We’re not international politics experts, so we’ll refrain from commenting on North Korean state media’s suggestions that leader Kim Jong Un and his generals are planning some sort of “U.S. mainland strike,” and whether or not this is credible or simply some sort of chest thumping designed to pump up support, domestically.

But they did release some interesting photos of Kim Jong Un seemingly making some sort of plans in a military control room.

And in those photos, we can confirm Kim Jong Un’s predilection for Apple products.

Look! An iMac!

Apple doesn’t send out holiday mailers to mailboxes all over the country. It doesn’t need to, and paper spam would seem old-fashioned for the world’s most valuable tech company. In fact, it probably doesn’t need to put together a holiday gift guide at all, though it has.

Today, Apple launched its holiday gift guide website, featuring the perfect gifts for the Apple fans. The guide is split into four parts, one section for each of Apple’s major products – iPhone, iPad, iPod, and the Mac category, which includes Macbooks, iMacs, and Apple TVs.

In addition to the Apple products themselves, Apple is selling a myriad of accessories for all Apple products. Aside from the requisite cases, headphones, adapters, and gift cards, the company has a few less-practical (but really cool) products. A few of the highlights are a USB Fender Stratocaster Guitar, an iPad edition of Monopoly, and bluetooth RC cars & flying drones.

Apple is providing free shipping for anything listed in the holiday gift guide, as well as all orders over $50. For impatient Apple fans, Apple also allows customers to purchase some of the items in the holiday gift guide and pick them up at a nearby Apple store.

There’s no sign of a Google Play Android holiday gift website yet. With its new Nexus lineup, though, Google might finally have some products around which to base a few good accessories.

Apple’s Phil Schiller showed off a new iMac today at Apple’s big event. According to him, it’s the most beautiful Mac Apple has ever made.

As you may have guessed, it’s really thin. “It’s absoultely beautiful,” he said.

Actually, its 5mm thin – 80% thinner than the previous generation.

“There’s an entire computer in here,” said Schiller. “Hard to believe there’s a display in here.”

It has edge to edge glass, and uses up to 50% less power when sitting idle.

The enclosure is made of a chin and an aluminum back, put together with advanced laser welding (friction stir welding, which involves molecules of aluminum being merged together to make on piece). The display is laminated directly to the glass. The entire display is 45% thinner. Apple has removed the optical drive and completely re-engineered optical components.

It comes in two display sizes: 27-inch (2560 X 1440) and 21.5-inch (1920 x 1080).

The new iMacs make use of Intel’s Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 processors, as well as FaceTime cameras, dual microphones, NVIDIA’s GeForce 600-era graphics, up to 32GB of RAM, and multiple storage options (hard drive or flash.

Apple revealed Fusion Drive, which includes 128 GB flash storage, 1 TB or 3TB HDD, fused together in a single volume, with faster reads and writes. “You order it and get a single drive,” said Schiller.

The whole thing, of course, comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

The 21.5 inch model starts at $1299 (2.7 GHz quad-core, i5 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 640M, 1TB HDD). It ships in November. The 27-inch model (2.9 GHz quad-core i5, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 660M, 1TB HDD) starts at $1799, and ships in December.

Time moves rather quickly when you stop to think about it. It’s hard to imagine that it’s already been one year since the passing of Steve Jobs. Even with his passing, it’s been business as usual at Apple as the company released the new iPad and iPhone 5 this year to stellar reviews and sales. Even so, Apple has taken time out to honor the life and achievements of its most famous founder.

People who visit the Apple Web site today will be greeted with a video memorial that celebrates the life of Steve Jobs. It covers all the major achievements of Jobs’ life including the launch of the iMac, the iPod, and the iPhone.

Current CEO Tim Cook also shared his personal tribute to the Apple co-founder:

Steve’s passing one year ago was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for. – Tim

Apple is celebrating the life of Steve Jobs today, but others have been looking back on his achievements for the past week. In fact, a futurist talk from Jobs that was thought to have been lost was recently uncovered and shared with the world this week. Even if it’s a little creepy, a Chinese company has also paid tribute with a wax replica of Jobs.

Others may share stories or pay tribute to Jobs today, but Apple sure has the classiest tribute of them all. I’m sure Jobs would be pleased with its simplicity and matter of fact nature. It’s already been a year since his passing, but the effect Jobs had on the tech world will be felt for quite some time.

If Apple desktop users were feeling a little left out this year, today’s good news is likely to perk them right up. Amidst the unbelievable hype for the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini, news of a new lineup of iMacs has leaked to the media.

Fox News is citing unnamed sources as saying new versions of the desktop iMac are “imminent.” The report points out that supplies of 27-inch iMacs are beginning to run short in stores such as Amazon. A sell-out of current generation Kindles was part of the confirmation of Amazon’s recent announcement of its new Kindle lineup.

Although the original Fox News report stated that the iMacs will be announced alongside the iPhone 5 at next week’s Apple event, the story has since been updated to be more vague about the timeframe. Fox pointed to a recent blog post by Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, that stated the devices will be out sometime this fall.

Now that the impending announcement is known, coverage of the devices is feeding into that favorite pastime: Apple rumor and speculation. So, what could possibly be changing in the new iMacs? Though the hardware is likely to get an upgrade, most of the current speculation is on what type of screen the iMacs will have. Fox speculates that, aside from removing the disc drive, the new iMacs will have a retina display. This is contradicted by Arment, who speculates that retina displays of iMac size can’t yet be manufactured in large enough quantities to meet Apple’s needs. Another screen rumor that wasn’t mentioned by Fox, but was whispered widely this past spring is that the new iMac might get a touch screen. Sure, Steve Jobs would never have allowed such a thing, but Apple has the patent on such a device, all the same.

When it comes to new Apple products, the fact is that we never really know anything for certain until Apple announces it. While the rumor mill is often a valuable source of information about what Apple has coming up next, it’s never perfect, and there are always a few things it gets wrong. That said, there are a few solid indicators that can, at times, tell us when Apple has something getting ready to launch. One of the most reliable of these is retailer supply. When retailers start having trouble getting their hands on one of Apple’s products, you can bet that a new version is coming sooner than later.

We saw this earlier this year with the Apple TV, and again more recently with the MacBook Pro. Now it seems to be happening with the 27-inch iMac. According to AppleInsider, retailers like Best Buy are beginning to run low on the iMac. The lack of iMac stocks means that Apple is making fewer of them, suggesting that the current model is being phased out to make room for the new hotness.

If you recall the pre-WWDC 2012 buzz, it was widely expected that Apple would announce a new retina display iMac alongside their retina display MacBook Pro. That, of course, didn’t happen, prompting speculation that it would be coming either later this year or next year. While Apple confirmed that the Mac Pro would be getting an overhaul in 2013 and that the iMac would be getting an update, they declined to say when the new iMac would be launching. A later report suggested that a new non-retina iMac would be coming later this year, while another (probably less reliable) predicted that the new iMac will, in fact, have a retina display.

The iMac is definitely in need of an update. The current model has been left untouched by Apple for over a year. While the inclusion of a retina display in the update is still up in the air, it seems clear that those wanting a refresh of Apple’s popular all-in-one computer are about to get their wish.

You may recall that prior to Apple’s WWDC 2012 keynote last month there were rumors that they would unveil a retina display iMac. That, of course, didn’t happen. In fact, Apple didn’t announce any updates to the iMac at all. Later reports, though, suggested that the retina display iMac might be coming later this year, or perhaps next year. Finally, we learned last week that yes, Apple is preparing a new iMac for later this year, but that no, it will not have a retina display.

Well, hold onto your hats, because now we’re getting completely different information. According to a report today from DigiTimes, Apple’s supply chain is gearing up to start producing the new iMac for a possible October launch. According to this latest report it seems that yes, Virginia, there is a retina display on the new iMac models.

Now, it’s worth emphasizing that this report comes from DigiTimes. The fact is, DigiTimes has a record for accuracy that’s roughly on par with a stopped clock, give or take. On the other hand, last week’s report claiming that the new iMacs won’t have retina displays came from Instapaper creator Marco Arment, who said that “multiple sources” had told him that the iMac wouldn’t have a retina display. While it’s possible that Arment’s sources are wrong and DigiTimes’s sources are right, you won’t catch me betting on those odds.

When Apple gave their WWDC 2012 keynote two weeks ago, they talked about all sorts of new products – updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, a retina display MacBook Pro, iOS 6, and OS X Mountain Lion. Most of what they talked about was what we had expected. There were a few things, however, that Apple didn’t announce. One of those was a retina display update for the iMac. Several reports prior to WWDC suggested that the iMac would be getting a retina display, but Apple remained quiet about the topic.

Within a week, they had confirmed that we would be seeing major updates to the iMac and the Mac Pro. Yet there was no mention of a retina display. Now it looks like there may be a reason for that: it seems that the retina display won’t be making the jump to the iMac for quite some time yet. Though there does appear to be a significant iMac upgrade on tap for 2012, the retina display won’t be coming until sometime in 2013 (possibly at WWDC).

According to Marco Arment, developer of Instapaper, new iMacs will be coming in the fall, but without the retina display. Arment posted to his blog on Friday about the features he was expecting to see in the new iMacs. He suggested that only one retina display MacBook was announced at WWDC because the retina display technology is still too expensive to roll out across the board, especially considering that many of Apple’s MacBook customers are students. The iMac, meanwhile, is more of a family computer, which means a fall release (i.e., just in time for the holiday shopping season) makes more sense.

In response to that post, Arment was contacted by “multiple sources” who confirmed that an updated iMac will be released in the fall, but that it will not have a retina display. Though these sources apparently didn’t say that a retina display iMac would be coming in 2013, it seems likely. As Arment points out, Apple is betting heavily on retina display technology. They’ve added it to their two main iOS devices – the iPhone and the iPad – and begun bringing it to the MacBook lines as well. As the cost of retina display tech drops over the next few years, you can bet that we’ll be seeing retina displays on every Mac with an integrated display. In fact, it’s a fair bet that we’ll eventually see a retina display iPod Touch, retina versions of Apple’s Cinema Displays, and maybe even retina displays on smaller devices like the iPod Nano.

Unfortunately, a total rollout of retina displays across Apple’s whole lineup is likely to take several years. Which means that if you’re holding your breath for a retina display iMac, you’re going to have quite awhile to wait.
