Matt Cutts posted a video today for Halloween. It’s not a webmaster help video though. It’s a video showing his Halloween costume.

He says this is the product of him asking people on Google+ what he should be. He’s dressed as the stick man from xkcd:

He also does a little singing and dancing.

“A couple quick things: 1) I know the video is cheesy and lo-fi, but that’s what I was going for,” says Cutts on his personal blog. “2) With a little more time and more work on the video (e.g. better lighting, turning off automatic brightness on the video camera, a little more time spent on the greenscreen key) I think it could have been pretty great. But sometimes you run out of time, and October was a busy month.”

In other non-SEO Matt Cutts news, he is also participating in Movember:

Cutts, along with Bing’s Duane Forrester will grow moustaches for the cause.

Today is Halloween. A day full of costumed adolescents and all the candy you can eat, with out your child knowing you stole it from them of course. Sure the candy is the highlight of the holiday, but another big part is the tradition of carving a macabre face into a jack-o-lantern.

If you enjoy pumpkin carving, you’ll be sure to get a kick out of todays Google Doodle, as they team from Mountain View have really gone all out this year. Sure, Halloween is one of the Doodles that Google does every year. Usually they just do an illustration of some sort, but this year they’ve put together a stop motion logo which features six pumpkins being carved over the course of eight hours. Below you can see the Google Doodle for yourself with some details of how the thing came together.

“To celebrate Halloween this year, the doodle team wanted to capture that fascinating transformation that takes place when carving a pumpkin. Instead of picking up a few pumpkins from the grocery store, however, we decided to work on six giant pumpkins, specially delivered from nearby Half Moon Bay (some weighing well over 1,000 pounds). What you see is a timelapse video of the approximately eight hours we spent carving in the middle of our Mountain View, Calif. campus.”

If you’re interested in seeing some behind the scenes of Google’s huge Doodle undertaking, you can see a video below of how the Halloween doodle came to fruition.

All Hallow’s Eve is quickly upon us, and the denizens of the web are quickly gearing up for their annual dress-up games, evoking memories of video games, movies, memes, and, well, sluts. I’ll deal with the “slut” aspect later on in this post, but before that, there have been some awesome Halloween-related posts popping up all over the web, and thanks in large part to Reddit.com and Imgur.com, they’ve been assembled in a couple of places for you to enjoy.

First off, this post is going to address the some of the more unique costumes I’ve come across during this search. Sorry, but the scantily-clad costumes won’t be appearing in this section, but they are coming up, or, at least a comment or two about them. This first stop is simply called “Fantasy Football,” and it’s a creative way to get your Halloween on:

This next one is apparently what happens when Angelina Jolie adopts you:

Next up is something that belongs in the “Father of the Year” category:

That’s just incredible. Ever wonder what a bottle of hot sauce might look like as a Halloween costume? Wonder no more:

It should be noted I’m working hard to limit the costumes I’m including because there are just so many of them out there. You could literally spend all day looking at them. With that in mind, here are a few more:

Courtesy. There’s this gem what was lovingly called “the worst zombie costume ever.” Come for the bad costume and stay for the incredible comment underneath it:

Next up is an exercise in incredible use of special effects makeup for Halloween purposes. It’s a tad disturbing, but it’s still awesome as hell:

It’s also important to remember your history, especially in regards to Halloween costumes. If you’re a child of the 70s, you’ll remember these gems quite well:

As for the slut aspect of Halloween dress-up, if you dress like this:

I’ll enjoy it, but these other two pieces of web content were made just for you:

And the incredible Jenna Marbles, who’s actually defending your choice to dress slutty. Keep in mind, the language is NSWF:

Now for some kick-ass pumpkins, all courtesy of Imgur:

And then there’s this incredible creation, the Flamethrowing Jack-O’-Lantern:

There’s video of it in action, too:

Here’s the tutorial for those of you who are interested, but I doubt, however, the neighborhood parents would appreciate the creativity. Also, a word of warning to those of you who are thinking of making an awesome pumpkin:

Sounds about right.

In other news, if you’re interested in making a Google Places Jack-O’-Lantern, there’s a pattern for that. Oh, and for those of you who are thinking of scaring the crap out of your trick-or-treaters, keep this little public service announcement/rage comic in mind:

And with that, all of us at WebProNews wish you a safe and Happy Halloween.

If you’ve ever dropped a pumpkin from a significant height and watched it explode into chunky, orange bits of pulpy goodness, you know that there’s something inherently fascinating about it. Really, it’s fun to smash any kind of squash or melon, but there’s something extra special about pumpkins.

Maybe it’s because we carve faces into them.

Anthropomorphism implications aside, exploding pumpkins are awesome. So one would infer that exploding pumpkins in slow-motion would be even more awesome, and they would be right.

This video, created by YouTube user devinsupertramp and scored by his friend Stephen Anderson, is all kinds of creepy. It’s perfect for the Halloween season. Check it out below:

Here’s how they achieved the effect:

We shot the pumpkins smashing with the Red Epic camera at 300 frames per second. Then in a couple of the shots I put the slow motion clips into Twixtor, a program that adds frames to make it even slow, and I made those shots run at 1000fps, by adding frames in between the other frames.

As far as the lighting goes, we used an Arri kit. We filmed the smashing of the pumpkins right outside my friends apartment. We dropped them off the three story building into the parking lot. To make the space look like it was in the middle of nowhere, we also drapped a black cloth/sheet. And we also covered the ground with water, and the pumpkins so they would shine/glisten in the lights that we had set up.

Neat, huh?

I started thinking about other odd uses of pumpkins, so here are some other great pumpkin-related videos:

First, this is a fun, grotesque use of science -

Pumpkin catapult, anyone? –

This pumpkin cannon destroys everything in its path –

And finally, the smashing pumpkin video to rule them all –

Today, Google announced a set of new features for Google+, including apps integration, a “What’s Hot” trend finder, and Ripples, a way to visualize how your posts flow through the Google+ graph.

They also launched the Creative Kit, a simple set of photo editing tools that builds upon the basic tools already available in Google+. With the creative kit, you can run your photos through filters, add stickers and items, or even add text. On first glance, it looks a lot like Picnik, an online photo-editing service that was acquired by Google in 2010.

As part of their rollout of these new creative functions for photos, Google wants you to get in the Halloween spirit on Google+. They have added Halloween-themed photo effects to the Creative Kit for a limited time only, and they have also announced a competition to go along with these effects.

Through the end of October, simply add some spook to your photos, and share them publicly on Google+ with the hashtag #gplushalloween. We’ll assemble a surprise panel of celebrities, and next Thursday, Nov 3, they’ll announce their favorites. In the meantime, you can see early submissions from community members below. After all: we take our fun very seriously.

So far, Google has offered up this collage of celebrities who have taken the #gplushalloween challenge:

I’m sure you recognize celebs like Britney Spears, Snoop Doog, Tyra Banks and Rose McGowan. A quick hashtag search for #gplushalloween gives you a nice stream of people halloween-o-fying their photos for the contest.

Here’s a masterpiece, of fellow WebProNews writer Chris Crum:

Wanna learn more about the new Creative Kit for Google+ photos? Watch this video. and be sure to get in on all the #gplushalloween fun.

Pumpkin carving has been given new life by the Internet, and if you don’t believe me, just check out the various submissions on Reddit and other link-friendly sites. Like most interesting images, such pictures make for great web content. However, what happens when you introduce almost 4000 pounds of pumpkin into the equation and an awesome food sculptor?

Perhaps the most awesome pumpkin carving I’ve ever seen.

As you can see from the lead image, the result of Ray Villafane’s pumpkin carving is just an incredible scene that makes use of one of the Internet’s favorite horror subjects. According to reports, Villafane used two massive pumpkins to complete his carving. For the zombies, a 1693 pound pumpkin was used, and the sculptures from that huge gourd were transferred over to an even bigger pumpkin — 1818 pounds — which served as the base.

The carving was done for at the New York Botanical Garden, and the associated blog post has a 13-image slideshow of the creative process involved in such awesomeness. Here’s another example:

There’s also a time-lapse video of Villafane’s work in progress, which is just another example of the awesome web content such creations produce:

Successful web content comes in many forms, and if you have an event and/or, are attending one and it has something you might be able to make compelling content out of, in today’s world, it’s imperative that you capitalize. Just look at the amount of publicity Villafane’s creation received.

Boing Boing, Laughing Squid and Neatorama have all thrown links at the carving, and “zombie pumpkin” has a lot more coverage at Google News.

Of course, finding such worthy content is the real trick, isn’t it?
