It looks like Microsoft is now starting to implement its adCenter Labs Video HyperLink Technology with real world clients. The first signs of this come this week as MSN Entertainment shows of Kohl’s department store using the Video HyperLink Technology, which is an interactive video tool which provides more information about objects in a video when you click or even hover on them.

For example, you might want details about a product you see in the video. So as the video plays, you can move the mouse over the product to see where more information is available. Then, you can click the summary information to go to a merchandize website for details.

Google might be the next target in the legal fight, and hopefully their lawyers are more up to the task than those representing webmaster Stephen Cooper. In Australia, the site Cooper operated similar to a search engine for finding music failed to satisfy the Federal Court that its practices did not infringe music industry copyrights.

Hyperlinks were central to Cooper’s appeal of an earlier decision that found him guilty of infringement. He argued on two grounds – that providing a website and links to content did not constitute authorization to infringe copyright, and neither did those links authorize copying the linked works.

Subsequently the court’s judgment hinged on the interpretation of authorization. Though precedent cited by Cooper stated that ‘a person does not authorize an infringement merely because he or she knows that another person might infringe the copyright and takes no step to prevent the infringement.’

However, the court found Cooper did not do enough to stay within the penumbra of that precedent. The bench likewise did not consider Cooper’s comparison of his site to Google an accurate one:

If Google’s linking is untested, it won’t be for long. We think it will be sooner rather than later when the search advertising giant finds someone willing to go after it in what looks like a fair-use hostile Australian court system.

The law, which also imposes stricter penalties and limitations on sex offenders, imposes jail time and fines on those who try to trick minors into viewing sexual content via misspelled domain names, search, and misleading hyperlinks. Links to such content will need to be clearly labeled as to the nature of it.

From the government press release, measures include:

- More consistent availability to the public through the Internet of information concerning the identities and locations of sex offenders who are required to register.

- Prohibiting the insidious practice engaged in by certain sexually explicit web sites of hiding innocuous terms in the hypertext markup language so that a search for those terms on the Internet yields links to the sexually explicit web sites.

The language of section 2252B of the bill, entitled “Misleading domain names on the Internet”:

(a) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a person into viewing material constituting obscenity shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.

(b) Whoever knowingly uses a misleading domain name on the Internet with the intent to deceive a minor into viewing material that is harmful to minors on the Internet shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 4 years, or both.

(c) For the purposes of this section, a domain name that includes a word or words to indicate the sexual content of the site, such as “sex” or “porn”, is not misleading.

(d) For the purposes of this section, the term “material that is harmful to minors” means any communication, consisting of nudity, sex, or excretion, that, taken as a whole and with reference to its context-

(1) predominantly appeals to a prurient interest of minors;

(2) is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community as a whole with respect to what is suitable material for minors; and

(3) lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.

(e) For the purposes of subsection (d), the term “sex” means acts of masturbation, sexual intercourse, or physcial [1] contact with a person’s genitals, or the condition of human male or female genitals when in a state of sexual stimulation or arousal.

“America’s children will be better protected from every parent’s worst nightmare — sexual predators — thanks to passage of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. I applaud both the House and Senate — and in particular the leadership of Chairman Specter in the Senate and Chairman Sensenbrenner in the House — for passing this comprehensive bill, which includes provisions proposed by the Department of Justice,” said US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

“The protection of our Nation’s children has been, and will continue to be, one of the Department’s highest priorities, and we believe this bill will help us do our job even better.”

The law is already receiving criticism from those who feel it is a violation of free speech. Blogger “Shii” fears the language of the law prohibits even “prank links.”

“So, what does this bill outlaw? You can’t put prank links to Goatse anymore, because they decieve people into viewing obscenity. More importantly, you can’t link to erotic art on a website that minors might read without explicitly explaining its erotic nature. So, if I were to link to, say, the anime image database Danbooru, that would be totally illegal because I didn’t tell you what sort of pictures you might find there.”

What’s Goatse? It’s um, erm, uhYou really don’t want to know.

But what do you do if you wanted to link to a specific spot on the same page? And in what cases would you want to?

I’ll answer the latter first, because when I tell you how to do it, it will make more sense if you knew under what circumstances you might want to use this feature.

Why would you want to link to an area on the same page (called an anchor tag)? If you want to link to a specific location going from mypage.html to anotherpage.html. Rather than send your visitors to the top of anotherpage.html, you can be specific as to exactly where you want their browser to direct them on the page where you send them.

If your pages are long, you can break up the long-scroll problem by using the anchor tag. Place your section names at the top hyperlinked to the anchors you placed within specific areas in your source code. This helps your visitors get to the areas of a l-o-n-g page quickly.

When you want to link to a specific area on a page, you need to do two things.

State the exact location of the specific area in your HTML source code and name it. We named this location “gohere”, but you can name it whatever you like that makes sense to you:

Then hyperlink to the area you called “gohere” by using the code below. Note that we used a # tag before the name of the specific location. This # character is called an anchor. This takes the place of a standard page name as shown in the absolute and relative path examples at the beginning of this article when link to a location on the same page.

What if you want to link to a specific area on a different page? That’s easy. Combine the two techniques. Your hyperlink code will look like this:
