The making of a Twitter documentary was announced over two years ago. It’s called Twittamentary (fittingly), and now it’s set to begin screening in communities around the world.

The film’s director Siok Siok Tan tells WebProNews, “We have lots of exciting plans in 2012. We have just announced an open call for community screenings between February 1st and May 1st.”

“The first of the community screenings will roll out over Social Media Week in February,” she says. “We are screening in New York City on Feb 15th, London on Feb 17th and will be announcing more Social Media Week events in other locations soon. ”

Here are a few teasers for the documentary:

We first interviewed Tan here, where she explained the concept and process of making the film. The following year, we followed up with her, and it was getting a sneak preview in NYC. Now, many communities around the word should have a chance to see it.

Anyone can organize a screening for their community as long as they meet the guidelines discussed here.

You’ve probably heard that there is a Facebook movie in the works, but now it appears that there is a one on the way for Twitter as well. However, where the Facebook film will be a mainstream hollywood-type movie with actors, the Twitter movie will be a documentary, and will be available for free to watch online under a creative commons license.

According to a social media release, Siok Siok Tan of Singapore has begun working on the documentary, and is calling upon Twitter users to contribute story ideas, rich media, and videos.

"I want to make a film that peels away the hype and explores how lives connect and intersect, and then are affected and changed as result of encounters on Twitter," says Tan.

The release says that Siok Siok is a 12-time Asian TV Award winner, Taiwan Golden Bell recipient, former executive director for Discovery TV and an adjunct instructor at the famed Beijing Film Academy. She directed a film called Boomtown Beijing, which documents the lives of "ordinary Chinese" in the year leading up to the Beijing Olympics.

The Twitter documentary appears to be in the very early stages of development, so it’s hard to say just what all will be documented, but Twitter enthusiasts will be eager to catch a glimpse of, and possibly contribute to the end product. Tan can be found on Twitter at @sioksiok.

The film will air in the U.S. on HBO in 2009. It was shot in hi-def cinematic style.
