There’s a rumor floating around that Facebook is going to unveil video for Instagram at their upcoming event scheduled for Thursday, June 20th. It makes sense that Instagram would add video capabilities, considering the surge of the Twitter-owned Vine in recent months.

Well, developer Tom Waddington, who has a history of finding things hidden deep in Facebook code, thinks that he’s found proof that video is definitely coming to Instagram – at least at some point.

Here’s what Waddington found in Instagram code:

I decided to take a look at Instagram – the current app, the API and the website. Before long, I came across mentions of .tVideo and .tVideoIndicator CSS classes on profile pages…The sprites – a play/pause and volume/mute button, and their connection to videos in the markup seems to mean that Instagram video is a certainty. A mute button is the big giveaway on a photo-sharing app

He’s not sure that Instagram video is what Facebook is gearing up to unveil on Thursday, but he says this proves it’s on the way. One source recently told TechCrunch that Facebook’s big event would focus on Instagram, but it’s possible that Facebook could unveil any number of new products. It could even be some sort of news aggregator or RSS reader – Waddington recently found some code pointing in that direction too.

You know how Facebook is hosting another product event on June 20th? Well, according to TechCrunch, the product that’s going to be unveiled actually has something to do with Instagram, Facebook’s billion-dollar acquisition. Instagram may be getting video.

If true, it sounds like someone is looking to capitalize on, or at least steal thunder from, the success of Twitter’s 6-second video app Vine. According to TechCrunch’s source, as well as a previous report from former Reuters social media editor Matthew Keys, the new feature videos will let users record 5 to 10 second videos. Not much else was detailed, like whether or not the videos will have filters, or any other sort of quick-editing tools. But since it is Instagram we’re talking, it almost seems nuts that they would debut short videos without their signature filters.

Vine has been gaining momentum since its launch back in January, just recently launching on Android. Last week, we told you that Vine video shares had actually surpassed Instagram photo shares on Twitter for the first time ever. Even though that may be able to be explained by the fact that Instagram cut itself out of Twitter last year in order to direct people to the actual Instagram site, it’s still a indicator of Vine’s early success.

Other than this new Instagram videos rumor, we’ve speculated that Facebook could be looking to talk about an expanded presence for public conversations (on the heels of their big hashtag rollout), or even an RSS reader of sorts. Whatever the case, we’ll be covering the event. Facebook sent the event invites by snail mail, simply saying that “a small team has been working on a big idea.”

So…what’s the big idea?

In sentences that would have made absolutely no sense 10 years ago news, Vine videos have just surpassed Instagram photos in terms of how often they’re being shared on Twitter.

The switch occurred just days after Vine officially launched their Android app.

The data comes from social analytics company Topsy. Check out the graph:

On Friday, 2.5 million links to vine.co were shared on Twitter, compared to approximately 2.2 million links to instagram.com. Over the past few days, Vine shares have remained more frequent that Instagram shares.

We knew Vine was gaining in popularity, but this kind of a surprise – especially when you consider the fact that Vine only has 13 million registered users. Instagram has over 100 million monthly active users.

Call it a beginner’s bump for Vine if you want. The service did just launch on Android, and that means that a lot of eager users of the platform have been jumping at the chance to try it out. Maybe that initial buzz will die down, or maybe it won’t. But it’s hard to ignore one of the main differences between Vine and Instagram – their relationships with Twitter. While Vine (owned by Twitter) integrate seamlessly with Twitter, Instagram no longer shares that fruitful partnership.

[Topsy via Nick Bilton (Twitter) via Marketing Land]

No, Instagram isn’t going to delete your account. Keep filtering and carry on.

Thursday night, Instagram has some technical issues that caused some people to be locked out of their accounts. Rumors swirled that Instagram was deleting accounts – possibly to punish those who has violated the terms of service or to free up space.

What didn’t help was the @dontdeletemyig account, which popped up and soon garnered nearly 70,000 followers.

That account spread this hoax image across the network:

The #dontdeletemyaccount and #dontdeletemyig hashtags blew up on both Twitter and Instagram as some people worried that the photo-sharing site was taking drastic measures to purge users.

Why is everyone putting on black pictures with #dontdeletemyaccount on instagram

— Pocahontas (@j_harrington11) May 24, 2013

Instagram clarified the disruption as such:

Yesterday we experienced technical issues that caused people to be unable to access their accounts for a short period of time. We restored access as soon as the issue was brought to our attention, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Thank you for all your comments and reports to let us know about the problems you were experiencing. We’re always listening and we were able to fix this as quickly as we did because of your help.

Sorry for the hiccup! Thanks for your reports regarding yesterday’s technical issues. We’re back on track. help.instagram.com/165012027001436

— Instagram (@instagram) May 24, 2013

Remember: when people ask you to share something, there’s a good change that they’re full of it. Your Instagram account is safe – you know, unless you start posting porn or something.

You have always been able to tag users in Instagram posts, but two weeks ago Instagram announced that soon, you would be able to tag people in the photo itself.

The feature, called “Photos of You,” was given a two-week long soft launch period in which users could opt-in if they so chose. Today it has been turned on for everyone.

“We wanted to take a moment to remind you that – if you haven’t turned it on already—your Photos of You section on Instagram will become visible today to those who can currently see your profile. Remember, you can easily adjust your settings so nothing appears on your profile until you approve it,” says Instagram.

Instagram said that “many” users have already opted to turn the feature on, during the two-week soft launch.

All of the photos that you’re tagged in will now appear in a special new profile section, aptly titled “Photos of You.” As Instagram says, you’ll have full privacy control over this. You can adjust your settings to make sure Instagram asks you to approve any photo before it appears in the section.

Besides the creation of the new Photos of You section, this new feature clears up an irksome problem with Instagram tagging. Before, there was really no way of telling whether a photo’s @ mention was there to direct users to it, or if it meant that the user was actually present in the photo.

Hadouken, which was started by Japanese schoolgirls, involves photos that are made to look like special effects are going down in real life. The latest, though, is making rounds online because it looks pretty damn good. Check it out.

Instagram is borrowing another feature from Facebook today, as they are rolling out true people tagging for both iOS and Android.

With the updated apps, you’ll be able to add people to photos for the first time. All you have to do is snap your picture, apply your favorite filter, and in the publishing phase of the process you’ll see a new “Add People” button. From there, you can tag friends, businesses, or anyone and anything with a username.

Of course, you’ve always been able to tag people on Instagram. But before, the tagging system worked a lot like Twitter – you could @ mention users but that’s about it. There was really no way of telling whether the photo’s @ mention was simply there to direct the user to it, or if it meant that user was actually in the photo.

“Photos are memories of the people, places and moments that mean the most to us. We have always sought to give you simple and expressive ways to bring the stories behind your photos to life. Your captions and hashtags capture the ‘what?’ and your Photo Map answers the ‘where?’ but until today we’ve never quite been able to answer the ‘who?’” says Instagram.

All of the photos you’re tagged in will now appear in a new profile section called “Photos of You.” The new feature will have all the same privacy settings of Facebook photos – mainly you’ll be able to control whether or not any tagged photo appears in your Photos of You section. You can adjust your settings to make sure you have to approve every tagged photo before it pops up for everyone to see.

Instagram is giving users until May 16th to familiarize themselves with the tagging feature before everyone’s Photos of You sections go public.

This new feature comes in version 3.5 on both iOS and Android. This update also adds a “report a problem” button to the app and also puts your privacy settings accesible on your profile screen.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg briefly discussed Instagram at yesterday’s Q1 earnings call, and the takeaway is that big brands want more commercialization, but the Facebook-owned company is content with a growth strategy at the time being. That means no ads on Instagram…for now.

“They’re really doing well and growing quickly and that is the right focus for them,” Zuckerberg said. “They have the opportunity to…build community. I am really optimistic about the business and the opportunities.”

He went on to say that the addition of ads could possibly hamper Instagram’s growth. Instagram just surpassed 100 million monthly active users, and the photo-sharing app is growing at a faster rate than Facebook did at this time in its life.

According to Zuckerberg, it’s not that Instagram isn’t drawing any interest from businesses looking to advertise. “Big brands are approaching us,” he said.

You may remember that Facebook has to tread carefully when approaching the topic of ads on Instagram. Last year, Instagram users were up in arms over some proposed changes to the Instagram privacy policy. Originally, the company wanted to add this clause to the terms:

Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.

This led to a mostly misguided outrage that Instagram was going to sell users’ photos. What did deserve outrage was Instagram’s tricky, vague, lawyerly language that attempted to describe a future ad product that didn’t yet exist.

Co-founder Kevin Systrom ended up apologizing, saying they were wrong to put the cart before the horse.

“Going forward, rather than obtain permission from you to introduce possible advertising products we have not yet developed, we are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work.”

Instagram will be properly monetized, it’s inevitable. Facebook has already put way too much into the acquisition and Instagram is already such a powerful social channel. But for now, at least, it looks like Zuck is fine to let it grow.

Talk about perfect timing. And incredible luck.

Tampa Bay Rays reporter Kelly Nash almost got plunked in the back of the head with a baseball this past weekend. And the near miss was captured by a once-in-a-lifetime selfie and posted to Instagram.

As the story goes, Nash was in Boston working on a feature on the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Nash, she wanted to snap a photo atop the Green Monster in Fenway Park because her whole family is from Massachusetts.

“I knew they would be so excited to see me working at Fenway Park, and when I went to text them the picture I noticed the baseball by my head!” Nash told Fox Sports Florida.

Most dangerous selfie ever. That happened. @ Fenway Park instagram.com/p/YnywPVl8jP/

— Kelly Nash (@KNashSports) April 27, 2013

“I laughed pretty hard when I saw such a surreal picture that I had no idea I took. I thought, you have got to be kidding me, maybe there ARE really angels in the outfield. I actually brought the movie with me on the trip and had it in my bag at the game.”

Nash says that her producer found the ball and gave it to her, so at least she has some hard evidence of her near-serious injury experience.

Think the Angels in the Outfield saved me because I brought their DVD with me on the trip? #ThoughtSo instagram.com/p/YoGDoil8mc/

— Kelly Nash (@KNashSports) April 27, 2013

Just add this to the growing list of reasons that self-shots are rarely ever a good idea.
