Last.FM has added a new on demand song streaming service with the support from all four major labels and 150,000 indie labels and artists from distributors including The Orchard, CD Baby, IODA, Naxos.

Users can listen to a track free up to three times, after which they are pointed iTunes, Amazon or 7Digital for purchase.

The free on demand service launched Wednesday in the US, UK and Germany and is scheduled to roll out globally in the coming months

The site also launched a new program for artists not signed with a label. They can upload their music to Last.fm and will receive payment every time a tracks is played. This allows acts without a traditional recording or publishing deal to offer their music free while still generating revenue.

"We’re building a platform to help redesign the music economy, enabling artists and labels to earn revenue according to how people listen, rather than how they buy," said Last.fm’s other co-founder, Felix Miller. "Now we can offer the arrangement to unsigned music creators too. For the first time, anyone can upload tracks and get paid when those tracks are played. It’s a whole different model – one that benefits the artists, labels and advertisers – but most of all the listeners."

COMMENTARY -

Napster had launched a similar service only to pull back after a year. But the move goes a long way in differentiating Last.FM from Pandora and other competitors although it may not be enough to make someone switch services. It will be most interesting to watch how others in the sector react.

IODA, a digital distribution company for the independent music community, has announced a new service, which will allow independent record, labels to sell digital music directly to consumers on label and artist Web sites.

The company has partnered with DownloadCentric to offer the service to its label, distributor and artist clients. They will use the platform to create customized storefronts, which will facilitate direct-to- fan sales.

"We are extremely excited to be able to offer our labels a direct to consumer channel," said Tim Mitchell, Vice President of Marketing, IODA. "The integration into our existing platform will make it extremely simple and efficient, and DownloadCentric’s sophisticated platform and technical strength are a perfect match for IODA."

Labels will be able to customize their storefronts with their label or artist branding, allowing for integration into existing Web sites.

Because labels will be selling music directly to fans they will have more control over their music. They will be able to set their own prices for tracks and albums. Have bundling options and offer compilations. Labels will also have access to demographic information and will be able to have direct contact with fans.

"Offering digital music directly to fans on the very websites where they already interact with labels and artists is a natural for independent record labels. DownloadCentric is excited to be powering IODA’s white label download store service," says Sasha Haghani, Vice President of Business Development at DownloadCentric. "Using this fully-integrated service, IODA’s 3,000+ record labels can easily and quickly setup multiple storefronts which utilize their custom-branded look and feel, with virtually no additional effort. And they can continue to use the same best-in-class IODA services they use today to manage their digital assets and receive payment. It couldn’t be easier."

IODA is an acronym: Independent Online Distribution Alliance. And, as you might expect of a new wave music company, they throw one hell of a party.

Just when those in attendance at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo were getting riled up at the shindig hosted by IODA, LiberatedSyndication, and Kiptronic, hotel security pooped on the whole thing.

Of course, there were naked painted women. Loud music. Water fights, I heard. And, rumor has it, a significant amount of gyratin’. This is California, after all.

The companies mentioned above are young, spirited, excited about the revolution brought about in cyberspace. Is anyone, at any of them, even 30 years old? I’m not sure.

But Corey Denis (pictured below), Promonet Community Manager for IODA, is quite jazzed about the power to promote and distribute independent music without the music industry.

No money, no problem. No polish, no problem. Not the latest fabricated and saturated target-market, bare midriff cookie cutter, guaranteed short-lived flash-in-the-pan, pump-and-dump starlet with no cult following but a billion-dollar smile? No problem.

Wasn’t that the point of this whole conference anyway? Power to the creatives. Power to the consumer to choose the buffet over the prix fixe menu.

IODA’s clients include record labels many probably haven’t heard much about: 1001 Ways, Abandoned Love Records, Absolutely Kosher, and Arabesque Recordings, just to select from the beginning of the alphabetical list.

Denis says IODA helps independent labels and musicians distribute their music to services like iTunes, eMusic, Napster, and Rhapsody, among other retailers. The company does the marketing through Promonet, sharing selected tracks with bloggers, podcasters, streaming radio, and lifestyle sites.

Account management is done through the tellingly-titled Rightsholder Dashboard, which allows clients to manage sales, catalog data, review licensing, approve and authorize distribution.

Just remember, if you attend one of their parties, it’s best to plan an escape route for when security shows up.
