I’m a not a big fan of Wiki technology, mostly because I find the markup annoying and the random nature of Wiki changes difficult to follow.

RSS also known as rich site summary or real simply syndication, arrived on the scene a number of years ago, but was only recently embraced by webmasters as a means to effectively syndicate content. RSS Feeds provide webmasters and content providers an avenue to provide concise summaries to prospective readers. Thousands of commercial web sites and blogs now publish content summaries in an RSS feed. Each item in the feed typically contains a headline; article summary and link back to the online article.

Consuming a Syndication Feed in an ASP.NET Web Page

In order to test the syndication engine we just created, let’s build an online news aggregator that allows for any number of syndication feeds. The aggregator user interface will be fairly straightforward, comprising of three frames, as shown in Figure 2. In the left frame, a list of the various syndication feeds will be listed. In the top right frame, the news items for the selected syndication feed will be displayed. Finally, in the bottom right frame, the title and description of the selected news item feed will be displayed, with a link to the news item. Note that this UI is pretty much the de facto standard UI for aggregators of all kinds, including news aggregators, email clients and newsgroup readers.

RSS feeds are in high demand. Having the ability to get live updates to topics of interest is seen as being very desirable. Google has filed a cease and desist order to stop RSS news feeds from using Google News as a source for headlines. The motion was filed against a programmer from Britain, named Julian Bond, who created the php script that crawls Google News.

Lets face it as much as we all rely on email communications it is not really a reliable technology.
