The harmless little StumbleUpon button in the web browser makes it so easy to wander through the recommended sites of the plugin’s users that time stumbles past in rapid blocks. Giving a thumb’s up today means more than just a positive vote.

StumbleUpon agreed to donate funds to plant trees when its members give a thumbs-up to the special page they set up for Earth Day. Former New York Giants running back turned media personality Tiki Barber is also taking part in the Thumbs Up for Trees effort.

Flock brought out the economically sensitive version of its browser today. The Eco-Edition of Flock will put some of the company’s revenue into the environment.

Ten percent of the search proceeds generated by users of the Flock Eco-Edition browser will be donated to the environmental charity of the Flock community’s choice at the end of 2008. This special edition of the browser includes added environmentally-related content to the features already in Flock.

Speaking of green, Yahoo discloses their financial results today. But the company is also known for supporting green environmental causes; more information on that at Yahoo Green’s Earth Day 2008 site.

Through a special website hosted at Yahoo, visitors can pledge to take energy-saving measures that may help improve the quality of life on Earth.

If you have considered switching to compact fluorescent bulbs for lamps in the home, or simply turning off the computer when it’s not going to be used for several hours (yes, there are people who do that), Yahoo wants people to pledge to practice those habits at its Earth Day website.

“We are hopeful that Yahoo!’s Earth Day campaign will illustrate that if we act as a global community, together we can make a difference,” Meg Garlinghouse, director of Yahoo! For Good, the company’s community relations initiative, said in a statement.

The website makes use of several Yahoo services in conjunction with its Earth Day observation. Yahoo Answers lets users view and answer climate change and Earth Day questions; each “best” answer receives a chance to win a free trip to this summer’s World Cup in Germany.

The site’s popular Flickr photo sharing site will have a collection of Earth Day-related images on view and available for comment. For those who have avatars associated with their Yahoo accounts, the avatars can be “dressed” in Earth Day t-shirts for the occasion.

At press time, Yahoo users have made 16,888 pledges to adopt one or more of the energy-saving methods recommended by Yahoo. The choice to have names removed from paper-using mailing lists like catalogs has been the leading gatherer of pledges, with pledges to turn off computers close behind it.

Saturday, April 22nd is Earth Day, the 26th observed since its 1970 debut. More information about the holiday can be found at the Earth Day Network website.

Recycling, global warming, and endangered species topped the list of environmentally related queries being queried on AOL Search.

With Al Gore’s favorite holiday, Earth Day, approaching on Saturday, April 22nd, environmentalists have been driving their SUVs to pick up their kids from school, along with their Earth Day related homework. Quite a few of them may be using AOL Search to dig up more information about issues facing Planet Earth.

As consumer gas prices again touch the $3 per gallon mark in the US, interest in solar power and hybrid autos ranked fourth and fifth among AOL Search users, behind the top three mentioned earlier. Wind power (15) found interest as well, as people wanted to find out just what options could be available to offset the continued rise of oil prices.

Various types of pollution appeared throughout the list of queries (ranked 6, 11, and 16) for the period from April 1-15; searchers were also curious about the impact of oil spills (18) on the environment.

Concerns about radon (8), pesticides (12), acid rain (13), asbestos (17), and lead poisoning (20) contributed to a few nightmares, as users sought out more information on those environmental scourges. People also wanted to learn more about composting (7), wetlands (9), coral reefs (10), drinking water (14), and watersheds (19).

More information about Earth Day may be found on its website. The Earth Day Network plans to launch a three-year “Climate Change Campaign” to educate people about making climate change a priority for consumers, businesses, and governments.
