Last night’s Emmys were a mix of surprises and expected results as a few notable actors walked away with their first emmys and a couple of powerhouse shows maintained their place at the top.

The biggest surprise of the night might have been Friday Night Light‘s star Kyle Chandler winning the award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role as Coach Taylor on the critically-acclaimed show. Peter Dinklage also grabbed an Emmy for his work on the HBO hit Game of Thrones.

The two shows that won the night’s big awards, Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series have won the award for several years in a row. Both Mad Men and Modern Family winning the statues was no surprise to anyone. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart also won again for Variety, Musical or Comedy Series – making it 9 years in a row.

It was a huge night for Modern Family, as the show recorded wins for not only Outstanding Comedy Series, but for Supporting Actress (Julie Bowen), Supporting Actor (Ty Burrell), Directing (Michael Spiller) and Writing (Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman). Here are some reactions from the winners –

Performance marketing agency Performics recognizes this, and has developed a “Primtetime Emmy Online Comedy Index” to look at all the buzz surrounding the nominees. The theory is that social media buzz and the volume of Google searches can accurately predict who will win the awards on Sunday night.

If they are right, it looks like it’s going to be a good night for NBC comedy.

According to the social metrics, The Office should win the award for Outstanding Comedy Series and Alec Baldwin should win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on 30 Rock.

The Office leads both Google searches and total tweets when it comes to the nominees. Coming in a close second in terms of Twitter buzz is Fox mega-hit Glee. After that, the other nomiees drop off quite significantly.

As far as Outstanding Actor goes, Alec Baldwin leads in searches by a significant margin over Louis C.K. and Steve Carell. I’m going to hope that this doesn’t signify the outcome, as it would be a travesty for anyone but Louis C.K. to win (just my opinion).

When it comes to the Outstanding Lead Actress award, Parks & Recreation‘s Amy Poehler and 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey are virtually tied for the top spot, according to Performics.

“The court of public opinion may not decide award winners, yet people continue to embrace social media and search engines in new and creative ways,” said Daina Middleton, CEO of Performics. “Fans, networks and countless others are participating with and expressing interest in their favorite nominees. We’ve put some of Performics’ analytic muscle behind the comedy categories to assess who’s hot, who’s not and who might just get the last laugh.”

Can social chatter really predict the winners? Startup Likester famously used their analyzation of Facebook likes to correctly predict most rounds of American Idol, including Scotty McCreery as the winner. But of course, American Idol picks its winner based on fan votes. The Emmys use that stuffy academy – just ask Sons of Anarchy’s Kurt Sutter how he feels about that deciding body.

This year, in the Best Drama category we have the HBO series’ Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. We also have Showtime’s Dexter and AMC’s Mad Men. Rounding out the group is the NBC turned DirecTV hit Friday Night Lights.

Absent from that list is FX’s Sons of Anarchy. And in my opinion it is definitely an injustice that Sons‘ unbelievably great season wasn’t valued higher than the meh season that Mad Men threw our way.

Another snub of Sons of Anarchy, according to many, is the lack of Katey Sagal’s name in the Lead Actress category. Even more than the show getting left out of the Best Drama category, this is truly an injustice. Sagal’s Gemma Teller doesn’t just hold the show together, she’s brilliant.

The show’s creator Kurt Sutter was a little miffed by the Emmy noms yesterday, and took to Twitter to express his feelings. What followed was a hilarious, quite NSFW rant that spanned almost 20 tweets. Seriously, it’s great. Here’s how he started it –

When the Daytime Emmys air, six programs will compete for the first Emmy award for “original entertainment programming created specifically for nontraditional viewing platforms.”

TVWeek reported how the new Emmy shall be a regular category. Program creators demonstrated strong interest, with Peter Price, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, calling the response to a call for entries “phenomenal”:

The spread of nominees run the gamut from major media companies like News Corp, Viacom, and Time Warner, to far lesser-known producers.

That should encourage even more people to take advantage of digital tools and try for Emmy recognition too.
