Shopping online the day after Christmas is becoming a family holiday tradition, says Nielsen//NetRatings. Overall visits to Internet shopping sites that day jumped 35 percent over last year, adding eight million more people to the virtual elbowing party.

On the first Not-Christmas-Anymore Day of the season, 28.1 million people piled into eBay, Amazon, and Wal-Mart.com to redeem gift cards, peruse after-Christmas sales for clearance candy canes. . .or to sell that stupid pink bunny suit Aunt Clara got them.

Nielsen//NetRatings says:

Online shopping has become a part of the holidays themselves, with 24 percent more unique visitors to the Index on Thanksgiving and 29 percent more on Christmas day than last year. Many people are taking advantage of their holiday time off to go online and shop while brick and mortar stores are closed, which means online shopping may soon take its place among the American holiday traditions of eating and spending time with friends and family.

The biggest single day for shopping was December 12th, with 30.4 million unique visitors. eBay was the champ that day, pulling in 12.4 million people, followed by Amazon with 6.1 million, and Wal-Mart.com with 4.0 million. But the biggest week was a bit earlier, the week ending December 3rd.

Lego, Macy’s and Office Depot cleaned house this year, growing fastest year-over-year, with Web traffic increasing 120, 70, and 64 percent respectively.

Visits to shopping comparison sites peaked the week after Thankgiving, with traffic going as high as Dad’s cholesterol, jumping by 75 percent from the start of the season to a total of 64 million shopping trips. Those shopping comparison numbers dropped considerably by the time Christmas Eve rolled around, down to just 46.1 million.

Tis the season for metrics. The companies that keep tabs on the Internet have released a flurry of statistics over the past couple of weeks, all of them with the same conclusion: e-commerce is growing still. Nielsen//NetRatings’ Holiday eShopping index put on a few pounds, expanding by 20 percent year-over-year.

eShopping visits have gone from 469 million for the week ending December 10, 2005, to 563 million in 2006.

Cool stuff again rules the register: Toys/Video Games top the product category gainers list, growing by 49 percent with the help of Sony and Nintendo; Books/Music/Videos are close behind, increasing by 46 percent; and Consumer Electronics shoots up by 27 percent.

The online holiday marketing parade is led by eBay, pulling 34.2 million unique visitors for the week. Amazon follows with 25 million visitors, and Wal-Mart hits third place with 13.9 million. Target (9.8 million) and Overstock.com (7.6 million) round out the top five.

But it’s not only the heavy hitters that are growing. Shopping comparison site MySimon was the fastest growing online shopping destination, growing by 124 percent, increasing from 367,000 visitors to 822,000 visitors.

Warehouse CD and DVD company Columbia House jumped from 1.2 million unique visitors to 2.7 million, a gain of 118 percent. 1800flowers.com nearly doubled its traffic, ballooning from 472,000 visitors to 933,000.

People are also turning online for winter travel plans, and for ordering in to help alleviate some of the holiday cooking hassles. Nielsen says Web traffic to ChoiceHotels.com spiked by 76 percent year over year, increasing from 377,000 visitors to 663,00.

Schwan’s Home Service, a service that delivers frozen prepared meals to homes, also grew by 76 percent, upping its visitors from 224,000 to 390,000.

As expected, shopping online continues to rise year over year, up four percent in total. Nielsen//NetRatings reports that from the end of October this year through the first week of December, the metrics company’s Holiday eShopping Index grew by 43 percent.

Cyber Monday, when measuring work-traffic only, brings the most people online – 16.1 million, to be exact, an increase of seven percent from last year.

For combined home and work traffic, Cyber Monday, also as expected, has not been our best day, traffic-wise. During the aforementioned timeframe, the biggest eshopping day was Wednesday, November 29th. Thirty million people, an increase of 18 percent over last year, took to the cyber streets in search of deliverable goods.

From home, eshoppers were out in force on Cyber Sunday (why not call it that?), the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the day before Cyber Monday. Twenty million home-gamers poured onto the Net that day, an increase of 20 percent.

The fastest growing category in the market, says Nielsen, is Toys/Video Games, jumping 129 percent since the end of October. In second place is Consumer Electronics, rising 101 percent, then Jewelry, increasing 76 percent.
