Commercials are the highlight of the Super Bowl; it’s that comic relief from the unbearable tension of the high stakes football game. From naughty body painting commercials to talking heads sprouting from a body, this year’s game had many hilarious and notable spots.

According to USA Today, advertising tracking website AdMeter.co.uk announced a line-up best commercials based on their data.

With many of the funniest spots making the list, the top spot, however, belongs to a very talented baby and his (or her) annoyed grandmother.

In the commercial a young boy proceeds to taunt the the grandma and innocent baby with a bag of Doritos from across the way in the safety of his club house. The grandmother, sick of the boy’s dastardly teasing, decides to make use of the baby’s bouncy swing. She then takes up the child, throws her power wheelchair in reverse and launches the baby across the yard. The whipper snapper nabs the bag from the hands of the surprised boy then returns safely to the porch to enjoy the snack with grandma.

In 2007 Doritos decided to start crowd-sourcing their Super Bowl ads. Their Crash the Super Bowl contest allowed fans to make and submit their own Doritos commercials, with the winner airing during the Big Game. The result has been some of the funniest Super Bowl ads around. This year, however, there are more than a few people who are upset with how the voting has gone. It seems that a video promising to teach viewers to make their own Doritos did not make the cut. Now some people are trying to get Doritos to reconsider the decision. Check out the video below and see what you think.

A viral video is one that becomes popular though the process of Internet sharing, via social media, sharing sites, or good ‘ole email. Everyday we highlight some of the best that are currently viral and some that are trending that way.

Today’s videos feature an awesome Doritos commercial that never graced the television, a gruesome marketing video from Capcom, a six man basketball squad, and a blind man cooking.

As most have been saying upon viewing this video, how did it not win the user-made Superbowl commercial contest last year? It has Unicorn tears.

What I love about this video is watching it with someone who has no idea what it’s from. Kudos, Capcom. Now that’s how you market a product. (It’s a viral vid for their upcoming game, Resident Evil: Revelations)

While there are many aspects of the video which should make you laugh, my eyes couldn’t leave his “According to Jim” t-shirt.

I don’t have anything clever or smarmy to say…it’s SPACEKISSER.

An extremely well made music video, which should leave you amazed at the end. If you’re not amazed, then re-watch.

Youth Lagoon – July from Tyler T Williams on Vimeo.

The video creator visited 17 countries in 343 days, and took 6,237 photographs. The results are beautiful, and completely surreal.

Time is Nothing // Around The World Time Lapse from Kien Lam on Vimeo.

I’m going to go ahead and make the call that this trailer will be better than the Oscars itself.

Now this is how you have a food fight to start the new year. The best part, it took place in Canada.

This strategy should be adopted by all basketball teams, just put six people on the court. No one will notice. As a sad side note, the losing coach lost his job the next day.

I thought these interrogation tactics were illegal under the Geneva code. You know, for being so adorable it hurts.

I really hope the tagline for this movie is “This year, the processing fees won’t be the only thing that kills you“

This one’s for all the people who are still trying to cope with the fact that the Harry Potter movie series is over. I’m sure these people have advice for you.

A pretty cool blind man shows us how he is able to cook on a daily basis. Those George Foreman grills are no joke, I burn myself all the time and I have 20/20.

YouTube announced that the winner of its Ad Blitz contest is Chrysler, for its Super Bowl commercial, which featured Eminem driving around Detroit. The contest was based on viewer votes.

"It’s been about two weeks since the Super Bowl aired, but our ears are still ringing from the noise of advertisers jockeying for position in Ad Blitz, YouTube’s contest to find the best Super Bowl ad," said Suzie Reider, Display Advertising Director at YouTube.

"It was a great Super Bowl for mobile this year, with over 3.5 million views of the Ad Blitz channel happening on mobile devices," she said. "We received over 2.7 million votes, and in the first 30 hours after the game aired, commercials were viewed 47 million times."

At the Ad Blitz gallery on YouTube, you can see the top 5 videos, which came from Chrysler, Doritos, Bridgestone, Doritos (again), and Doritos (yet again).

So while Chrysler may have taken the cake, Doritos has to feel pretty good about getting three separate spots in the top five. Pretty impressive.

As WebProNews reported, Mullen and Radian6 partnered to launch BrandBowl2010, a Twitter/Super Bowl event that allowed users to see near real-time ratings of the Super Bowls commercials. The two companies have now released the results.

They determined that Doritos was the most effective brand to advertise during the Super Bowl, and that Budweiser Select55 was the least effective. The results were determined from 98,656 Tweets collected. The results from BrandBowl2010 were as follows:

The Top Ten Most Effective Brands on BrandBowl2010

1. Doritos
2. Google
3. Focus On Family
4. Snickers
5. Budweiser
6. Bud Light
7. Hyundai
8. Kia
9. GoDaddy
10. Coca-Cola

The Five Least Effective Brands on BrandBowl2010

1. Diamond Foods’ – Pop Secret
2. Honda
3. Teleflora
4. Michelob Ultra
5. Budweiser Select55

The top brands were judged on volume of tweets, and after the top three, the firms say there was a sharp drop-off. "Doritos won the title by virtue of dominating the sheer volume of tweets," the firms say. "That was enough to keep them ahead of Google, which had a higher percentage of positive tweets."

The BrandBowl site provided an overall ranking of the brands advertising on the game based on a composite score that takes into consideration both volume of tweets and sentiment (positive or negative).
Malibu asked for video entries, offered a $25k prize and even had Efren Ramirez of “Napoleon Dynamite” help with the judging.

Unfortunately, when the winner was declared, some entrants cried fowl, suggesting that contest was rigged.

One YouTube user even made a six-minute conspiracy theory video that compared images from a professional Malibu commercial promoting the contest with the winner?s video, saying in part: ?Wow, the same nose!? The same guy? You be the judge!?

?It just looks like, wow, they rigged the contest,? said Debbie Lusignan, 35, of Adams, Mass. ?I am furious. I spent 60 hours on this freaking contest.?

The winner and Malibu both deny any conspiracy, but as Techdirt points out, perception is often reality and so whether rigged or not, a question mark will forever hang of the legitimacy of the contest.

Yahoo’s first order of business after its acquisition of video site JumpCut is to invite users to create a Doritos commercial, similar to what Yahoo! did recently with their own promotion. The grand prize: $10,000 and a trip to Super Bowl XLI in Miami.

In a partnership with Frito-Lay, Yahoo is seeking user-generated advertising in the form of 30-second spots. In addition to the cash and the trip, the winning commercial will be broadcast during the Super Bowl broadcast – air time that runs advertisers about $2.5 million to reach an estimated 48 million people.

Doritos’ Crash The Superbowl campaign includes a few tools for would be directors to use. These include logo graphics, music, and sound effects. Assumedly, Doritos Girl Ali Landry is unavailable for video shoots.

Whether or not user-generated commercials are good for the viewer, the prize is certainly good for the creatorand cheap enough for the advertiser (TV commercials are expensive to produce).

Over at the WebProBlog, our own Chris Richardson muses about the development:

One thing the GooTube fall-out has brought is a growing awareness of online video and its ability to support advertising, which is logical progression considering Google is a marketing juggernaut as well as a search engine. The nature of video dictates these advertisements will be in the television commercial style, which leads to an idea – could online commercials become as popular (or annoying) as their television counterparts are?
