About the Author

Years ago I found myself on unemployment and in debt but with many service oriented websites. Determined never to work for "the man" again over the next several years I learned how to monetize those websites through donation, subscription, direct sales, contextual advertising and affiliate advertising. People say that I have a knack for seeing marketing angles that most people do not. I work hard, party hard, and have a relentless work ethic when something catches my interest.

It looks like Firefox plans to capitalize in its recent surge in popularity by airing fan-based television commercials, according to Read/WriteWeb.

The ads will initially appear only to viewers in the San Francisco and Boston area, but will likely expand to other areas over time. Each ad will focus on the theme that Firefox is “the safest, fastest and most enjoyable way to experience the Web,” and will be sponsored by users and fans of the browser – (each contributing upwards of $10 of their own cash to help pay for the ads).

So, who does Firefox hope to target with the TV ads?

they’re going after prime time cable channels like Comedy Central, ESPN, TNT, History Channel, USA, and MTV. In terms of demographics, they’re targeting people who they think are willing to download and try Firefox.

This could just work. Everytime I see one of those Apple/PC TV ads, I ask myself why I still use a PC, when Macs look so darn cool – I want to be a cool kid too! Maybe Firefox should look at ways to highlight how much better their browser is compared to IE. By the looks of the complaints IE7 is getting, they shouldn’t have a difficult time convincing people to switch.

When you search US-Google for IE7 (or Internet Explorer, IE, Internet Explorer 7*) you may see a Google-sponsored advertisement for “Free IE7 Download” on top, the snippet reading “Google recommends upgrading to the new, safer Internet Explorer 7″.

Clicking on it brings you to a special Google page with a download of Internet Explorer 7 that has a couple of add-ons, including the Google Toolbar, and Google search set as the default search in the browser.

Nothing fishy going on here, but I think someone at Google management is very concerned people might download a Microsoft product that doesn’t have any Google in it! And I bet Google is getting nice click-thru rates too, considering they’re about the only ones allowed to use the word “Google” in their AdWords ads… perhaps increasing the likelihood searchers overlook the “sponsored link” disclaimer, thinking it’s an official search results recommendation.

*The AdWords traffic estimator predicts a daily search budget of $400 – $760.

Earlier today, an advertisement for Firefox appeared on Google’s homepage. While that isn’t really too remarkable, the ad featured an “optimized for Google” tagline, which is interesting. To complicate matters, an ad for an “optimized for Google” version of IE7 has appeared among certain Google search results, as well.

News of the Firefox development appeared on the Google Operating System blog. “This time Google is more pushy,” wrote Ionut Alex. Chitu – the banner ad appeared to users who were browsing with IE. “Google wants to convert Internet Explorer users to Firefox, but also targets Firefox users that don’t have Firefox 2.0.”

That reasoning works in light of Google’s traditional inclination towards Firefox, but the IE7 promotion confuses matters.

Philipp Lenssen documented the appearance of the IE7 ad. “When you search US-Google for IE7 . . . you may see a Google-sponsored advertisement for ‘Free IE7 Download’ on top, the snippet reading ‘Google recommends upgrading to the new, safer Internet Explorer 7.’”

Lenssen wasn’t too concerned about the unusual ad, however. “Nothing fishy going on here,” he wrote, “but I think someone at Google management is very concerned people might download a Microsoft product that doesn’t have any Google in it!”

It’s also worth noting that Google has now “caught up” with Yahoo, which has offered its own optimized version of IE7 for a while. Of course, as the Cybernet site documented, “What’s pretty funny is that . . . the Google and Yahoo IE pages . . . are obviously some sort of generic presentation that Microsoft gives to these distributors . . . . That goes to show how much effort the two companies really put into promoting their own ‘specialized’ versions of Internet Explorer 7.”

Still, it’s interesting to see Google promoting the Microsoft product in addition to its longtime pal Firefox. Perhaps the time for playing favorites is over.

UPDATE: Well, it seems as if Google might have been copycatting Yahoo in more than one way. A reader contacted WebProNews to say, “So you know, Yahoo! designed its original IE7 landing page, it’s not based on a template from Microsoft. If you look closely at the Google landing page, you’ll notice that it includes the same graphic of the Yahoo! toolbar, with the red Y! blurred out.” The reader was also kind enough to link to a post by Jeremy Zawodny that documented the situation.

—

Stuart Mudie and Derek Torres are co-authors of The Unofficial Guide to Windows Vista, a warts-and-all look at the new Microsoft operating system, that is due to be published by Wiley early next year.

I’ve worked with Stuart in the past, we’ve known each other through our blogs for quite some time, and we’ve met up in Paris. So when he announced that the two of them were planning a “virtual blog tour” to promote their book, I was happy to volunteer as a host.

Over to Stuart

I did a Google search the other day for “IE7 sucks” and received around 14,000 results – not bad for a product that’s little more than a month old. (By way of comparison, “Firefox 2.0 sucks” returned just over a hundred results.)

But is IE7 really that bad?

While there are certainly things to complain about, when you look at the bigger picture, I think Microsoft is to be applauded for the important improvements it has made to the latest version of its browser. We have a right to demand perfection, but we shouldn’t really be surprised when we don’t get it. You recently put it quite well yourself, Neville, when you asked: “Are all browsers just betas?”

So, what is there to like about IE7?

Tabbed browsing may well be a sign that Microsoft is playing catch-up with Firefox (just like much in the new version of Windows Media Player is playing catch-up with iTunes), but that doesn’t make it any less welcome.

Tight integration of RSS is a step towards mainstream use of content syndication formats, which is a good thing.

Like in Windows Vista as a whole, security is much more to the fore in IE7. Protected Mode (Vista only), the Phishing filter and numerous HTTPS enhancements are all examples of how the Microsoft philosophy now seems to be “secure by default”, rather than putting the onus on the user to make the “right” security decision.

IE7′s improved CSS, DOM and HTML support, while it may not be the full standards compliance many have been demanding, does at least sort out some of the biggest bugs. In the short term, this may create problems with sites that make extensive use of hacks to get around shortcomings in previous versions of Internet Explorer, but that’s something for the developers of those sites to sort out, not a problem with IE7 itself. Don’t criticise Microsoft for starting to do things right.

In summary, IE7 is far from perfect, but it is the first decent browser from Microsoft in a long time and we should recognise it as such. They’re on the right track at last.

Internet Explorer 7 comes with build in web search from the toolbar, just like Firefox have had for years now.

The cool thing about it is that you can offer your visitors to add your blog search to the different providers like MSN Search and Google. That’s because IE7 supports the OpenSearch format, which is a simple XML file that you can link to from within the
of your webpages. All you need is a website with an internal search engine just like the one on this blog.

To make it work you have to create an XML file in the correct OpenSearch format and upload it to your web server. Use this simple online tool for generating a correct XML file. Then add this line to the
of your webpages:

<link title="Title of blog" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" rel="search" href="http://www.domain.com/provider.xml">

That’s it! Now, every time a visitor comes by using IE7 the search button lights up in an orange color indicating that your site has a compatible search provider. The visitor can then use it right away by choosing it on the dropdown list, or add it permanently to the list of search providers to use whenever and not just when visiting your blog.

Here is my OpenSearch XML file. Notice that it contains the Unicode character . in order to make it validate the dot in .NET slave.

I don’t know if it is going to be used by a great number of people, we’ll probably have to wait for the final release of IE7 to find out. In the meantime, I find no reason why not to implement this simple little feature with such great potential.

Tony Ruscoe, so far an Internet Explorer user, upgraded to IE7 and wrote a review. Firefox is winning 4 to 0, thanks to issues like these:

I’ve only tried using [IE7] for a couple of hours now and there are some quite things that are already annoying me. The first and most obvious change that’s causing a problem is the interface. I’ve read numerous other reports about how bad everyone thinks this is too – so how the heck did it ever get passed usability testing? Microsoft, please don’t make me think.

Tony’s still undecided whether or not to finally switch to Firefox, but his conclusion is very telling:

Ever since around 1999, my default browser has always been Internet Explorer. And before that, I think it was Netscape 4. I guess I just never got around to switching to Firefox. I didn’t really have a good reason to do so either. However, with IE7 being so different to IE6, I’m now being forced to make a change.

Did all good Microsoft developers leave to Google, or why does MS abandon product usability in so many instances (their Windows Media Player is another case)… and risk becoming their own worst enemy in the browser wars?

You may or may not have heard that new releases are here or about to be here for Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Sometime in the middle of last week IE7 lost it’s beta status and was pronounced ready for the masses. On the heels of the IE release Firefox 2.0 is due any day. I’m not planning on reviewing either since chances are we’ll all be upgrading at some point, but I do want to talk about what the new versions of each browser will likely mean for web developers and SEOs.

What Firefox 2.0 Means For Developers And SEOs

As you probably know Firefox is my primary browser and it’s my choice for both a development platform as well as for general browsing. I wouldn’t imagine many changes with the new 2.0 version that will affect the way we develop sites. Even though the new Firefox will sport a major release version number the truth is 1.5 was the last major upgrade and while 2.0 will include new features it should remain largely unchanged on the surface.

The biggest changes I’ve heard about will be a spell checker in the browser which is welcome news. My spelling is fine, but my typing is about as bad as can be. There will be other features such as improved tabbed browsing and a session restore if the browser crashes, but these are likely to be integration of some popular extensions. The issue with memory leaks is supposed be improved as well.

My best guess though, is it will be business as usual as far as Firefox is concerned. Sites you developed that work in Firefox 1.5 will likely work and look exactly the same with Firefox 2.0. You might find some of your extensions won’t work for a few days and some that may never work again if their developers have abandoned maintaining them.

What IE7 Means For Devlopers And SEOs

The changes with Internet Explorer will be quite a bit more. As far as browsing is concerned there should be a lot that is different when compared with IE6. Features like tabbed browsing will be making their first appearance in IE7. I just downloaded and installed IE7 to take a look and my first impressions were it looked good. First impressions can be deceiving though.

After about 10 minutes Of use I can’t seem to get IE to avoid crashing. That’s going to get annoying very fast. In fact it already has. But again this isn’t meant to be a review.

For awhile as developers we could almost safely develop for version 6 of Internet Explorer and the latest Firefox release and with a few minor tweaks for Safari and Opera we could call it a day. While Microsoft will be installing IE7 as part of the next automatic upgrade we all have to accept that for the next few years it’s likely we’ll need to develop and check our sites in both version 6 and 7. Unfortunately things we may need to do to get a site working in one version might possibly break the site in the other version. Some of the hacks we’ve come to love for IE6 may not work in IE7. I have a feeling conditional comments will become more in vogue since it will allow us to direct different css towards different IE versions.

I’ve been checking a few sites I’ve developed that use a few minor hacks for IE6 and they seem to be working so far, which is a good sign I think. I’d check more, but IE seems to be crashing quite often. As soon as I open a dialog at least. But again this isn’t meant to be a review.

For the SEOs among us there are two features sure to affect our lives. One is the new integrated search box. The default is supposed to be set to Live Search. And if you remember over the summer Google complained some about this fact. Their claim being that it was too difficult for the average user to switch to another default. I’m not sure what Google was complaining about in all honestly. For me Google was the only search engine installed by default, probably because it was somewhere set as my default search engine in either Firefox of in my previous version of Internet Explorer. It’s also trivial to add new engines and change to another default.

Assuming that for most people Live Search is set as the default it’s likely that Live Search will gain market share as most people won’t change the default search regardless of how easy it is to make the change. As SEOs we might want to pay more attention to the third search engine, which fortunately enough is the easiest to manipulate. Spammers unite I guess. If you were thinking at all of becoming a black hat, now might be the perfect time. Get in there before people figure out how to change the default search engine to Google and before Microsoft upgrades their algorithm.

The other major feature is the addition of an RSS button on the what is now called the command bar. I think it’s called the command bar, but I’ll need to restart after the latest IE crash to check again on the name. Whatever it’s called the RSS button is a nice feature. Its grayed out until you’re on a page with a feed and then it turns the usual orange color. It’s going to bring RSS into the mainstream in ways it isn’t now. With more people realizing they can subscribe to your blog it will become an even more important marketing tool.

While I’ve mentioned IE crashes a few times here in all fairness I did try to run multiple versions of IE at the same time earlier. I found a hack for Windows a few months back to allow multiple versions of IE running at the same time and it’s probably due to the concurrent versions running that I’m seeing the crashes. I’m hopeful that a restart of my laptop will fix the issue. The problem for me as a developer is that as I mentioned we’ll be needing to check sites in versions 6 and 7 of IE for a few years likely. And as I prefer to work on one machine the ability to run both is something I would really like. If I can’t I can’t though, and I’ll find a way to live with it.

Once again this post hasn’t been meant to be a review. IE7 will most likely prove to be a pretty good browser, my own problems with it tonight notwithstanding. Firefox will continue to be the quality browser it’s been. Most of us won’t be changing from one to the other, but we all will be upgrading. What I think most important in regards to the Internet Explorer upgrade is that as developers we might need to learn a few things. We’ll need to unlearn a few hacks while perhaps still keeping them in out bag of tricks. Conditional comments may find their way into use more and they are actually a very good way to deal with bugs in IE.

For those of us who are search engine optimizers we may want to learn a little more about how MSN Live Search works since it’s likely to see an increase in market share. Given the ease of manipulation this could mean a step back for the seo community as emphasis is again placed on formula seo. My guess is even with Live Search as the default search engine, the majority will still be typing google.com in their address bar or going to it in their favorites as they always have. But I do also expect Microsoft to gain quite a few users with the latest edition of Internet Explorer. RSS, especially in the form of blogs are going to become even more important marketing tools.

Get ready for both upgrades and hopefully after a restart I’ll have IE7 working again. Wish me luck.

Chris Messina, who used to work on Flock (an open source browser based on the same code that runs Firefox), says the beast has woken up. Beast being Microsoft.

But IE7 does have some challenges ahead of it. Some sites in it render very slow. Most notably for me, Google Reader (that’s now my most used Web site because I’m reading all my feeds there and building my link blog with it). I’m also using the new Firefox 2 and Firefox is a LOT faster. IE7 is frustratingly slow on Google Reader. It seems to hang whenever new stuff is being downloaded in the background via AJAX. To be fair, Google is probably pushing the browser in all sorts of ways, even the MSN team decided to back off on its use of AJAX due to speed problems, though (Live.com used to have an infinite scroll capability, which I really loved but they got rid of it after speed complaints came in).

I haven’t yet visited enough sites with both browsers to know whether this is a single site problem, or an experience that I’ll have overall, but Firefox 2 does seem faster.

UPDATE: I just went to Google Maps with both browsers too. Same results. Firefox 2 is a LOT faster on AJAX (dragging the map around feels a lot better on Firefox 2).

On Local.live.com, though, both browsers behaved almost exactly the same (both were fast).

I wonder what the difference in AJAX calls are between the two mapping sites. That might demonstrate that Web 2 sites might need to do some homework to get their sites to be performant in both IE7 and Firefox.

By the way, I just did a little “start up test” of both browsers. I set both browsers home page to TechMeme. Then I started both up. Then I closed both. Then I started them both up again. Both times Firefox noticeably beat IE7 on completing the page load.

So, my #1 wish for IE8 is already “more speed please.”

What have your experiences been?

So what do businesses have to look forward to with the new release of Microsoft Internet Explorer?

more compatibility testing than signing up for an E-Harmony membership.

Let’s face it; new software translates to new problems, and IE7 is no exception. In their blog, the development team claims, “Compatibility with sites, extensions and applications has been a very high priority for us.” In the end, however, it appears that Microsoft is more concerned with the adaptation of the existing client base to their particular product ideal, rather than gearing said product to meet the needs of the current market.

So with that being said, let’s take a look at what the good folks over at the IE7 development team recommend for your business to prepare for launch:

- Download, install and test your products with IE7 RC 1 -This is the fastest and best way to test for compatibility issues.

- Download the IE7 Readiness Toolkit – This toolkit pulls together a number of important resources to help you prepare for IE7:
* Developer and IT Pro readiness check lists,
* Detailed documentation on important changes in IE7,
* Testing and debugging guidance,
* Tools for testing, debugging and investigating issues,
* And more

- Download and use the Application Compatibility Toolkit - Helps test browser-based applications to ensure they work with IE7.

- Visit the Microsoft Internet Explorer Developer Center – You will find an array of important information for developers.

- Use the Information Index for Internet Explorer 7 – Think of this as a table of contents linking you to documentation, blog posts, whitepapers and other information on IE7.

- Read the IE Team Blog – Use the search feature on the right to find previous posts on almost any topic you can think of with regard to IE7.

I had less to do to prepare for my college entrance exams.

But wait, that’s not all! I forgot the gem of a read that comprises the release notes. Take a moment (or thirty) and see what you have to look forward to in this exciting new release of Microsoft Internet Explorer! (Embrace the sarcasm.)

Does it seem strange that there is more effort devoted to installation errors and unsupported toolbars than to new features and content? For a moment I couldn’t distinguish whether I was reading the release notes or answers to frequently asked troubleshooting questions.

Thanks Microsoft, but I’ll hold out for the new Firefox.
