With the increasing costs of fuel prices, more than a third of U.S. technology workers say they would be willing to take a pay cut of up to 10 percent to avoid commuting to the office, according to a new survey released today.

The survey polled 1,500 technology workers and found that 37 percent would take a cut in pay if they could work from home, according to Dice Holdings, a Web site for technology and finance professionals.

That is a little higher than the number of workers who said "No way," saying the pay should not change unless the work changes, the survey found.

The average U.S. technology professional earns $74,570 per year, according to Dice. Around 7 percent of those workers currently telecommute, but those jobs are mainly limited to consulting companies.

"Since gas prices have been climbing, we haven’t heard of any company opening up the telecommuting doors to tech professionals specifically," Dice said.

Dice said giving employees the option of working from home can help companies retain technology specialists at a time when technology experts are in high demand.
