It’s always great to see nerds in love. It’s not surprising that those passionate about the geeky things they love would be similarly passionate about the people they love. When it comes to marriage proposals, leave it up to the nerds to combine all of their passions.

YouTube user satisyingsigh (Trevor in real life) decided that PAX Prime in Seattle this past weekend was the perfect time to pop the question. Since the couple were doing a little Fallout cosplay at the event, he decided to make his proposal Fallout themed. From Trevor’s video description:

We had been saving up bottle caps since November 2011 with the intention of using them at PAX Prime 2012 to attempt and purchase something from the Bethesda booth (the creators of Fallout 3). It was originally going to be a sort of “gag” to try and score some interesting swag from Bethesda, and in Alisha’s mind, it stayed that way.

So we get to to the booth, hand a lady our caps, and she pulls out a locked ammo case. The walkway was getting crowded, so we walked over to a nearby table to try and pick the lock. Alisha had a key in her pocket that I had slipped in there earlier, but my plan to get her to discover it failed, so i pretended to have picked the lock (because I had a spare key). Alisha pulls a wadded up piece of brown paper out of the shells and gunpowder that were in the ammo box. She unravels it to find a ring box. Yay! Until i stupidly drop it and execute a quick recovery.

That, my friends, is a man who has taken the Lady Killer perk.

This coming Saturday will be the 100th birthday of Alan Turing, the English mathematician famous for helping to break the German Enigma encryption during World War II. Though the man died in 1954, his legacy as one of the founders of computer science lives on. Vint Cerf, Google’s chief internet evangelist, wrote a thorough retrospective on Turing’s life and legacy for the BBC this week. An exhibit on Turing is opening in London this week.

In 1936, Turing described his idea for a machine that would observe symbols on a strip of tape and, according to a set of rules, would print other symbols somewhere on the strip. The description is, in fact, a simple computer capable of executing any computer algorithm. Though our computers have become unbelievably better than Turing’s machine, there are still those who hold a bit of nostalgia for the simpler demonstration of computing logic.

A team of researchers at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has created a representation of a Turing machine built entirely from LEGOs. CWI is a national research center for math and computer science in the Netherlands. Take a look below at the video CWI has provided, demonstrating how the machine was built to use flippable LEGO joints as the Turing machine “tape.”

Whether it’s a throwing knife, a headshot, or a plasma sword, insta-kill weapons are powerful, yet limited, weapons. They normally take a bit of skill to wield properly, and will more than likely get a new player killed as he or she unskillfully tries to close into melee range. But in the hands of a master they can rule a game.

What would happen if modern multiplayer games were somehow combined and one character from each game was given its games’ signature one-shot weapon? The guys at Corridor Digital have answered that question.

Take a look at their video pitting characters from Halo, Mass Effect, Goldeneye, Modern Warfare, and other franchises as they take their respective insta-gib’s into a humorous battle royale. Who will win? I won’t spoil it, but there is no disputing the winner once you see him in action:

Corridor Digital are the same people who brought you the FUS RO DAH video we showed you a month ago. According to their Facebook page, they are “dudes who love shooting and vfx.” Also, they live in Los Angeles, so with their video effects skills and humorous sensibilities, I don’t think it will be long before they are hired by a production company.

The Portal 2 downloadable content (DLC) that was released this week isn’t just a custom map maker. Ok, it pretty much is, but Valve has never been a company to simply throw something out to make a quick dime. It’s clear that Valve has put its special finishing touches on the “Perpetual Testing Initiative.” This can be seen particularly in the hilarious message from Aperture Science founder Cave Johnson that play when a test subject enters a custom chamber. Actor J.K. Simmons recorded tons of new audio for the DLC, and Valve’s writing staff used the opportunity to have some fun.

Valve has carried over the multi-verse con conceit from the DLC’s silly trailer and continued to have Cave Johnson rant about evil multiple-universe versions of himself and insane alternate-dimension scenarios. To make sure you don’t miss one, YouTube user ac1th has posted all of the Cave Johnson audio, in order, played back-to-back. Listen to the audio below and hear how, impossibly, the messages continue to get weirder and stay funny all the way until the end.

The comments actually seem to have a small narrative flow, so, this video is technically full of spoilers, but you would have to enter hundreds of custom test chambers to hear them all. Trust me, these messages are fantastic when played back-to back. After you listen to the whole thing (you will), leave a comment below and let me know your favorite parts.

Happy Star Wars Day! Every May 4th is designated by geeks all over the world as Star Wars day. Why you ask? May 4th. May the 4th be with you. Get it? Yeah. Now that you are appropriately bemused and/or disgusted with that joke, take a look at the palate cleanser below. It features lovely brunette women in a bubble bath, lightsabers, and a Wookie:

Actor Seth Green created this satirical ad short to celebrate Star Wars Day. It is based on a similar fake ad for “SABER” body spray from 2009 that was written and directed by Adam Green.

The speed with which this playful splash-fight escalates is remarkable, though these girls might want to look to their Sith elders (grandma lightsaber) to improve their lackluster lightsaber skills. I don’t even want to imagine the amount of brushing it must take to get all the tangles out of a wet Wookie.

CBS this week announced the release date for the Blu-ray edition of the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. A six-disc Blu-ray set will be released on July 24. The show has been remastered from original film elements …

CBS this week announced the release date for the Blu-ray edition of the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. A six-disc Blu-ray set will be released on July 24. The show has been remastered from original film elements and will feature 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. As with the DVD release of the series, the discs will be packed with bonus material, including interviews, archival footage, and the gag reel.

As engadget pointed out, a preview Blu-ray was released in March. That disc contained the series’ first episode, Encounter at Farpoint, and two other episodes. One, Sins of the Father, is a 3rd season episode involving Klingon politics. The other is a 5th season episode, The Inner Light, in which Captain Picard learns to play a Ressikan flute.

The trailer for that preview release is below and was uploaded to the CBSHEonDVD YouTube channel, a CBS Home Entertainment channel that promotes DVD and Blu-ray releases. It seems to be an afterthought. The trailer attempts to show how much better the series will look with before and after shots, but the video was only uploaded in 380p, meaning no difference can be seen.

What do you think? Will you be waiting in line on July 24th? Will you have time to save up enough money for what is sure to be an expensive release? Leave a comment below and let me know.

If you wanted to re-watch the classics but couldn’t find the time, here’s your chance. 56 episodes, the full first 2 seasons, simultaneously, and with sound! You’ll be finished in no time

Twilight1138 does admit to a slight cheat, though. Since the first season pilot “The Man Trap” is much longer than the other episodes, so it was replaced with the first episode of the third season, “Spock’s Brain.” Still, it’s 56 episodes of classic science fiction to fill your screen with.

A few things from the video stand out. It’s fun to see how much screen time Kirk, Spock, and McCoy get. The flow of episodes is very similar, with action coming at around the same times. Things really start to heat up around the 35-minute mark, and then the climaxes hit at around minute 45, accompanied by lots of quick-cut editing. This is followed by the denouement, which might be the best part of the video. Nearly every episode features a smug close-up of William Shatner delivering a profound quip, and a reaction from Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley.

The music cues follow the action and are really a highlight of this video. The horns pick up and punctuate the action-packed moments. Mostly, though, its sounds the same as a large, crowded Star Trek convention.

Take a look for yourself and feast on the essence of what the original Star Trek series is:

With the EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO on hold today due to a patch-related mix-up, you may be hard-up for your Star Wars fix. You’ll be happy, then, to see this video portraying one older woman’s lightsaber skills:

It seems granny doesn’t appreciate dubstep. And, though her technique is odd and her stance is unconventional, that woman has perfected her lightsaber throw. Let this be a lesson to young people everywhere: respect the elderly. You never know which of them might have a deep connection to the force. Also (and I’m just speculating here) midichlorian count might increase with age.

The poster of the video, andrewmfilms, has more of these short films on his YouTube page. All of them blend video game and pop culture references into real-life scenarios. Some good ones include Real Life Super Mario Bros., Minecraft: Zombie Attack, and Metal Slug in Real Life.

Here is a found footage-style short film andrewmfilms posted a month ago that could serve as a public service announcement, highlighting the dangers of abusing ancient dragon phrases:

Wow. Perhaps ZeniMax Media’s recent trademarking of the famous dragon shout was actually a bid to save lives.

The design for this chess-transformer was first posted on Thingiverse, a MakerBot, Industries website that allows users to post digital designs for objects that can be printed using a 3D printer, such as a MakerBot. Thingiverse user cymon designed the robot as an entry into MakerBot, Industries’ “Design a Chess Set” challenge. The winner of the challenge will receive their very own MakerBot Replicator.

Cymon has named his design “Action Chess.” Once printed, the artsy chess pieces fit together to make a chess-robot action figure. Cymon describes his inspiration in the design description:

Now you can battle your chess two ways. Traditionally on a chess board or combine your powers to form the ultimate chess fighting robot.

Had this idea a while ago and this contest gave me the perfect opportunity to make it happen. Having to use Tinkercad to make it happen was wonderfully educational too. It’s a limited tool in many way [sic] and the limitations were in their own way liberating.

Here are the amusing instructions cymon provides for creating the Action Chess set:

	1. Print a plate for each side or print the individual pieces the number of times specified.
2. Play chess or…

	3. Slide the tab from the queen into the notch on the king and slide downards to lock the body together.
4. Take the 2 type A pawns and slide into the shoulder slots.
5. Take 4 type B pawns and lock their feet together to form 2 legs.
6. Flip the knights over for feet and snap the legs into them.
7. Snap the legs into the body.
8. Take the remaing 2 type B pawns and lock their feet into the feet of the rooks to form two upper arms.
9. Snap the shoulders pawns into the upper arms.
10. Snap the upper arm pawns into the bishops to form the hands.

Cymon’s real name is Joseph Larson, from Provo Utah. He has an online shop where you can buy some of the 3D-printed things he has designed. Unfortunately, the robot chess set is not available for purchase yet, but he does sell H.P. Lovecraft-inspired chess pawns and a nifty-looking TARDIS ring. Also not available for purchase are the stackable chess pieces Larson designed, which would be very handy for chess-on-the-go.

MakerBots are (relatively) inexpensive 3D printers with which a user can create plastic models of objects. The printers extrude plastics in layers, determined by the designs on Thingiverse, to build a huge variety of objects. Here’s a video demonstrating the newest top-of-the-line MakerBot that cymon might (should) win with his design:
