Herb Kelleher was on my recent Southwest Airlines flight from San Antonio to Dallas – of all things! As you know, he was the president of Southwest, the man who made it a success. Then he resigned, I think he must be about 70, and is now Chairman of the Board. Whatever his title, he still considers himself “Southwest Airlines” and so will you if you ever meet him.

If you’ve been reading about Emotional Intelligence, the Catch-22 has probably occurred to you: Since EQ begins with self-awareness, the people who have the worst EQ are also going to be the worst at assessing their own.

During the late ’80s and early ’90s, I had the opportunity to work with expert systems in real-time production environments. I found artificial intelligence, or AI, to be thoroughly intriguing. I even went so far as to write an expert system package, under Microsoft Windows, called WindExS.

Remember that email rounding the Internet recently: “If we could shrink the Earth’s population to a village of 100 people, this is what it would look like: There would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 North and South Americans, and 8 Africans. Seventy people would be non-white; 30 white. Seventy would be non-Christian; 30 Christian ….”

My granddaughter is 5. Last time she smacked her little brother and I had words with her, she said, “I didn’t mean to hit him.” A preposterous statement since I’d seen her walk over, pick up a book and whack him with it. But then she’s only 5.

Bullying, mobbing and hostile workplace are not currently illegal in the US. However according to The Workplace Bullying and Trauma Institute (WBTI), the first legislation on bullying went to the California legislature (AB 1582) in February of this year.

Two emotions, or ways of feeling, are especially troublesome to most of us – anger management and depression. Depression appears to be epidemic now, globally, and without going into the etiology (the causes), or pinpointing definitions or degrees of severity (they vary; there are many) lets just say it’s one way of feeling really bad.

Years ago, I read a biography on Nikola Tesla. While I found many aspects of this great inventor’s life intriguing, the one thing that really made an impression on me was not his many inventions, not his significant contributions to science, and not even his incredible intelligence.

There is no shortage of new technology product announcements promising to be an answer to all your business intelligence needs. So what is BI and how can it provide competitive advantage in selling your products or services?

There are many good reasons to establish an Emotional Intelligence culture in your workplace. It helps with stress (Wall Street Journal, March 2003); helps you attract and retain the best employees; is a buffer against mobbing and hostile workplace; facilitates individual performance and team work (Goleman, Ph.D.); enables leaders; is highly correlated with better sales (Seligman, Ph.D.); relates to honesty, authenticity and ethics; increases creativity and flexibility for better coping with the velocity of change; helps employees communicate better; and can keep you from getting sued (Surgery, 2002).
