockbuster franchise. The title will focus on a new character – Ben Saxon – as he attempts to uncover a global drug supply conspiracy.

The title may prove to be controversial, however, as it’s a mobile exclusive title. That being said, the developers are confident that they can deliver the Deus Ex experience on mobile devices.

“We’re really excited to continue the Deus Ex series on mobile and start a new journey”, said Jean-François Dugas, Executive Game Director at Eidos-Montréal. “The team has done an incredible job creating a whole new story and controls for intuitive touch screen gameplay, whilst staying true to the Deus Ex universe. Players can expect exploration, action, hacking, stealth, social enhancers, player choice and consequence – the full Deus Ex experience.”

Deus Ex: The Fall looks great for a mobile title, but some people will not be able to get around that fact. For them, Square Enix is also releasing Deux Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut in the near future. The Wii U title improves upon many aspects of the original game, including the terrible boss fights.

Deus Ex: The Fall will be released this summer on iOS devices for $6.99. There’s no word on an Android release.

PopCap, developers behind Bejeweled and other casual games, had never really created a game that could appeal to casual players as well as hardcore gamers. That all changed in 2009 with a simple tower defense title that pitted plants against invading hordes of zombies.

Now four years later, PopCap is back to capitalize on the success of Plants vs. Zombies with the title’s first proper sequel – Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time. The title could be referring to the fact that it’s been four years since the first game came out, but it’s probably alluding more to how time travel plays a large role in the game’s presentation.

Plants Vs. Zombies 2 will launch exclusively on iOS devices as a freemium title in July. As you can imagine, the news did not go over super well with the desktop players who made the original game such a big hit in the first place. Most of the comments on YouTube are players deriding EA and PopCap for their decision.

“In Google’s DNA, we wanted to be universally accessible. The goal with search was to make it work for everyone in the world, and I think that philosophy extends today. We brought Google Now to iOS. A couple weeks from now we will launch Google Play Music All Access for iOS, the teams are working like crazy to do it,” he said.

TechCrunch notes that Pichai made a point to say that Google wants its services on as many devices as possible, and that mean that iOS users can then become Google users.

“In Google’s fundamental DNA, we want [our services] to be universally accessible…for us, users on iOS who want to use Google services, we want them to be Google users.”

On the flip side, speaking at the same conference earlier this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook suggested that Apple wasn’t against porting its own apps to Android – at least on a base level. It’s just that it doesn’t want to right now.

“Would Apple port an app from iOS to Android? We have no religious issue,” he said. “If we thought it made sense to do that, we would do that. You can take the same philosophy and apply it to iCloud. Would it make sense for iCloud? It doesn’t today.”

As you probably know, Google launched their new Spotify competitor Google Play Music All Access earlier this month. For $9.99 a month, you can have full streaming access to millions of songs, all of which play well with your existing Google Play music in order to deliver radio and recommendations. You can check out my full walkthrough of the service here.

What’s black, white and flat all over? iOS 7 if some reports are to be believed.

Sources close to Apple told 9to5Mac that the next iteration of Apple’s iOS software will be getting a complete redesign. That redesign will predominantly sport black and white colors while toning down on the textured look that iOS has been known for since its inception in 2007.

Apple Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive (aka the guy who designed the iPhone hardware) is now in charge of the iOS7 overhaul. He is expected to bring the simplistic design of his hardware to iOS 7. He reportedly feels that Apple’s iOS has become complicated in recent years with different visual designs for different apps. His design would unite all of Apple’s software under a common aesthetic principle while retaining the simplicity of use iOS fans have come to expect.

Ive’s new black and white approach to UI design will find its way into pretty much every facet of the next iteration of iOS. Some examples include a lock screen that’s no longer transparent, notifications that ditch the current leather look in favor of a white text on black background, and the home screen will be removing gradient textures from backgrounds and app icons.

Speaking of apps, all of Apple’s apps have reportedly been redesigned with the new black and white look in mind. One example is the Notes app, which currently features a yellow notepad look. The new design will likely feature a simplistic white look with black text.

Outside of design, the new mobile OS will also reportedly include integration with Flickr and Vimeo.

We’re likely to see if the above rumors are true at Apple’s WWDC keynote on June 10. The developer-focused event will likely not feature a lot of new hardware (sorry iPhone fans), but we’ll probably get our first look at iOS 7 and the next version of Mac OS X.

Foursquare has just released an update to their iOS app that lets users apply more filters to all of their searches.

“Looking for a cheap brunch spot that your friends go to, but you haven’t tried yet? With new filtering options in Explore, you can narrow down your search results to find exactly what you’re looking for. Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, then select different options like, ‘price,’ ‘haven’t been,’ ‘saved’ or ‘open now’ to find the perfect spot,” says Foursquare.

Before today’s update, Foursquare allowed users to narrow their searches in variety of ways – by category, trending places, recently opened locations, place they haven’t been before, places friends have been, and so on. With today’s update, Foursquare is letting users narrow their searches through multiple filters.

Here’s what the new filter screen looks like. It’s accesible via a “filter” button when open up the search box.

As you can see, users can now apply different filters at the same time, including price, previous check-ins, open now, and locations that are currently offering specials. You can sort your results by best match of by distance.

Minor update? Maybe. But it’s a useful one. And it also falls in line with Foursquare’s recent push to become a true player in the local search game.

You can grab the update today over at the App Store.
