Yahoo YSlow Shows Site Slowness

A Firefox add-on called YSlow from Yahoo works with the Firebug plugin to show webmasters the causes of problems with their website’s performance.

By using the YSlow for Firebug addition to the Firefox browser, webmasters can review several views of their website. These views will help in diagnosing why a website responds slower than sites considered to be “high-performance.”

The Yahoo Developer Network release YSlow, which requires the Firebug add-on for Firefox. Once in place, YSlow looks at a site’s performance and stats to determine where troubleshooting should take place.

In the Performance View, YSlow recommends where changes can be made if they are needed. A site that makes a lot of HTTP requests, or doesn’t use a content delivery network for eligible content, would have those sections of the report flagged for review.

Under the YSlow Stats View, the add-on calculates the size of a page for both empty and primed caches. Also, YSlow shows information about cookies the server places on the browser for the page.

A Components View lists all page components by type and other details. Webmasters can view the HTTP response headers for any of those components.

Page Load Times Update

In my original post I mentioned that in order to help reduce my blog’s load time I often use Web Page Analyzer and Octagate SiteTimer.

Since that post I have received a couple more suggestions for tools to use in order to help reduce Web Page Load Times.

WSOP is a desktop product which runs on windows. It comes with a 30 day free trial and the full license costs $97. WSOP offers many features including:

- Checking for slow pages and errors

- Detailed profiling of web pages

- Testing of dynamic content

- Custom load time conditions

- Comprehensive and customizable reports

- Improvement tips for each page

Fire Bug: Firebug is an open source performance monitoring tool which "Integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page." Read the FireBug blog for further discussions.

If you’re serious about speeding up web page load times make sure you add all of these tools to your performance monitoring toolkit.

Microsoft Guy Talking Firefox Extensions? Huh?

Yesterday at Northern Voice we had a panel discussion called “geeking out.”

My part of the panel was spent talking about Firefox extensions. Here’s an audio recording that Kevin Marks did. Huh? Hey, I’m interested in the topic and wanna know which Firefox extensions people find useful. Face-to-face with 100+ geeks you learn a lot that you can’t learn by reading random blogs. Mack Male took notes. “some of which include: Session Saver, Fangs, PDF Download, Download Status, Signature, Fasterfox, Web Developer, Firebug, etc.”

My favorites? Greasemonkey (lets you add all sorts of new behaviors, required for the cocomment greasemonkey script), IE Tab (lets you put IE inside Firefox), Performancing (lets you blog pages you visit), and Del.icio.us (lets you tag your pages and add them to Del.icio.us)
