Everyone’s go-to site when it comes to stuff about film and TV has just launched their own trivia app, IMDB Trivia.

IMDB Trivia is a free-to-play app, meaning that it’s a free download and the game itself is free – but you can purchase additional question packages if you run out of the free stuff. Upon opening the app, you’ll be prompted to select your game pack. Only one will be available at first, but other game packs can be unlocked by completing challenges in the game like answering a certain number of questions or scoring a particular amount of points. You can, of course, buy more question packs in-app as well.

Each time you answer a question, you’ll get a little fun-fact about either the film, character, actors, or some other aspect of the question content. Some of the types of trivia exercises are reminiscent of games like Scene-It – name that quote, match that movie poster, and decipher the blurred celeb photo. Here’s a list of many of the game modes -

Five levels of increasing difficulty and many different ways to win

Catch a Star: Tap five correct answers before your time runs out

Movie Order: Arrange movies in order of release

Quotables: Match the quote to a movie, TV show, character or celebrity

Celebrity Photo Match: Match each of five celebrities with their movie, TV show, or character

Movie Poster Match: Match each of five posters with a movie or a TV show

Mystery celebrity: Guess the celebrity in a blurred photo

The app is integrated with Apple Game Center, so you can compete with friends. You can also pause and resume your trivia games anytime.

You can play without 3G or wi-fi access, but the question sets will be smaller. The two current trivia packs available to be purchased are “TV Favorites” and “Blockbuster Films.” They are both $0.99.

Currently, it’s only available for iOS.

Upon early testing, the app seems fun as hell. I don’t know about you, but I can see my phone battery dying at we speak.

"IMDb is one of the most recognized brands on the Internet, especially among movie enthusiasts.

In what seems like an obvious move now that it has happened, Amazon’s IMDB (Internet Movie Database) has added streaming videos to the site. Sure, they offered trailers before, but now we’re talking full-length movies and television shows.

IMDB has tapped CBS, Hulu, Sony Pictures Television, and over 500 independent filmmakers to provide the video, which so far includes hit shows like "24", "The Office", and "CSI", as well as old ones like "Beverly Hills 90210", "Star Trek", and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Also, courtesy of NBC and Hulu, users will be able to view some of the new Fall line-up premieres before they even air on television.

"IMDb’s mission has always been to be the world’s most comprehensive, user-friendly destination for all movie, TV and celebrity-related information, products and services," said Col Needham, founder and managing director of IMDB. "We’re excited to offer our users a simple online experience to watch full-length movies and TV episodes for free. Our goal is to show our users every movie and TV show on the Internet for free on IMDb.com."

To view the content, users can check out the featured content page, which will presumably be updated on a regular basis. Users can also search for a title like normal, and now there will be options on the movie’s page to view the videos if they exist for said title. There is a "Watch Now" button in the upper corner of the left-hand column, and a video box in the top section of the main page next to the trailer boxes.

If IMDB is successful with its goal of showing users every movie and TV show on the Internet for free, than the site will likely become the place to go for online video content. The site is already very popular just for looking up information about movies, and with the actual content there, it will be bigger than ever. With IMDB being a subsidiary of Amazon, I wouldn’t be surprised to see fee-based streaming new releases end up on the site either.

Amazon has stolen away Microsoft senior ad exec Lisa Ultzschneider leaving us all to wonder just what kind of advertising aspirations the company has.

Amazon has not commented on what kind of plans it has for Ultzschneider. Rick Aristotle Muarriz at Fool.com speculates that it won’t much involve Amazon.com, but likely the company’s other properties:

Amazon is unlikely to ramp up advertising on its namesake marketplace, but the rules are different for its other dot-com traffic magnets, such as movie hub IMDB.com and Web-trends monitor Alexa.com. Its other recent Web endeavors include the acquisition of booklovers’ social network Shelfari and the launch of its SoundUnwound music wiki.

There’s a lot of billable ad space there for the monetizing. One has to imagine that Amazon’s Askville site or even its A9.com search engine could become higher priorities, if the company had the ad inventory to truly milk the most out of its page views.

That huge background ad spot that IMDB has been utilizing lately is surely a hot property. That is if they’re still using it. I don’t see one of the giant ads on there today.

Despite Amazon’s relative silence on their advertising plans, one can’t help but notice that they seem to be planning something. Valleywag notes that they have been beefing up their NY ad sales staff over the last 4 months.

I wonder if Google will try to get in on that action too.

Financial details of the acquisition were not released. Withoutabox provides an online site for independent filmmakers to manage their film distribution, submission of their films to film festivals and promotion of the films themselves.

Withoutabox was co-founded in 2000 by David Straus and Joe Neulight. The company will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in the Los Angeles area.

"For eight years, Withoutabox has enabled filmmakers and festivals to reach the widest audience possible," said David Straus, CEO, Withoutabox. "Now, they will be able to connect directly with the 50 million film lovers who visit IMDb each month."
