Flynn Robinson, an NBA guard in the 60s and 70s, has died at the age of 72.

According to a New York Times obituary, Robinson passed away after a battle with multiple myeloma. He died on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Robinson played college basketball at the University of Wyoming before being drafted in the second round of the 1965 NBA Draft by the Cincinnati Royals. He played for seven years in the NBA, never staying with one team for more than two consecutive seasons. He hopped around the country, playing for the Royals, the Chicago Bulls, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Baltimore Bullets.

Robinson was part of the legendary 1971-72 Lakers, which won the 1972 NBA Finals. The Lakers organization has issued a statement on the athlete’s passing, expressing condolences and calling him “a proud part of our Lakers heritage.”

“We are very sad to hear of the passing of Flynn Robinson,” said Jeanie Buss, Lakers EVP of business operations. “Flynn played an important role on the 1971-72 Lakers team that brought Los Angeles its first NBA Championship and won what is still an NBA-record 33 consecutive games. Lakers fans might remember him as ‘Mr. Instant Point,’ a nickname given to him by the great Chick Hearn, a nickname that was well earned as Flynn led the reserves in scoring that season, averaging 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench. He was a proud part of our Lakers heritage, participating in numerous reunions and special events over the years and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.”

Epy Guerrero, the famed MLB scout in the Dominican Republic who is credited with dozens of high-profile signings, has died. He was 71.

Guerrero began his career with the Houston Astros, where he famously signed Cesar Cedeno out of his home country.

“He was a good friend and great scout, great ambassador for baseball and a great evaluator of talent,” Smith said. “He and Pat Gillick were responsible for signing Cesar Cedeno, one of the finest players in the history of the franchise, and other players. Just a great person and a great baseball man. I’m really, really saddened to hear of his death,” said former Astros president Tal Smith.

Guerrero spent a large part of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-1995), and is credited with helping to load the franchise with great players in the 80′s and 90′s. He signed influential players like Tony Fernandez, Alfredo Griffin and Carlos Delgado. He also played a big part in the drafting of George Bell.

He served as a coach for the team in 1981.

On Thursday night, The Toronto Blue Jays held a moment of silence before their game with the Baltimore Orioles in honor of Guerrero.

In his illustrious career, Guerrero signed over 40 MLB players for four teams – the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers.

He was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Guerrero died in his birth city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The bodies of two West Point, Utah children, ages 4 and 10, were found in their home Wednesday night. According to a Davis County Sheriff’s Office statement, the brothers died from what appear to be knife wounds. The suspect in the murders is the victims’ 15-year-old brother.

The children’s mother found the the body of the 4-year-old on Wednesday evening. She called 911, and a police sweep of the home found the body of the 10-year-old. An hours-long search for the missing 15-year-old was then conducted. The boy was eventually found around midnight and taken to a local hospital.

On Thursday morning, “as a result of the emerging details,” the 15-year-old was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center. Police suspect that the boy acted alone, but have released no further details on the crime, which they are investigating as a homicide. The cause of the 4-year-old’s and 10-year-old’s death will be officially determined by medical examiners.

Trevor Bolder, English rock bassist and songwriter who is best known for his time with David Bowie’s The Spiders from Mars and progressive hard rock band Uriah Heep, has died of cancer. He was 62.

Bolder played with Bowie’s The Spiders from Mars across four studio albums: Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups. He also played with The Spiders From Mars with Mick Woodmansey and the late Mick Ronson on the subsequent Bowie tours. In 1976 Bolder joined Uriah Heep, replacing John Wetton.

“Trevor was a wonderful musician and a major inspiration for whichever band he was working with. But he was foremostly a tremendous guy, a great man,” said David Bowie.

Uriah Heep had this to say in a statement on their website:

It is with great sadness that Uriah Heep announce the passing of our friend the amazing Trevor Bolder, who has passed away after his long fight with cancer. Trevor was an all time great, one of the outstanding musicians of his generation, and one of the finest and most influential bass players that Britain ever produced.

His long time membership of Uriah Heep brought the band’s music, and Trevor’s virtuosity and enthusiasm, to hundreds of thousands of fans across the world. He joined the band in 1976 and, barring one short break, was a fixture until his ill health forced him to take a step back early this year.

Mick Box said, “Trevor was a ‘World Class’ bass player, singer & songwriter, and more importantly a World Class friend. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and rock fans all over the world. We are all numb to the core”.

“I had the great pleasure of knowing Trevor for the best part of 30 years, he was one of my idols growing up, I got to know him when Uriah Heep opened for DL on the Pyromania tour in 1983 and we became firm friends. I stayed with him, he stayed with me and we recorded and toured together as The Cybernauts. For myself & Phil it’s devastating because we were looking forward to finishing up some new Cybernauts recording pretty soon, that may now not happen, but our real thoughts right now are with his family. TB was one of the good guys, I’m sure Mick Box & the guys in Heep feel the same way, we have lost a brother, a great bass player, a funny, funny man who lit up any room he walked into. I guess now, him & Ronno have a bit of catching up to do…RIP my friend,” said Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot

Wayne F. Miller, the photographer best known for his portraits of black America in post-WWII Chicago, has died. He was 94.

Miller got his start studying banking at the University of Illinois at Urbana, only doing photography work on the side. He later studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles. As a lieutenant in the Navy, Miller took some of the iconic photos from the war. He was one of the first to photograph the aftermath at Hiroshima.

He is known for his work The Way of Life of the Northern Negro, which was later published in the book Chicago’s South Side, 1946-1948. He also worked on Dr. Benjamin Spock’s A Baby’s First Year.

Miller served as a contributor to international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos since 1958. Here’s what president Alex Majoli had to say about Miller’s passing:

“The first time I met Wayne Miller I was surprised to see a white man. Having known his legendary pictures of the Southside of Chicago for so long, I had always imagined the man to be black. He paved the ground for the rest of us who tried to depict the streets, the real life. He was a pioneer. Only recently, I learned that he served in the navy as a photographer in WWII, and then a contract photographer for LIFE. It might have seemed like golden years for photographers now, but he had to invent himself in many ways, a character trait I highly appreciate in people. With the utmost respect and great sorrow I have to say goodbye to a master I was so fortunate to meet, even if it was only on a few occasions.”

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Heinrich Rohrer has died at the age of 79.

According to a New York Times obituary, Rohrer died last Thursday night or Friday morning in Wollerau, Switzerland. His family has stated that he died of natural causes.

Rohrer studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology during the 1950s, where he studied superconductors. In 1963 he joined IBM, where he began working out of the company’s research laboratory in Rüschlikon, Switzerland.

In 1981 Rohrer and his colleague Gerd Binning unveiled the first-ever scanning tunneling microscope at an IBM research facility in Zürich. The technology enabled physicists to image individual atoms and other structures at the atomic level. For their discovery, Rohrer and Binning were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics, which they shared with German physicist Ernst Ruska, who designed the first electron microscope.

The scanning tunneling microscope has since been used for the study viruses, creating silicon chips, and many other applications. Its design has also been improved upon, allowing scientists to manipulate atoms and atomic structures. In addition to a large portion of modern atomic science, things such as IBM’s recently released “World’s Smallest Movie” would not have been possible without the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope.

Waber is probably best known for his books The House on East 88th Street and Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (including his many subsequent Lyle books).

Waber describes how he got into drawing in a biographical essay:

My own early efforts at drawing were mostly confined to the laborious copying of photographs of film stars and other celebrities of the day. I received respectable grades in art classes during my school years, but doubt I thought it seriously indicated a career direction. Perhaps art seemed too frivolous for one raised during the Depression. Besides, I grew up a rather earnest young man and chose instead to major in finance at the University of Pennsylvania. After just one year of schooling, World War II interrupted those rather high-minded plans. Perhaps it was moving about, meeting people of various backgrounds and experience – I don’t recall a precise moment – but somehow during those army days my interest shifted to drawing and painting.

“Waber’s warmth, energy, artfulness, elegance, and abiding respect for children were epitomized in his books,” said publisher Betsy Groban, SVP of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

“In one way or another, I seem to find myself thinking of children’s books most of the time. I even enjoy the period when I am between books, for it is then that I am (I hope) susceptible to all manner of adventurous thought,” said Waber.

It’s a given that animals are dangerous. While animals such as the Hippopotamus are known to be very dangerous, even seemingly harmless animals such as beavers can manage to kill a human.

This week, police in Hungary are investigating the violent death of an older man that involves animals not normally thought of as killers. The suspects? Two donkeys.

According to an Associated Press report, a 65-year-old man named Sandor Horvath died last week in Magyarszecsod, Hungary. Authorities say that the man was apparently pulled off his motorcycle by two donkeys and mauled to death. Horvath was reported to have been dragged for 50 meters while the animals bit and trampled him. Police are currently investigating the incident to work out exactly what happened. The results of the man’s autopsy have not been revealed.

The donkeys were reportedly being kept on land adjacent to Horvath’s farm. The animals have not yet been put down, and are being kept “under observation” while the investigation continues.

The estimated death toll for the giant tornado that ripped through Moore, Oklahoma on Monday was drastically lowered today. While earlier reports had at least 51 people dead, including 20 children, the numbers have been revised to 24 confirmed dead, including 9 children.

State officials announced this morning that fewer people had been killed than previously thought, with a spokesperson for the state medical examiner’s office saying in a news conference that some of the victims had been counted twice. While certainly no death toll could be considered a good thing, a reduced number of deaths is a bright spot in an otherwise ghastly ordeal.

Emergency personnel continue to search for victims, including two dozen missing children from an elementary school that was destroyed.

Google has launched a crisis map, providing resources for those affected by the storm.

Photos and videos of the tornado and its destruction have flooded social media, giving the whole world a glimpse of the terror that ripped through the area. Here, you can see a video of the storm forming in Newcastle, OK. In this one, a woman finds her missing dog in the rubble while being interviewed by CBS.
