<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google Reader is <a href="http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2009/07/hearty-welcome-to-newsgator-users.html">becoming</a> the online companion to and synchronization platform for NewsGator&#8217;s RSS readers including FeedDemon and NetNewsWire. Users have until August 31 to migrate to Google Reader, when NewsGator will shut down NewsGator Online.</p>
<p><center><a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/NewsGatorOnline/Default.aspx"><img title="NewsGator Online" alt="NewsGator Online" src="http://images.ientrymail.com/webpronews/article_pics/newsgator-online.jpg" /></a></center></p>
<p><strong>To migrate RSS subscriptions, FeedDemon/NetNewsWire users will need to:</strong>&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote><p>1. Download the latest version of FeedDemon/NetNewsWire</p>
<p>2. Sign up for a Google Reader account</p>
<p>3. Associate the Google Reader account with the FeedDemon/NetNewsWire product (A step-by-step wizard is provided within the new version of FeedDemon/NetNewsWire</p></blockquote>
<p>There are different instructions for other NewsGator products here. NewsGator says <a href="http://blogs.newsgator.com/daily/2009/07/newsgator-consumer-rss-reader-product-changes-google-sync.html">on the company blog</a>:<br />
<em><br />
Users of FeedDemon, NetNewsWire for Mac, and NetNewsWire for the iPhone will have 30 days to download new versions of these applications that can synchronize with Google Reader. Syncing will give you a consistent reading experience across your PC, Mac, iPhone, and web browser. For example, if you add a new RSS feed, organize your folders, or mark some stories as read on one device, the changes will immediately reflect across the others.&nbsp; Users of NewsGator Go! can select from the mobile RSS reader options that synchronize with Google Reader.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The bottom line for you: we keep improving our client applications, and now you can sync with and use the web based RSS reader you&#8217;ve been asking for.&nbsp; We&#8217;ve been working with the Google team to make these changes as smooth as possible, and they are thrilled to welcome all NewsGator users to the Reader family. </em></p>
<p>New versions of FeedDemon and NetNewsWire are currently available, and a new version of NetNewsWire for the iPhone will be available soon. Check out the <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/productinfo/consumerinfo.aspx">FAQ page</a> for more information about changes to NewsGator&#8217;s RSS reader products.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Now <em>this</em> is useful &#8211; a free RSS reader for your mobile phone from <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/" title="NewsGator">NewsGator</a>.</p>
<p>What makes it especially interesting is that it&rsquo;s been released specifically for the iPhone &#8211; it&rsquo;s called <a href="http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release.do?id=754020&amp;k=" title="NewsGator Mobile for iPhone">NewsGator Mobile for iPhone</a> &#8211; but works on any mobile device.</p>
<p>Well, it works brilliantly on my <a href="http://www.nseries.com/products/n73/index.html" title="Nokia N73">Nokia N73</a> which is about as far from an <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone" title="iPhone">iPhone</a> as you can imagine.</p>
<p>Try it from your mobile phone &#8211; <a href="http://m.newsgator.com/" title="News Gator">http://m.newsgator.com/</a></p>
<p>Earlier this month, I <a href="http://www.nevillehobson.com/2007/07/07/newsgator-or-not/">wondered</a> whether a paid subscription with <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/NewsGatorOnline/Default.aspx" title="NewsGator Online">NewsGator Online</a> (NGO) was worth continuing or not as my preferred RSS reader is <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/" title="FeedDemon">FeedDemon</a>. Both synchronize together but I just don&rsquo;t use NGO (if I do use a web-based reader, it&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.google.com/reader/" title="Google Reader">Google Reader</a>).</p>
<p>In the end, I didn&rsquo;t continue a paid subscription but I do have the free one.</p>
<p>I still don&rsquo;t use NGO. But this mobile reader is great as it shows me on my phone all the feeds I subscribe to that are synchronized with FeedDemon.</p>
<p>Nice!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/" title="FeedDemon">FeedDemon</a><font color="#0066cc"> </font>is the Windows desktop RSS application I&rsquo;ve been using for the past few years. </p>
<p>And for the past few months, I&rsquo;ve been testing the various betas of the upcoming new version 2.5.<br />
<span id="more-38020"></span> <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/"><img width="57" hspace="6" height="55" border="0" align="left" title="Feeddemon" src="http://images.ientrymail.com/webpronews/articlepictures/feeddemon.gif" alt="Feeddemon" /></a></p>
<p>The final product was quietly released last Friday. I&rsquo;ve just noticed an <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/" title="announcement on the product page">announcement on the product page</a> at NewsGator re version 2.5 availability, so it&rsquo;s time to mention it now!</p>
<p>If you use FeedDemon, this is definitely an upgrade to have &#8211; see the <a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/readme/" title="FeedDemon release notes">release notes</a>. </p>
<p>If you don&rsquo;t, it&rsquo;s worth checking out &#8211; you can download a free 30-day trial.</p>
<p>Here are the top five new features in&nbsp;new version 2.5:</p>
<ol>
<li>Synchronized news bins with shared RSS feeds &#8211; share a FeedDemon &ldquo;news bin&rdquo; (similar to a link blog) as an RSS feed so that others may subscribe to it</li>
<p></p>
<li>Vastly improved offline support &#8211; including the ability to prefetch links and images in all unread items for offline reading</li>
<p></p>
<li>Completely rewritten &ldquo;Popular Topics&rdquo; &#8211; view the most popular topics in all the feeds you&rsquo;re subscribed to, alongside the topics that are popular with all NewsGator subscribers</li>
<p></p>
<li>Embedded video support &#8211; video objects embedded in feed items can now be securely viewed inside FeedDemon</li>
<p></p>
<li>&ldquo;Who&rsquo;s linking here?&rdquo; &#8211; with a single click, find out who in the blogosphere is linking to a specific post in your subscriptions</li>
</ol>
<p>One feature I&rsquo;ll add is support for podcasting. Not new by any means &#8211; that support has been in FD since at least version 2.0 &#8211; but very useful indeed to have your RSS reader as your podcatcher. </p>
<p>I use a combination of FD and <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes" title="iTunes">iTunes</a> to manage all my podcast subscriptions, no other software needed for that. (Speaking of iTunes, the <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936824/en-us" title="Vista fix">Vista fix</a> was finally released last week.)</p>
<p>All further advances for the best Windows RSS reader by far.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/FeedDemon/" title="FeedDemon">Go get it!</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With over 3 million blogs created in the third quarter of 2006 and around 1,000 blogs coming online every day according to Technorati, people might get confused by all the industry buzz words and lingo.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re just looking for some basic blog terminology so you can feel like you&#8217;re &#8220;part of it,&#8221; then read on. If you&#8217;re looking for something a bit more advanced, check back in a few days for more advanced blog terminology.</p>
<p>Here are some important terms to know and why they are important to you. Even if it&#8217;s just to impress your nerd friend with terms like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moblog" class="bluelink">moblogging</a> and other <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/19/magazine/19wwln_safire.html?ex=1298005200&#038;en=a5d06ad7e7aca6e6&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss" class="bluelink">blargon</a>. </p>
<p><b>Blog</b>: Essentially a contraction of the words web log, or the word weblog, whichever you prefer. Blogs are coming to mean different things to different people, but basically a blog is a way to push content (usually chronologically) on a page, much like a journal.</p>
<p><b>Aggregator</b>: An aggregator can help you to read content from blogs without having to go to the actual page. It is a piece of software that combines excerpts or updates from blogs so you can read them on your computer or browser without going to the original site. Below are some sites from which you can download aggregators (some for your computer, some for your browser). It is also useful to know that some other terms that refer to the same basic definition of an aggregator. These other terms include feed reader, feed aggregator, news reader, news aggregator and RSS aggregator and reader.</p>
<p><b>Desktop:</b><br />
<a href="http://www.feedreader.com/download" class="bluelink">Feed Reader</a><br />
<a href="http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=FeedDemon" class="bluelink">News Gator (FeedDemon)</a></p>
<p>Browser:<br />
<a href="http://www.bloglines.com/register" class="bluelink">Bloglines</a><br />
<a href="http://www.rojo.com/signup/" class="bluelink">Rojo</a><br />
<a href="http://www.rssreader.com/download.htm" class="bluelink">RSS Reader</a></p>
<p><b>Blogger</b>: This term can be used two different ways. It can mean any person who publishes content to a blog or it can refer to Google&#8217;s hosted blog service, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/start" class="bluelink">Blogger</a>. When referring to Google&#8217;s Blogger site, the &#8220;B&#8221; is usually capitalized; when talking about someone who posts content to a blog, the &#8220;b&#8221; is not necessarily capitalized.</p>
<p><b>Blogosphere</b>: Generally, this encompasses all the blogs (commercial, personal, etc.) in the blogging community.</p>
<p><b>Blogroll</b>: This refers to a list of links to other blogs that the author(s) of a blog also read regularly. The blogroll is usually located on the sidebar on the blog page. So if you like what you are reading, you mightwant to check out some other blogs that might also interest you and &#8220;blogroll&#8221; them.</p>
<p><b>Permalink</b>: This is another contraction from the term permanent link.Essentially it is a way to keep a URL for a particular blog entry or post.</p>
<p><b>Post</b>: This is any published content on a blog. A blog is comprised of individual posts that are arranged in chronological order, usually with the most recent on top.</p>
<p><b>Comment</b>: This allows people who are reading the blog to comment on the author&#8217;s opinion or offer supplemental information or anything else related to the post they wish to have published in the comments section (below the post). Feel free to comment on this post with any relevant information or anything you would like to see here that you can&#8217;t find.</p>
<p><b>Ping</b>: This is a notice that goes out when a blog is updated. When blogs are updated they &#8220;ping&#8221; certain sites and services letting them know that their blog is updated. Tag: This is a label assigned to a blog entry to categorize or help define its content. The use of tags was initiated by Technorati and they use tags to organize blogs in their system. These terms are basic terms that users and novice bloggers should be familiar with so they can talk intelligently about what they do and understand what others are saying. If you&#8217;re looking for some more detailed blog terminology, I will be putting up additional terms as well as resources for sprucing up and optimizing your blog.</p>

<li>I don&#8217;t really open more than about 10 tabs at max and thus the individual close button is a boon.</li>
<li>I love the realtime spell check.</li>
<li>The seamless integration of Feeds is another kick-ass feature. You can <a href="http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/07/firefox-20-tutorial-add-new-rss.html" class="bluelink">customize</a> it to your choice of application to handle the Feeds. For instance, I&#8217;ve defaulted it to <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/" class="bluelink">Newsgator</a> Online which syncs with<a href="http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=NetNewsWire" class="bluelink"> NetNewsWire </a>for the <a href="http://mac.brajeshwar.com/" class="bluelink">Mac</a> and <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=FeedDemon" class="bluelink">FeedDemon</a> for Windows.</li>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new beta version of the popular <a href="http://www.feeddemon.com/" class="bluelink">FeedDemon</a> RSS aggregator for Windows is now available.</p>
<p>Below are details of what&#8217;s in this beta which will make it into the final release version once the testing is over and done with.</p>
<p>A feature I like a lot with this beta is its seamless integration with <a href="http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/" class="bluelink">Windows Live Writer</a>, the blog editor from Microsoft, so that you can easily blog items directly from FeedDemon.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve always been able to do this if you have an external blog editor installed on your computer. With this beta, though, it can automatically integrate WLW with FD with just a click or two.</p>
<p>This post is a perfect example of how easy it is to blog items from FD with WLW. In this case, I highlighted Nick Bradbury&#8217;s post in FD, right click > Send to > Default blog publishing tool.</p>
<p>It appears in WLW editing mode in the style and format of my blog. Cool.</p>
<p>This new beta is worth checking out for all the other features as indicated in Nick&#8217;s post below:</p>
<p>I&#8217;m pleased to announce that FeedDemon 2.1 Beta 2a is <a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/beta/" class="bluelink">now available</a>. As you can see from the <a href="" class="bluelink">release notes</a>, there are a lot of changes in FeedDemon 2.1, including:
<ul>
<li><a href="http://nick.typepad.com/blog/2006/10/newspapers_21.html" class="bluelink">Pagination</a> in the newspaper view.</li>
<li><a href="http://nick.typepad.com/blog/2006/08/spyder_spots_a_.html" class="bluelink"> Popular Topics </a>feature which shows the most frequently linked articles across your subscriptions.</li>
<li>Redesigned subscription search</li>
<p><a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/typepad/post-img/paginate2.png" class="bluelink">Keyword highlighting </a>in watches and subscription search results.
<li><a href="http://nick.typepad.com/blog/2006/09/feed_security_a.html" class="bluelink">Security lockdown </a>- FeedDemon now completely disables scripting in its newspaper view, which means that even if an attacker finds a way to inject script into a feed in a way that circumvents FeedDemon&#8217;s &#8220;cleansing&#8221; of feed content, the script still won&#8217;t be able to execute.</li>
<li> Integration with <a href="http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/" class="bluelink">Windows Live Writer</a>.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/typepad/post-img/youtube3.png" class="bluelink">YouTube Video Search </a>added to keyword searches in subscription wizard.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/typepad/post-img/paginate3.png" class="bluelink">Thumbnail images </a>next to posts when summaries (excerpts) are displayed.</li>
<p>As always, please keep in mind that this is a beta version, so I don&#8217;t recommend downloading it unless you&#8217;re comfortable using unfinished software. If you do download the beta and run into any problems with it, please let us know by posting in the <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/FORUM/Forum48-1.aspx" class="bluelink">FeedDemon 2.1 Beta Forum</a>.</p>
<p>Note: This is a minor update from Beta 2, which was released earlier this week but never announced here. Please see <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/FORUM/Topic21799-48-1.aspx" class="bluelink">this forum post </a>for a list of changes since Beta 2.</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Another entrant into the RSS reader market, from Microsoft &#8211; <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/max/index.html" class="bluelink">Microsoft Max</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s actually a tool primarily intended for photo sharing:<br />
<blockquote>[] Max lets you make beautiful photo slideshows to share with your family and friends. You can also use the newsreader to keep up with the latest news updates from around the world.</p></blockquote>
<p>The pics in the screenshot gallery show a very nice-looking application indeed.</p>
<p>Will I try it? Probably not, or at least not until a final release comes out. This is a beta and it requires <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework" class="bluelink">.NET Framework</a> 3.0 RC1 (ie, pre release) installed. I have some apps on my PC that need .NET Framework version 2 which I have installed and I don&#8217;t know if 3 RC1 will mess up how those apps work. Erring on the side of caution, therefore.</p>
<p>Plus I&#8217;m happy with using tools like <a href="http://www.flickr.com/" class="bluelink">Flickr</a> for photo sharing and <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/NGOLProduct.aspx?ProdID=FeedDemon" class="bluelink">FeedDemon</a> for my RSS reader. So this isn&#8217;t compelling enough for me for either use.</p>
<p>Good <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/09/09/microsoft-launches-desktop-feed-reader/" class="bluelink">review at TechCrunch</a>. And check out the 75+ comments and trackbacks there.</p>
<p>Max&#8217; full name is Microsoft Codename Max, a name that does not trip off the tongue lightly. What is it with Microsoft and <a href="http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,1963466,00.asp" class="bluelink">poor product naming choices</a>? Don&#8217;t even think about <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob" class="bluelink">Bob</a>.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no doubt that subscribing to someone&#8217;s blog or website via <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)" class="bluelink">RSS</a> in order to automatically receive their content each time their site is updated is a convenient way to stay on top of the latest information.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nevillehobson.com/connections/subscription-options/" class="bluelink"><img src="http://img.webpronews.com/webpronews/rss-choices.gif" align="left" border="0"></a>No manually going to a site to check if there is new stuff. </p>
<p>Instead, it comes to you automatically in your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aggregator" class="bluelink">RSS aggregator</a>, either directly in your computer or to your preferred online service (or both if you use the latest version of <a href="http://www.feeddemon.com/" class="bluelink">FeedDemon</a>). </p>
<p>Recently I added some <a href="http://www.nevillehobson.com/connections/subscription-options/" class="bluelink">additional RSS subscription options</a> to this blog, something I&#8217;ve been meaning to do for a while. What that means is that if you use services like <a href="http://www.bloglines.com/" class="bluelink">Bloglines</a>, <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/" class="bluelink">NewsGator</a>, <a href="http://my.yahoo.com/" class="bluelink">My Yahoo</a>, <a href="http://my.aol.com/" class="bluelink">My AOL</a>, etc, you can now subscribe to this blog&#8217;s RSS feed through your preferred service. </p>
<p>But some people like to receive blog updates via email. A long-established service for that is <a href="http://www.feedblitz.com/" class="bluelink">FeedBlitz</a>. I&#8217;ve never offered that option (can&#8217;t think why not, actually) even though two readers recently told me they would prefer to get my posts in their inboxes. </p>
<p>Well, now you can <a href="http://www.nevillehobson.com/connections/subscription-options/#Email" class="bluelink">subscribe by email</a>. </p>
<p>RSS feed management company <a href="http://www.feedburner.com/" class="bluelink">FeedBurner</a> has just introduced a useful new service where you can <a href="http://www.burningdoor.com/feedburner/archives/001793.html" class="bluelink">subscribe to blog posts by email</a>. I&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.nevillehobson.com/connections/subscription-options/#Email" class="bluelink">enabled that service on this blog</a>. </p>
<p>One of the great things about using FeedBurner to manage your subscriptions is that every different way you offer people to get your content &#8211; whether it&#8217;s via RSS or via email &#8211; that content comes from the same source: the core RSS feed that FeedBurner manages. So no juggling multiple RSS feeds which makes it very difficult indeed to see how many subscribers you actually have, an issue I had with my <a href="http://www.nevon.net/" class="bluelink">old blog</a>. </p>
<p>And one thing about the new FeedBurner service &#8211; if you already have FeedBlitz or <a href="http://www.squeet.com/" class="bluelink">Squeet</a> enabled via FeedBurner, you&#8217;ll need to de-activate it in order to even see the FeedBurner email option in the Publicize&#8217; tab in your feed account settings. </p>
<p>Whichever subscription option you choose, thanks for subscribing. </p>
<p>[Edit] Naturally, I tried out the FB email service for myself and signed up to get my own posts by email. Mostly to see that it works ok. </p>
<p>It does, very nicely. HTML or plain-text options. I have HTML so see nice formatting plus images. I do like the email address it comes from: emailenfuego.net.&#8217; Heh! Spanish for email on fire&#8217; </p>
<p>Another good touch &#8211; in the footer of the email, you see this:</p>
<p><img src="http://img.webpronews.com/webpronews/fbemail.gif"><br />
Nice encouragement to sign up for the RSS subscription!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.newsgator.com/" class="bluelink">Newsgator</a> is on a roll lately. They are working on a series of upgrades to their terrific online product.</p>
<p>I have posted some sneak peek screenshots below. In addition, <a href="http://www.rassoc.com/gregr/weblog/" class="bluelink">The Kingdom of Greg</a> <a href="http://blogs.newsgator.com/daily/2006/03/the_product_for.html" class="bluelink">released</a> NewsGator Inbox, formerly NewsGator Outlook Edition, and a new <a href="http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/beta/" class="bluelink">beta of FeedDemon</a>. Full Inbox details are <a href="http://www.newsgator.com/forum/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=24&#038;MessageID=15056" class="bluelink">here</a>. Synchronization with IE7 is <a href="http://blogs.newsgator.com/daily/2006/03/newsgator_will_.html" class="bluelink">also forthcoming</a>. </p>
<p>What I love about Newsgator is that they sync across every OS. Read a feed item in one place and it won&#8217;t show up in the other. Now if only <a href="http://www.newsfirerss.com/" class="bluelink">Newsfire</a> supported the Newsgator sync API I&#8217;d be in RSS heaven.</p>
<p>Add to <script language='javascript'> document.write("<a href='http://del.icio.us/post?url="+encodeURIComponent(document.location.href)+"&#038;title="+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+" '>Del.icio.us</a>")</script> | <a href="javascript:void window.open('http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&#038;url='+encodeURIComponent(window.location.href)+'&#038;ei=UTF-8','popup','width=520px,h eight=420px,status=0,location=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,left=100,top=50',0)">Digg</a> | <a href="javascript:void window.open('http://myweb2.search.yahoo.com/myresults/bookmarklet?t='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+'&#038;u='+encodeURICompo nent(window.location.href)+'&#038;ei=UTF-8','popup','width=520px,height=420px,status=0,location=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,left=10 0,top=50',0)">Yahoo! My Web</a></p>
<p><a name="steve"></a><a href="http://www.micropersuasion.com">Steve Rubel</a> is a PR strategist with nearly 16 years of public relations, marketing, journalism and communications experience.
