The U.S. market for watching online video on TV is set to significantly increase, according to a new report from In-Stat.

Over 40 percent of young adult U.S. households view Internet video on TV at least once per month.

Revenue from Web-to-TV streaming services will grow to $2.9 billion in 2013.

"Once Web-to-TV video becomes simple and convenient, mass consumer adoption will follow quite rapidly," says Keith Nissen, In-Stat analyst.

"Our primary research shows that users want a variety of their consumer devices to enable a web-to-TV video experience."

In-Stat also found that within five years, the number of broadband households viewing Web-to-TV content will grow to 24 million.

Currently, 29 percent of 25 to 34 year olds with game consoles use the devices to watch streaming video off the Internet.

In five years, there will be 7.4 million broadband households that use media center PCs for streaming Web-to-TV content.

TV networks and cable operators currently view online TV as an additive to pay TV services, but Web -to- TV will cause a complete restructuring of today’s video services.

Video content will be optimized for broadcast or Web-to-TV based on content type.

The company estimates that consumer spending across these three segments could see an almost $5 billion decrease during the next 12 months. Despite this, In-Stat’s survey reveals that broadband service is among the most vital parts of consumers’ lives. Over 66 million consumers across demographic categories are using the Internet while they watch TV.

Gerry Kaufhold

Consumer multitasking while watching TV varies widely depending on demographic characteristics.

The largest decrease in spending on mobile, broadband and subscription TV services will come from households with income below $35,000.

"Some male age groups had 40% to 50% of respondents using a PC while watching TV, and about 30% of females under the age of 40 are also using a PC while watching TV," said Gerry Kaufhold, In-Stat analyst.

"New approaches using online web portals synchronized to a TV program will continue to develop, because they present no new costs. Cable TV operators also face increasing competition from lightweight services that deliver popular Cable programming, supplemented by content delivered via broadband."

As mobile operators have seen the average revenue per user (ARPU) fall, they have looked to increase revenue with value added services; however the most profitable data service is still text messaging, according to In-Stat.

Inexpensive, reliable, and easy for mobile users to operate, Short Message Service (SMS) and Multimedia Message Service (MMS) provide solid revenue streams for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

Frank Dickson

"SMS may be a basic, cheap technology, but it still has much life as a MNO cash cow," says Frank Dickson, In-Stat analyst.

"The keys to SMS profitability are its ease-of-use, inexpensive price tag, global reach, and increased reliability as infrastructure development increases in more rural global regions. In developed areas, however, it has become increasingly important for mobile operators to find ways to enhance and personalize the SMS service offering."

Users are sending more than 2 trillion mobile messages per day globally as of the end of 2008.

The In-Stat report found that consumers that use mobile messaging also significantly more voice minutes on average.

Along with paying for more value added services, U.S. mobile messengers are also likely to pay up to 25 percent more for their handsets.

Broadband over Powerline (BPL) has been steadily emerging over the past several years and the technology continues to grow. With no new cabling needed, broadband powerline networking is turning into a winner according to In-Stat’s "Powerline Home Networking 2007 Update: Gaining Power in the Global Market" report.

In-Stat said that global broadband powerline equipment based on the HomePlug, CEPCA and UPA powerline standards reached sales of 5.4 million units in 2006. Global growth for broadband powerline networking equipment will approach 100 percent in 2007.

"Management and conservation of energy has become the overriding driver for smart grid, utility applications, where both broadband and low-speed powerline communications will play a roll," says Joyce Putscher, In-Stat analyst.

"As a result, we expect solutions using HomePlug Command and Control solutions to emerge in a big way, although we envision many combination solutions evolving including powerline and low-speed wireless technologies."
