So does Gmail if you prefer to use Google tools. And if you would like to send your old e mail to your Gmail account you can try an experimental program web site that we launched today called Gmail Uploader that converts mbox files into gmail. This is a tool that we developed and are going to offer to others to use. This is a slow process but with this you will finally be able to search all your email. Until Gmailuploader old email is like having pictures stored in a box that you cannot open. Gmail will soon be of unlimited capacity and its great to have all your e mail in one site including your old e mail. If you have Microsoft Outlook you have to first install Thunderbird in Windows, and send the Thunderbird files to Gmail Uploader.

See, they’ve released this Gmail Uploader tool that lets you transfer email inbox files right into Gmail, letting you take all your old email, dump it in there, and switch to Gmail full-time. According to them, this’ll make a lot more sense soon, since Gmail will have unlimited capacity. That’s news to me. If Gmail is going unlimited (and it does make sense they’d know, since Google is a major investor), it’d be a lot easier to import old emails, which for many people measures multiple gigabytes. Yahoo already does unlimited email storage, so why not Google?

A deal between Time Warner Cable (TWC) and FON will allow TWC customers to share Wi-Fi connections with other FON users.

The idea is to share one’s broadband connection wirelessly, and in turn have free Wi-Fi access from other FON-enabled connections anywhere they can be found.

An AP report noted what Om Malik told people three weeks ago: FON and TWC would make a deal that most ISPs have avoided.

Through the use of a FON router, TWC customers can open their wireless connections to other FON members (called Foneros) and to non-FON members. Those non-Foneras pay a $3 charge for a Day Pass to use a FON connection.

It’s expected that FON and TWC will split the non-member fees paid for access to broadband service. The deal is limited to residential broadband connections, and that would seem to restrict any broader appeal it could reach in places like airports and hotels.

Starbucks in particular has had a deal in place with wireless service provider T-Mobile to offer Wi-Fi for a daily $9.95 charge. The coffee chain operates about 8,000 stores in the US alone, some of them within airports and upscale metro hotel properties.

FON charges about $40 for its router, and is likely the company’s main revenue generator. Details about the deal have not been announced, so how TWC will make money on this is not known yet.

There is one aspect to FON that may have been missed in the announcement. FON has Google and Skype as backers, and FON has previously promised, but not delivered a Skype handset that will work with any FON access point.

The delays in making the Skype handset available make us wonder if the much-rumored Google phone could debut with FON connectivity. Since FON delivers Wi-Fi, a handset carrying Google’s software products and advertising would be a natural fit for it.

Um, I see an article in the Wall Street Journal about some bloggers who are getting compensated by Fon for being part of their board of directors or advisors or stuff like that.

Their “hype” of Von is being called into question.

For the record, if I receive compensation (or free stuff) from a company other than Microsoft I will disclose that. I’ve been offered a lot of board seats and stuff lately and I’ve turned them down. Why? Cause I work for Microsoft. Getting approval to do those kinds of things just takes too much work and, anyway, it complicates my life too much at the moment and it’s hard enough to keep track of the bias that being a Microsoft employee places on me.

Anyway, I have not gotten any compensation by Fon. In fact, it is funded by competitors of Microsoft. So, when I say it’s an interesting idea and one that I wish we had funded too, you can see I’m being straight up.

That said, bloggers, we need to disclose our conflicts of interest up front (and I would put a disclaimer on everything you write about such a company). Next week I’ll be skiing for free at a Colorado Resort, for instance. I will disclose that and will remind you of my conflict if I write anything about that resort (Steve Broback of Blog Business Summit arranged a trip for several bloggers to try out the resort’s amenities).

FON wants users to sign up to share their wireless broadband access with others, an idea that has netted the company some $21.7 million from Google, Skype, Sequoia Capital, and Index Ventures.

Is it a unique way to develop a wireless network around the world, or a clever concept doomed to fail should ISPs choose to ban it?

Whatever it is today can be called “funded” as FON took in $21.7 million in venture capital funding, the New York Times said.

FON’s concept has broadband home or business users with wireless routers becoming FON members and making their wireless access available to other FON users. The initial stage of membership, called a Linus, has members sharing their connections for free with other members while being entitled to use other free FON hotspots wherever they can be found.

A future membership option, called Bills, lets those users who provide FON access charge other FON members to use it. The Bills keep a percentage of the fees FON charges to non-members, which FON calles Aliens.

FON addressed the security aspect of their service on their blog:

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>We add security to your wireless network without encryption in two ways. The first is that when you install FON or buy a FON router it creates two segmented networks. One network is for people that connect over the wireless antennas (the visitor network) and the other network is for your personal computers that are connected locally (your home network). We separate the visitor and home networks using a firewall.

The second thing we do is we give you the ability to restrict access to your hotspot only to FON users and specific people you trust, of course you can leave it open to anyone, but our default policy is to limit it to Foneros, Aliens and your family. When someone connects to your network over the wireless antenna, we restrict their access and only allow them to visit the FON authentication page. If they are Foneros then we allow them to browse the Internet, but not connect to your personal home network.

Respected Wi-Fi Net News blogger Glenn Fleishman posted his thoughts on how FON might spend that VC money:

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>The investment capital they’ve raised signals that while their network might be extended on a peer-to-peer basis, they’ll be putting their money into seeding the network by putting nodes in well-trafficked areas, probably in the thousands.

He also noted the obvious problem facing FON is one that faces Skype: what if the Internet service providers choose to enforce terms of service that do not permit sharing connections outside the household? That could be the motivation for using that cash to install those nodes.

Divining Google’s plans from its investments can be maddening. Paul Kederosky summarizes the Google equity “strategy”:

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>Once again, as in all of Google recent financial transactions, search is conspicuous only by its absence. Put differently, if you tried to abstract what Google does from its acquisitions and investment — Picasa, Blogger, dmarc, FON, etc. — you’d have no frickin’ clue it was the Interweb’s leading search firm.
