Facebook’s good, but not that good according to ByteLevel.com’s recent findings. Google passed the social networking giant this year to take the top spot as best global website of 2012. The “Web Globalization Report Card” as the report refers to it, is a report done annually to point out the top global websites of the year.

According to ByteLevel, the “report card” analyzes each website based on the following criteria: Global reach, global navigation, global/mobile architecture and localization/sociality. Apparently Google fit those criteria just a little bit better than Facebook.

When asked “what is the value of comparing companies across different industries”, they say:

By keeping a broad focus on all major industries, we are able to point executives to those companies and industries that are doing the best job of presenting themselves to the world. Every company included does have peers by which it can be evaluated. In the end, our goal is to provide a truly global perspective on which companies and industries are the most active and successful in web globalization. Only through casting a wide net do we achieve this goal.

Some other companies involved in the report include: Adidas, Amazon, Disney, BMW, Sony, Starbucks, Pepsi, Visa and several more as well.

Some notable rankings include: Nikon in 13th place, Microsoft takes 19th place and Yahoo! comes in 24th.

Last week, the world experienced a once-in-a-century numerical phenomenon where every basic unit thart we use to measure time read eleven – 11th second of the 11th minute of the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year of the century.

11/11/11 meant different things for different people. Some linked the numerically significant day to doomsday prophecies – while some simply associated it with the (biblically) evil connotation of the number 11. Others saw the numbers as a sign of good fortune, as places like Las Vegas saw a massive hike in weddings scheduled at their many chapels.

I’m sure that many teenage girls made sure to make their most serious wish when all the elevens lined up.

For me, it was just a fun day to watch This is Spinal Tap and celebrate Nigel Tufnel Day.

Whatever significance 11/11/11 held for people, the common thread was that many of them took to Twitter to talk about it. And Twitter has created a visualization for the “once in a lifetime” moment:

This clip is a visualization of all the Tweets mentioning 11:11 on 11.11.11. Each “1” is a location that moves with the conversation on Twitter. Their scale varies depending on the volume of Tweets posted from the location they represent. You can see the main wave move from right to left, and then a second one that occurred at 11 p.m. around the world.

Look, the world is doing the numerology wave. Cute.

Did you participate in the online conversation about 11/11/11? Even if you spent your time disparaging everyone who cared about the numerical oddity, you were still probably involved in this global visualization.

I’m not holding my breath for this much buzz when pi day (extended) rolls around on March 14th, 2015. (3.1415).

Not only has Facebook gathered huge numbers of members – half a billion at the last count – but the social network has also become the number one social presence in many countries, displacing some home-grown domestic social networks.

A glance at the world map of social networks 2010 you see above shows a clear picture of the colonization (for want of a better word) of Europe, for instance, where Facebook has displaced its competitors in France (Skyrock used to be #1) and Germany (StudiVZ, although they might argue the rank).

Map author Vincenzo Cosenza provides an additional view, showing the top three social networking sites (SNS) in nine countries:

An interesting aspect is how Twitter appears in this list: in second place in Australia, Canada and the UK and third place in France, Spain and the US. I’ve always seen Twitter as a social network as opposed to simply a micro-blogging tool; it looks like many others do as well.

Still, in global domination of online social networks, it looks very clear that Facebook reigns supreme.

Last week Google revealed the fastest growing search terms for the United States, which we looked at here. Now Google has released their year-end Zeitgeist, looking at a number of categories in (for the first time) over 30 different countries.

"So, what do we in this global village have in common?" asks Google VP Search Products and User Experience, Marissa Mayer. "Mainly a strong interest in socializing and politics. Social networks comprised four out of the top 10 global fastest-rising queries, while the U.S. election held everyone’s interest around the globe. Republican VP candidate, Sarah Palin, may have lost in the election, but she was the #1 fastest-rising query on our global list (Obama was #6)."

Let’s look at that global list:

 1. sarah palin
 2. beijing 2008
 3. facebook login
 4. tuenti
 5. heath ledger
 6. obama
 7. nasza klasa
 8. wer kennt wen
 9. euro 2008
 10. jonas brothers

As far as the U.S. is concerned, Google provided the following information:

I would have expected the Jonas Brothers to make a top ten list here in the U.S where they are myesteriously absent., but I’m a little surprised to see them make it on a global scale. I apparently have a lot to learn about the Jonas Bros.
