Smartphone users now have their own version of YouTube. The company says that smartphone users with "capable" browsers like the iPhone, G1, and Palm Pre can access the mobile site.

"As more and more people are using the browser on their smartphones for checking email, visiting websites, and even accessing YouTube, we want to make sure that we provide the best possible YouTube experience on your mobile browser," says YouTube Product Manager Dwipal Desai.

Users can log into their account, view their favorites, and find and share videos just like normal. "It’s part of our mission to create the best possible YouTube experience for you, whether you use the site on your computer, in your living room, or on the go," says Desai.

To access the new mobile site, just go to YouTube.com from your mobile phone. From there you’ll be taken to a new website designed specifically for your mobile device.

This version of YouTube is not available on all devices, keep in mind. According to some people commenting on YouTube’s announcement, it doesn’t work on the Blackberry Bold, or the Sony PSP, to name a couple.

It’s gong to be wise for YouTube to be optimized for as many devices as possible, especially now that it has its own AdSense-type program. The site is also catering to new a lot more these days, which could increase demand for the site for users on the go.

In a Google support forum for the Android market, a user asked, "Does anyone know why Shazam and Calorie Counter are no longer available in the Android Market?"

"If you’re using an unlocked, developer phone, you’ll be unable to view any copy-protected application, including Shazam and Calorie Counter. This is a change that was made recently," responded Google Employee Ash.

To recap, Google is no longer allowing users with unlocked G1 phones to view copy-protected applications. Nancy Gohring with IDG News Service speculates:

While Google offered only slim details about why it made the change, it could be an attempt to close a loophole that reportedly allows users of the unlocked phone to download paid applications for free. "The Developer version of the G1 is designed to give developers complete flexibility," Google said in a statement. "These phones give developers of handset software full permissions to all aspects of the device… We aren’t distributing copy protected applications to these phones in order to minimize unauthorized copy of the applications."

Needless to say, developers are unhappy about the situation. The phone costs $400 to developers who have paid $25 to join the Android developer program. Gohring points to one developer calling for a "developer revolt" in which they would all pull their apps from the marketplace. Clearly a nerve has been struck.

To use the voice search function:

1. On the home screen search widget, look for the microphone button next to the search box and search button (as pictured below).

2. Press the button and wait for the "speak now" prompt.

3. Say your query, and you’ll see results formatted for Android.

You can also get to the microphone button anytime you’re in the Android browser by pressing the "menu" button and tapping "search."

"This makes doing successive voice-triggered searches — and mobile web surfing — easy and fast," says Software Engineer Jeff Hamilton on the Android Team. "Try speaking your favorite web sites, then tapping on the top search results to get to them."

Hamilton also notes that you can use the "voice dialer" app to search for your contacts with your voice when you want to call somebody. If what you say isn’t recognized correctly, you can tap the down arrow to the right of the search box to you’ll find a list of suggest queries.

Google introduced today My Maps Editor for Android. It is a tool that allows you to created, edit, share, and view personalized maps on Android phones synched with the My Maps tab on Google Maps.

So what are some practical uses for this? Google Software Engineer Brian Cornell says: There are plenty of ways to put this to good use during the holiday season:

     * Plan out your holiday shopping. Create a map on your computer with markers for all of the stores you need to visit. Color code the markers according to importance, category, or sales. Then as you visit each store, change the icon to indicate that you’ve been there and list what items you were able to get in the description. If you find a store you didn’t think of, you can quickly add a marker for it to help future planning.

     * Make a map of holiday decorations and displays that you see. Every time you see an interesting holiday display, use the Mark My Location feature to create a marker, then edit the details and add a photo of the display right from the phone’s camera. Share your map with your friends and family to show them the best holiday displays in your area. Just go to the maps list, tap and hold on your map, and select Share Map to share it right from your phone.

     * Keep track of your travels. You can map out your travel plans and take them with you wherever you go. Add markers while you travel to mark interesting places, and take lots of pictures and attach them to the markers. Then when you get back, you can share the map with your friends and show everyone what your did on your vacation with a map and pictures to help them really visualize the trip.

The application is available for download from the Android Market, which is currently available for the T-Mobile G1 phone. It should be a great tool for frequent travelers looking to remember spots of interest in cities they intend to return to.

Google said today that AdWords will now be available on the iPhone and on the T-Mobile G1 along with other mobile devices that have full HTML browsers.

The Google Mobile Blog offers details. "Now, advertisers will be able to display ads exclusively on these mobile devices, create campaigns for them, and get separate performance reporting. If you prefer not to show your desktop ads on these phones, you can opt out and show ads only on desktop and laptop computers."

Google says that unlike standard mobile ads you don’t need to format your ads for mobile phones to show your ads on the G1 and iPhone. Because the G1 and iPhone has full Internet browsers, you will be able to display your standard AdWords ads and landing pages on these devices without having to modify them.

Here is how to get started. "To target ads for G1 and iPhone, go to your campaign settings tab in your AdWords account. Then for the "Device Platform" option under ‘Networks and Bidding,’ select ‘iPhones and other mobile devices with full internet browsers.’"

"As additional devices that use full browsers enter the market, your ads will show on those phones, too. You can visit the AdWords Help Center for more detailed instructions and watch my video below for a quick demo. If you currently have an AdWords campaign running, by default your campaign will show ads on desktop and laptop computers, as well as iPhone and G1."

Google is giving those interested in the new Google Phone (the G1 from T-Mobile) a closer look at the different aspects of it on the Google Mobile Blog. Today Android Product Manager David Conway talks about the Google Maps capabilities on the device:

You can pan around and zoom in and out easily using just your thumb on the touchscreen — a big plus for all those times when that other hand is unavailable. And if I want to see a restaurant or building up close, I can switch to Street View and view a panorama from street level. I can even turn on Compass mode to let me look around the panorama by moving my phone up, down, and to the side. It’s like popping up a virtual periscope anywhere you want to check out what’s there with your own eyes. Check out the video below for a quick demo. Note that Street View on Android is only available in the US at this time.

When I’m in a new city or just a new part of town, I like to turn on My Location. It can use GPS or just the nearest cell tower to tell me where I am and re-center my position in the middle of my screen when I approach the edge. When I’m walking or in a taxi in a dense city, like New York, I zoom in to street level and turn on GPS for the highest accuracy.

With the G1, you can also save search results to contacts, so when you find a business using Google Maps, you can conveniently store the map. This should be a convenient feature for people who travel a lot, particularly to the same cities repeatedly. If you find a great Chinese restaurant in LA once, you can easily find it again via your contacts.

Developers are free to use Android’s MapView and location APIs to build "location-aware" mobile applications, so I would expect to see a lot of cool things happening out of that. Conway cites Cab4me and Locale, which were winners in the Android Developer Challenge.

These apps and Google Maps for Android are bound to be exceptionally cool once the GeoEye imagery is implemented throughout (the first image was released today). Anyone used Google Maps on Android much yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

Google is giving those interested in the new Google Phone (the G1 from T-Mobile) a closer look at the different aspects of it on the Google Mobile Blog. Today Android Software Engineer Andy Stadler talks about the search capabilities on the device:

We’ve integrated Search with applications in a variety of ways, in order to make it universally accessible. Every searchable application includes a Search menu option. Some applications (like Maps) support type-to-search. Just start typing, and Maps will automatically open the Search UI for you! Some applications (like Android Market) have Search buttons, while others have Search widgets (like the home screen). Finally, on the T-Mobile G1, there’s even a dedicated Search key on bottom row of the keyboard. Just press it and start typing your query.

They’ve incorporated Google Suggest into Android, which is probably even more of a useful feature on a mobile device than it is on a PC. This way, if a suggestion comes up that the user likes, they can simply touch it and go to the results page. Searches in Gmail and YouTube also have suggestion features based on your past queries serving basically the same purpose.

Google has made the search API available to third-party developers so they can integrate search functionality into their applications. "What’s more exciting to me is that developers can improve upon search as well," says Stadler. "Maybe someone will find and provide new sources of searchable knowledge, or serve ‘mind reading’ suggestions, or display search results in a more informative and beautiful way?"

The Google Mobile Blog will be posting looks at each of the other G1 applications over the next couple weeks, so we should also be getting closer looks at Maps, Gmail, Calendar, Google Talk, and YouTube features as well. How do those of you who have the phone like the usability of its apps?

T-Mobile’s G1 phone was officially announced today. It’s going to be the first mobile phone based on Android, the Google-and-partners powered (and supposedly soon to be open source released) mobile operating system. T-Mobile says the phone has a touch screen, a keyboard, and includes different Google apps, like Google Maps or Gmail, with data synchronization features to Google’s tools. The HTC-built G1 comes with a 3-megapixel camera and is wi-fi enabled. It’s also connected to Amazon’s DRM-free MP3 music store, and an Android applications directory. The back of the phone has the Google logo on it.

According to T-Mobile, the phone will be available in the US on October 22 for a price of $179 with a two-year contract. It will then be available in the UK in November, and across Europe in the first quarter of 2009, T-Mobile says.

There’s an introductory promotional video tour available, and several other videos at YouTube show off some of the features of the G1. Walt Mossberg reviews this iPhone competitor with further details. Walt writes, “Most importantly, the G1 complements its touch screen with a physical keyboard, the lack of which has made the iPhone a non-starter for some users. The G1’s keyboard is revealed when you slide open its screen. The keys are a bit flat, and you have to reach your right thumb around a bulging portion of the phone’s body to type, but it’s a real keyboard. (…) A second big feature, or limitation, of the G1 – depending on your point of view – is that it is tightly tied to Google’s web-based email, contacts and calendar programs. In fact, you must have a Google … account to use the phone, and can only synchronize the phone’s calendar and address book with Google online services. Unlike the iPhone, it doesn’t work with Microsoft Exchange, and it can’t physically be synced with a PC-based calendar or contacts program, like Microsoft Outlook.”

Today’s the big day for the Google Phone. T-Mobile will announce the availability of the G1 today, the HTC-manufactured phone featuring Google’s Android mobile platform. The phone is expected to be the top competitor for Apple’s iPhone, and will supposedly cost $199 with a two-year contract.

While we still await the official announcement, the Boy Genius Report has scored some screenshots of the phone, providing a good look into the phone itself as well as the operating system. "The desktop shot looks roughly similar to the Android desktop shots that we’ve seen from the beginning, with a collection of customizable widgets that display a variety of at-a-glance info and access to commonly used applications," writes Joshua Karp at the site. "The presence of a MyFaves icon ensures compatibility with T-Mobile’s unlimited calling service."

The real question is just how competitive the market is going to get as a result of Google being involved. "While search won’t necessarily play the identical role in mobile it does online, it will still be a prominent part of the mobile Internet experience," says Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land. "You can bet Google is banking on that." Sterling also has an in depth look at said market, taking into account data from Nielsen as well as Android Co-founder Andy Rubin’s recent "future of mobile" post on the Google Blog.

Either way, the G1 should be a strong weapon for T-Mobile, provided it doesn’t face any iPhone 3G-like issues. Hopefully they can at least avoid the false advertising controversy. For all the G1 info you want, the T-Mobile press conference starts at 10:30 AM (with an on-demand version being made available just after).
