During the early hours of the morning, Jon Burke, of Automattic made an announcement which looks to help certain WordPress users monetize from their blogs. The program is called WordAds, and is being implemented through a partnership with Federated Media.

The announcement not only introduced users to WordAds, but explained the timing and reason for it, “Over the years one of the most frequent requests on WordPress.com has been to allow bloggers to earn money from their blog through ads. We’ve resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn’t terribly tasteful, and it seemed like Google’s AdSense was the state-of-the-art, which was sad. You pour a lot of time and effort into your blog and you deserve better than AdSense.”

Ouch. Burke explains that there are over 50,000 WordPress blogs created everyday and their new advertising program will provide these users with a tasteful and effective option for advertising.

If you’d like to apply for the program, they’re accepting applications now. However, only certain sites will be accepted with a custom domain being a requirement. The selection process will be based on level of traffic, content, and language utilized on a blog. WordPress uses BoingBoing and Apple Insider as examples of sites which use Federated Media as an advertising partner.

A little over a month ago, Federated Media issued a press release concerning their partnership with Automattic, providing them an option to represent WordPress users through advertising.

Deanna Brown, CEO, Federated Media Publishing, said this at the time, “WordPress.com contributors epitomize the idea of passionate and influential publishers on the Independent Web. They have ardent followings and they present information in a very focused, conversational format, which is exactly the type of media offerings found in the rest of our existing portfolio. They really are an excellent fit for us.”

Twitter has been responding to the news, with most people focusing on Burke’s jab at Google’s Adsense:

It’s interesting that Burke would announce this as a rival to AdSense, considering the program looks to be exclusive and through a partnership with Federated Media. Judging from the ads provided on AppleInsider and BoingBoing, it seems as though there will be very few WordPress sites which would meet the standards set from the application process. Comparing this to the Adsense platform which is massive and represents a large number of sites seems a bit of a stretch at this point. As sites adopt the program, we’ll be able to see the potential it has to rival Google.

FM says TextDigger’s technology complements its own platform with semantic solutions for content tagging, filtering and clustering, that can help the company enhance the user experience, ad targeting, and semantic SEO for a site or network of sites.

"We’re proud to place TextDigger’s semantic profiling technology in FM’s hands," said Tim Musgrove, founder and CEO of TextDigger. "I’ve followed FM’s growth over the last few years and admire the company’s work. They have amassed a great team and a solid technology platform. I’m happy that our IP and our people will be integrated into such a wonderful company. This is a great strategic fit for all sides involved."

"FM’s home-grown technology platform is largely an untold story," said John Battelle, founder, chairman and CEO of Federated Media. "Over the past five years, our technology team has built an extraordinary platform that drives our business and keeps us on the edge of innovation in media. TextDigger provides us with a complementary technology that will build upon the work our team began back in 2005. Expect to hear more from FM with regard to media and marketing technology solutions."

Four "key" people from TextDigger including Musgrove, VP Engineering Robin Hiroko Walsh, Sr. Director of Product Management Peter Ridge, and Lead Software Engineer Jim Hull, are also joining the Federated Media team.

TextDigger will continue its own search business. Current Chief Business Development Officer will take over as CEO. TextDigger customers will continue to be supported by either FM or TextDigger, depending on their type of project or service. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been revealed.

Earlier this month, Bing began to return certain celebrities’ most recent tweets on its main results pages. Now, a side project has taken the real-time search integration much further, with BingTweets turning up all sorts of Twitter-related info together with a more standard set of search results.

BingTweets, which is in beta, is a result of a partnership between Bing, Federated Media, and Twitter. The most interesting thing about it is that users can see a constantly-growing list of tweets in which their query term features.

Trending topics are presented and sorted according to the categories of "Popular Now," "People," "Places," or "Products," too. And users can share their findings through any number of social media sites.

This makes for an informative, if busy-looking, layout. A post on the Bing Community Search Blog notes, "[W]hen Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince comes out . . . you may want to scan the official reviews, local theater listing, AND the latest Tweets on the movie to help you decide whether to rush to see it. With BingTweets, you can cover all that ground in one place."

It just remains to be seen if BingTweets will be a more popular way of finding traditional and real-time info than keeping Google open in one tab and Twitter Search open in another.

Update: ExecTweets is not the only thing Twitter is advertising. You can also see other ads for things like TwitterVision, Tweetie, etc. in the little box that previously only advertised Twitter services. Everything still looks to be at least Twitter-related at this point. And from the sound of it, they’re not making a money off of it.

Original Article: John Battelle and Federated Media has partnered with Microsoft to launch ExecTweets, a conversational marketing tool for businesses looking to sponsor a "topic-focused social media experience" with Twitter.

ExecTweets describes itself as a resource to help users find and follow the top business executives on Twitter. It’ll help you find people like Mark Zuckerberg, Jad Adelson, Craig Newmark, Don Dodge, Jonathan Schwartz, etc.

It’s not just people from the tech industry though. "In this case, we’re filtering for business-related content from senior execs in various industries, like retail, healthcare, government, and more, and we’ve created a platform for community conversation, voting, input, and recommendations," explains Battelle.

The service comes recommended from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone himself (though that might be because Twitter is <strike>getting some revenue out of it</strike> featuring it on their home page). "Twitter is contacted regularly by brands interested in sponsoring innovative experiences based on topics of interest," he says. "However, our focused commitment to Twitter itself means we don’t have much time or resources to build these interesting topical experiences. It turns out the folks over at Federated Media have both the resources and the expertise."

Battelle says that ExecTweets in its current state is only a first effort. They are already working on the next version.

Naturally, I’m going to have to mention that there’s another great tool for finding Twitterer’s of interest – Twellow from WebProNews. If you’re interested in more than just what top executives have to say, but other people in your industry as well, Twellow would be a great place to find people.

"A source close to the company says the bank will mainly be used to vet numerous incoming queries – not to solicit buyers or investors," reports Rafat Ali. "Another source, this one among the interested parties, says that FM is indeed looking to raise as much as $50 million, and the valuation is in the $125 million pre-money range."

The first scenario might make a little more sense, given the current market situation. A lot of VCs aren’t acting too nervous, though, so asking for money couldn’t hurt.

Owen Thomas introduces one more factor into the equation, writing, "Battelle’s choice of a banker is curious: Savvian is known for helping companies in dire straits."

So there’s quite a range of options, really, and we wouldn’t expect anything else on a slow Friday. Should one of the rumors solidify, though, we’ll be sure to provide updates.

The people behind the Boing Boing blog have updated the layout of the site, featuring more prominent positioning for rich media advertising.

"Welcome to the new Boing Boing!" Mark Frauenfelder wrote on the popular blog. Boing Boing has been one of the Internet’s most widely read blogs, as they add new items regularly to their "directory of wonderful things."

Since Federated Media head John Battelle has long been the "band manager" behind the blog, helping manage its numerous little graphic advertisements, we aren’t surprised to see his organization delivering more ads on Boing Boing. Text ads from FM’s server and the ubiquitous Google AdSense program appear alternately in the ad-dedicated right sidebar of the site.

Even better, an ad displayed by Google follows the no-holds-barred ethic of Boing Boing. As shown in the screenshot we caught, Google feels that "piercing nipples" would appeal greatly to the Boing Boing readership.

Thanks, Google! (click for full view)

The most distinct change comes in the top right side of the blog. It’s the area where people tend to look first, and a highly desirable place for websites of all kinds to place premium ads. Boing Boing is no exception, featuring a rich media ad for HP during out look.

We like the larger font size used by default with the redesign, but we will miss the classic look. Boing Boing emerged from its revamp with greater readability, and a sharper focus on monetization, but we’re sure the content will be as wonderful as always.

I’ve said it before: Sell out first. That way they expect it from you. Another blogstorm erupted last weekend over Federated Media’s involvement with Microsoft’s new "conversational marketing" idea.

These storms brew and recede from time to time. The weekend before last’s storm was about whether 30 was too geezer to think up anything good.

This time, it’s an ethics debate about whether or not John Battelle’s arrangement, whereby bloggers in the FM network answered the question "When did you know your business was People Ready?" on their blogs and, in return, Microsoft placed cost-per-click ads on the network.

Valleywag called them out, specifically Michael Arrington, Om Malik, Paull Kedrosky, Matt Marshall and Fred Wilson (who was in the eye of the last blogstorm), calling them "spokesbloggers."

And then, the blogosphere went ape.

Om Malik was quick to respond, apologizing and calling for FM to pull the ads:

I have requested Federated Media, our sales partners, suspend the campaign on our network of sites, and they have. We are turning off any such campaigns that might be running on our network. Would I participate in a similar campaign again? Nothing is worth gambling the readers’ trust.

John Battelle agreed:

Well, we certainly stepped in it….Microsoft was attempting something new, certainly something entirely new for the company, in any case – it was inviting authors into the marketing conversation. We tried to do it in a way that was transparent, that had integrity, where no editorial space was purchased.

Michael Arrington, though, was a bit more defiant:

So here’s my position on all of this: Go pound sand. People understand that if there’s text in an ad box, someone is paying for it to be there.

The main thing I’m pissed off about right now is that they pulled all the ads, which mean we’re taking a revenue hit. We’re running a business here, and have payroll to make. We run ads to make that payroll. Those ads have now been pulled.

For those of you that are too Midwest suburban, "pound sand" is explained at the Urban Dictionary, which won’t explain to Arrington’s employees why their paychecks bounced, or why it’s not really Valleywag’s fault.

Whichever side you take on the issue, Fake Steve Jobs opines about which side the bloggers took it (complete with illustrations):

He [Arrington] ends up sounding like a gal who’s trying to convince you that she’s not a "prostitute," she’s an "escort."

What makes this delicious is that these "spokesbloggers" are the same sanctimonious tw*ts who are constantly spouting bullsh*t about the glories of "citizen journalism" and patting themselves on the back and congratulating themselves for being so much more ethical and independent than the dreaded "Mainstream Media."

Ouch.

Battelle notes in his lengthy post at FM that he still thinks there is a future for conversational marketing, and some of the more objective (if there is such a thing) bloggers have noted that the whole scandal could have been avoided with full disclosure about the campaign.

An ad campaign featuring the black-clad shinobi behind the Ask A Ninja videos leads its viewers to special Ask.com Smart Answers and bonus ninja videos.

Federated Media has bridged the gap between searchers and ninjas for Ask.com. Their ninja-themed ads have been a draw for fans of the Ask A Ninja video blog.

A ClickZ report said the pairing of Ask.com with the Ninja crowd will continue through September. Ask.com appears as a sponsor in the pre-roll for the videos.

At the end of a clip, the ninja reads an ad while a search term is displayed on the screen. Going to Ask.com and searching for one of these special terms, like ningiants, brings up an Ask Smart Answer.

That is linked to a special bonus video created by the Ask A Ninja clan. The report said they created nine videos and search words for the campaign, which has run for a couple of weeks and lured 8.3 percent of Ask A Ninja’s viewers to Ask.com.

“There isn’t advertising that is able to drive that kind of response rate. But there certainly is opportunity around the ninja to drive that response rate around himself and his content,” Federated Media’s Chas Edwards, chief revenue officer, said in the report.

Once the ninja campaign has been completed, we have to wonder if Ask.com will do something with pirates after that.

Author of "The Search" and BoingBoing.net "band manager" John Battelle's Federated Media scooped up its first round of venture capital funding.

Author of “The Search” and BoingBoing.net “band manager” John Battelle’s Federated Media scooped up its first round of venture capital funding.

JP Morgan Partners led Federated Media’s (FM) first round of financing for a currently undisclosed amount. The firm joins such initial investors as The New York Times Company, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar’s Network, and techie book publisher Tim O’Reilly in backing Battelle’s venture.

A statement from FM described what the endeavor hopes to accomplish (besides making Hefty bags full of cash, natch):

<div style=margin-left:10px; margin-right:10px;>Federated Media represents “best of breed” independent publishing sites, with a focus on high quality authors catering to influential and highly engaged audiences. Through its advertising, technology, publishing, and business development services, FM connects independent weblog authors, marketers and influential audiences in an ongoing conversation that feeds everyone involved. The sites in FM’s network include BoingBoing.net, Buzzmachine.com, Digg.com, Dooce.com, Fark.com, GigaOm.com and more than 25 others.

The inclusion of Digg is notable, as the site has supported itself through placement of Google AdSense blocks throughout its pages. Those Google ads are still appearing on Digg, so their switchover to FM has not happened yet.

People can get a feel for the type of stories and writers in the new FM network by visiting its authors page and reading some of their work collected on a “best of” page.
