eCommerce has come a long way over the years. You can buy or sell just about anything online.

You can buy DVDs, cars, digital music, real estate, and brides. You can sell televisions, cosmetics, hand-made crafts, and even your skin as ad-space. You can apparently even sell your entire life – in a manner of speaking anyway.

A 44-year-old man by the name of Ian Usher recently put his up on the auction block via eBay (the only way to go to unload your history).

Well, he technically still gets to keep his life. Nobody has paid to murder him. We’re not quite talking Hostel, but the winning bidder has basically purchased his identity. They get his home, his job, and all of his belongings. They even get his friends (it is unclear if these friends have consented to this), all at the low, low price of about $96,000.

Ouch! Forty-four years and his life has not even amounted to a hundred grand. Sounds like the makings for a good candy bar commercial.

With all due respect(?), Usher is not the first person to sell his life on the Internet. According to Reuters, "American John Freyer started All My Life For Sale (www.allmylifeforsale.com) in 2001 and sold everything he owned on eBay, later visiting the people who bought his things."

The "fortune" of Usher’s life includes a motorcycle and a jetski. After these things and the home, the life’s looking pretty cheap (it doesn’t speak volumes about the quality of the friendships either). Maybe selling it was a good move.

An Australian man who decided to auction his life on eBay after his marriage ended saw bids that reached $2.1 million in the first day of the sale.

Ian Usher, 44, said in March he was auctioning his life on eBay, that included his $420,000 three-bedroom home in Perth, along with his job at a rug store, his car, motorcycle, clothes and his friends.

Usher said he wanted to make $500,000 to start his new life but on the first day of the 7-day auction Usher knew the $2.1 million bid for his life was suspect. Usher explained on his Web site that an error had occurred that allowed non-registered users to bid on his life.

On his Web site Usher writes," Eventually, as I worked backwards through the bids, I discovered that the highest bid from a genuinely registered bidder was down at $155,000, and I decided to delete all bids above that. I may have deleted some genuine ones, but if they want to place their bids again, they will be welcome to when they register."

A spokeswoman for eBay, Sian Kennedy, said Usher was required to verify all the bidders before the auction to make sure they were real buyers and he could delete any he thought were bogus.

His life is under the real estate section on eBay because his house is the largest asset in the sale.

"The real estate category on eBay is a non-binding section because of the real estate laws in Australia. You need a special license to sell real estate," Kennedy told Reuters.

"You need to get in contact with him and he has to verify you are a genuine bidder before you can bid. If he doesn’t think you are genuine he can remove your bid."

An Australian man whose marriage ended after six years is hoping for a fresh start by putting his life up for auction online.

Ian Usher Life Auction
(Photo Credit: A Life 4 Sale)

Ian Usher, 44, is auctioning his three-bedroom house in Perth, his car and job on his Web site www.alife4sale.com, along with a link to eBay after his marriage to wife Laura ended last year.

"I am selling everything lock, stock and barrel, from the contents of my wardrobe to my kettle, and from my cutlery to my car," Usher told The Northern Echo, a local newspaper near his former home in northeast England.

"My aim is to walk away at the end of the eBay auction with my wallet in one pocket and my passport in the other, go to the airport and just jump on the first available plane to anywhere."

Bids will begin at only $1, but Usher hopes to bring in around $500,000 from the sale of his "life package."

Usher is also selling his motorcycle, jet-ski, surfboards, sky-diving equipment, spa and his big screen TV. "My tale is a bit of a sad one, but I am not trying to sell anyone a sob story," he said.

"This is just my way of dealing with what has happened to me."

Usher’s employer at a Perth rug store, Jenny Jones, will give whoever buys his "life" a two-week trial at the store with a chance for a permanet job.

The auction starts on June 22 and will last one week.
