Fashion icons Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana face two years of jail time to the tune of $1.3 billion in taxes that weren’t declared.

The luxury fashion house sold their brand to Gado SRL, a holding company established by the designers; authorities believe Dolce and Gabbana did that to avoid paying taxes in Italy.

“They are the ones who profited most from the operation,” prosecutor Gateano Ruta said. “Gado was an artificial construction made for the tax advantage that was obtained.”

The designers maintain their innocence, however, and may appeal the charges to avoid an upcoming trial.

“To be accused of something untrue is not a beautiful thing. But in the end who cares, we will all finish up six feet under,” Gabbana said in a personal Twitter statement. “I am interested in making clothes and that’s all. They can do and say what they want.”

Google Glass is slowly working its way into the general public’s hands, as Google has begun the process of letting average people strap on the device for personal use. Googlers (especially Sergey Brin) can’t seem to find a time where they think it’s inappropriate to advertise Google Glass. The Project Glass wave is coming, but one big question remains.

Will people actually want to walk around all day wearing Google Glass? I mean, Google’s Eric Schmidt even had his doubts way back in 2010, saying, “I’m not sure you really want to walk through town with these odd glasses on, you know, looking like an airforce jetfighter or something,”

It looks like Google is very aware of this possible roadblock. In order to make the glasses a little more stylistically acceptable, Google is apparently in talks with Warby Parker, the online startup that sells affordable, trendy glasses and sunglasses. The New York Times cites two anonymous sources that say Google is looking to Warby Parker help make Google Glass a bit more fashionable.

Earlier this week, Google opened up a contest of sorts that allows people to plead their cases on why they should be one of the first people in the world to get a pair for personal use. Google asks that interested parties apply via Twitter or Google+ with the hashtag #ifihadglass. It must be a short application (50 words or less) and can contain photos and even a short video. If selected, applicants will receive an invitation to become a “Google Glass Explorer” and will be given the privilege of pre-ordering the new smart glasses for $1,500.

Google also unveiled an impressive new Google Glass video called “How It Feels [through Glass],” which features POV shots of the various uses of Google Glass.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced a new partnership with Cleveland apparel manufacturer Wahconah Group. The companies will create the “Rain Heat & Snow” line of apparel and “accessory products.”

The clothes will be designed around the unofficial USPS creed, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The clothing will feature USPS branding and could include some sort of “smart apparel” electronic devices.

“This agreement will put the Postal Service on the cutting edge of functional fashion,” said Steven Mills, USPS Corporate Licensing Manager. “The main focus will be to produce Rain Heat & Snow apparel and accessories using technology to create ‘smart apparel’ – also known as wearable electronics.”

This announcement comes soon after the USPS announced a net loss of $1.3 billion during the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year. As a result of that announcement, the company has planned to use a congressional loophole to end Saturday mail delivery on August 5. USPS estimates that cutting Saturday mail delivery could save as much as $2 billion each year. Though that may be enough to help the Postal Service limp through another year of declining First-Class Mail volume and government-mandated pre-funding of retiree health benefits, it seems that the company is now looking for outside-the-box solutions (such as fashion) to its money woes.

Since Google first unveiled Google Glass, many have wondered if people will buy into the device, simply from the fashion perspective. In other words, will people be worried about looking ridiculous in order to use these hi-tech smart devices that could potentially enrich the physical world around them?

Well, that’s probably why Google Glass has already been featured in a fashion show. Good thinking, Google.

I was watching this Eric Schmidt interview from 2010 (to find out how out of context Schimdt’s comments were with regard to their use in a new Microsoft commercial). Schmidt also happened to touch on what would eventually become Google Glass (you can start about 16 minutes in). Remember, this video is from nearly two years before Google unveiled the project.

It seems as though the fashion obstacle has been one Google has been considering for quite some time.

“I’m not sure you really want to walk through town with these odd glasses on, you know, looking like an airforce jetfighter or something,” Schmidt says, adding, “But I’m sure people will. I mean, as I was driving by here, I saw people riding their Segways, you know, looking like normal pedestrians.”

This guy doesn’t seem to mind the look:

Granted, I wouldn’t say he quite looks like a jetfighter.

It’s funny, because now that Google Glass is being spotted out in the wild, this is becoming an actual conversation, and an important issue that Google is going to have to deal with if it’s really serious about Project Glass leading to something meaningful for the company.

Last week, The Atlantic ran an article about a bar owner, who said this on Facebook:

Last night around 9:45 two people walked into the bar. Looked me square in the eye, and acting as if everything was normal they ordered beers.. Oh did I mention they were wearing Google Glasses! In public! In A BAR!

The point of Google Glass is that it’s supposed to enhance your world by bringing the digital to the physical. That means wearing the device pretty much everywhere you would carry your smartphone. That means bars. That means restaurants (I wonder what the anti-Instagram restaurants will think of that). That means subways.

Of course, it’s very possible (and perhaps likely) that this whole endeavor will lead to a contact lens version. When that happens (and if people are willing to physically attach these devices to their eyeballs), Google may just have that problem solved.

If it doesn’t happen, there’s always the smart watch (or maybe the brain implant discussed earlier in the Schmidt video).

[Sergey Brin image: Noah Zerkin]

I don’t think anybody would normally associate 3D printing with fashion. One Dutch fashion designer did, however, and the results are pretty fabulous.

Objet released a video interview today with Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen and MIT Professor Neri Oxman, both of which worked on a multi-material 3D printed cape and skirt. The ensemble was composed of “both rubber-like and rigid elements that are 3D printed simultaneously on the Stratasys Objet Connex system.”

The Objet blog gives some more insight into how the cape and skirt were created:

Both the cape and skirt were 3D printed on the Objet Connex500 multi-material 3D printer. They pieces were divided into 4 parts each, with each part consisting of a flexible rubber-like substrate overlaid with rigid shell-like structures – all printed in the same job. The Connex platform is unique in its ability to simultaneously use different materials for the fabrication and simulation of different end parts and properties.

3D printed clothing doesn’t look very comfortable, but I assume most high fashion isn’t meant to be. The design itself, however, is incredibly compelling, and might lead other fashion designers to look into the technology for future designs.

Google recently had models at the DVF show in New York wear Project Glass on the runway. It was interesting to see Project Glass being used to make a fashion statement even if they aren’t exactly fashionable yet. It does, however, give us a first-person glimpse into what goes into making a successful fashion show.

The pictures taken with Project Glass were already posted to the team’s Google Plus profile earlier this week, but we now have a special video that cuts all the footage taken during the festivities into a mini-documentary of sorts.

The best thing that I took out of this was being able to see what it’s like to walk down the runway. The true potential of Project Glass is being able to see out of the eyes of someone else for the first time. We have simulated point-of-view shots, but Project Glass provides the real deal.

Google’s Project Glass has now shown us a first-person perspective on extreme sports and fashion shows. I wonder what we’re going to get next? I would personally love to see Google tackle spelunking. It would be amazing to see a first-person account of the claustrophobic hobby. The Descent has ruined me on cave exploration for life, but Project Glass has the potential to show us the world from a unique perspective.

A bikini onesie that’s currently on-sale at Gordman’s department store in Mississippi has outraged area parents, many of whom feel this sort of clothing does nothing more than sexualize children. The piece in question, which was designed for children up to 18 months, features an image of a curvy body sporting a bikini positioned on a white background. It’s not unlike the goofy adult-oriented T-shirts anyone can purchase at various novelty shops online. Although it’s kind of amusing when grown-ups feel the need to cover their body with this sort of silliness, the whole scenario darkens considerably when you place it on a baby.

According to the Gordman’s website, the company states that it currently provideds “trusted products that meet the standards of discerning parents everywhere with our unique blend of quality style and value. We’re constantly working to create fresh, new products that reflect the ever-changing experiences and lifestyles of babies and their families.”

Of course, many parents who spotted the offending onesie weren’t too thrilled with the idea of seeing a baby sporting attire with a curvy female body plastered across the front. In fact, some even claimed that they would take great offense if they encountered parents who allowed their child to wear such a thing.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate for a small child,” Cathryn McKee explained to Action News 5. “I just think that is a little ridiculous that you would put that on your child.”

Neither Gordman’s nor the onesie’s manufacturer, Bon Bebe, has commented on the controversy.

The Olsen Twins’ fur backpack — which, I might add, is not the title for some sort of extremely unflattering underground porno — has caught the irritable eye of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Not surprisingly, the organization is none too pleased about the former “Full House” stars and their furry little fashion accessory.

The offending bag was designed for their luxury fashion line “The row”, and retails for roughly $17,000. The item is apparently covered in patches of fur, which has forced PETA to toss some pretty strong words in the duo’s general direction. Here’s hoping they have their thick alligator skins on today, because chances are they’ll need it.

“What the Olsens lack in creativity, they try to make up for in shock value,” a representative reportedly told E! Online. “Sadly, it’s the foxes, calves, and alligators — who often have the fur ripped off them while they are still conscious and able to feel pain — who pay the dearest price.”

However, despite all of the criticism Olsen Twins and their animal-unfriendly backpack have received from the group, celebrity stick figure Rachel Zoe had nothing but positive things to say about the piece. In fact, if you tossed “a blush blouse, skinny jeans and a bold boot” into the mix, you might be mistaken for someone with class. Assuming, of course, you have $17,000 just lying around to throw at a furry backpack.

In a final, almost pathetic stab at the designers, PETA said, “If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it’s probably a Trollsen Twin”. Considering the girls were recently named Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, there’s a very strong possibility that they don’t care what PETA thinks.

Hey, I’m just glad they didn’t win a Grammy.

If you’ve ever bemoaned the fact that you have to dig down in your skinny jeans pocket to retrieve your smartphone, or, if you’re a virgin and strongly wish to remain that way, it appears that your fall wardrobe has already been partially set.

That’s because the folks over at Alphyn Industries are now offering the DELTA415 Wearcom Jeans. These pants feature a straight leg cut and premium coated denim for a “deep indigo color.” Oh yeah, they also have a see-through pocket on the right leg to house your smartphone.

From the product site:

The patented Wearcom pocket is made of durable polymer film to allow for complete interactivity with any touch screen device. A button hole above the genuine leather film edge opens into the front pocket for threading headphones/mic wire into right pant pocket.

Apparently, the pants were inspired by fighter pilots’ G-suits, who are notorious for having to check Facebook every few minutes. The see-through pocket fits any touchscreen device up to 3×5 inches – so iPhones, iPods, Droids, and many more.

So, here’s what you’ll look like browsing Instagram through your pocket:

And a closer view:

The jeans will run you $160 and if you’re bigger than a 38 waist, you need not apply.

Maybe I’m being a bit hard on the DELTA415s. I mean, getting your smartphone out of your pocket can definitely be a bitch, especially if you’re rocking something with a 4.5-inch screen. But there’s gotta be a better way. Right?

Shopping for pants is hard. I know that by watching my female friends spend hours in clothing stores only to walk out with a single pair of pants. I myself am too terrified to even shop for pants as I’m pretty sure my waistline grows three sizes each day thus making my search for size 38 pants already obsolete. If only there was an easier way to find the perfect pair of pants…

The use of ellipsis was meant to imply that, yes, there is an easier way. That easier way comes from Kinect, the camera peripheral that powers your not-so-favorite Xbox 360 games. Besides being a dragon shout simulator, the Kinect is also used in a lot of market applications. It’s so awesome that Microsoft even funded numerous teams as part of the Kinect Accelerator to apply the technology to various fields.

Today’s field is fashion, hence the aforementioned pants struggles. The absolute worst part of shopping for clothes is trying them on. Bodymetrics has found an elegant solution through the use of Kinect that scans your body and lets you know what clothes will fit you. It even lets you try on the clothes digitally to let you know how they look.

Sure, some people love that feeling of walking into a store and spending hours trying to find the perfect pair of jeans. I, on the other hand, want nothing more than to walk in and walk out with a pair of jeans that is guaranteed to fit me. That’s what Bodymetrics does with the Kinect and it’s awesome. I’m sure plenty of men (and women) would agree with me that the time saved clothes shopping could be better applied elsewhere.

Check out the video below to see how Bodymetrics is using Kinect to power the future of clothes fitting. Here’s hoping this technology makes it into clothing stores soon so I no longer have to suffer the indignity of accidentally walking into the women’s changing room. Well, they could visibly label changing rooms, but the Kinect idea is better.
