Nobel Prize-winning physicist Heinrich Rohrer has died at the age of 79.

According to a New York Times obituary, Rohrer died last Thursday night or Friday morning in Wollerau, Switzerland. His family has stated that he died of natural causes.

Rohrer studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology during the 1950s, where he studied superconductors. In 1963 he joined IBM, where he began working out of the company’s research laboratory in Rüschlikon, Switzerland.

In 1981 Rohrer and his colleague Gerd Binning unveiled the first-ever scanning tunneling microscope at an IBM research facility in Zürich. The technology enabled physicists to image individual atoms and other structures at the atomic level. For their discovery, Rohrer and Binning were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics, which they shared with German physicist Ernst Ruska, who designed the first electron microscope.

The scanning tunneling microscope has since been used for the study viruses, creating silicon chips, and many other applications. Its design has also been improved upon, allowing scientists to manipulate atoms and atomic structures. In addition to a large portion of modern atomic science, things such as IBM’s recently released “World’s Smallest Movie” would not have been possible without the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope.

It’s a given that animals are dangerous. While animals such as the Hippopotamus are known to be very dangerous, even seemingly harmless animals such as beavers can manage to kill a human.

This week, police in Hungary are investigating the violent death of an older man that involves animals not normally thought of as killers. The suspects? Two donkeys.

According to an Associated Press report, a 65-year-old man named Sandor Horvath died last week in Magyarszecsod, Hungary. Authorities say that the man was apparently pulled off his motorcycle by two donkeys and mauled to death. Horvath was reported to have been dragged for 50 meters while the animals bit and trampled him. Police are currently investigating the incident to work out exactly what happened. The results of the man’s autopsy have not been revealed.

The donkeys were reportedly being kept on land adjacent to Horvath’s farm. The animals have not yet been put down, and are being kept “under observation” while the investigation continues.

Three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously ruled today that the U.S. government can keep death photos of Osama bin Laden secret. There are apparently over fifty of them.

Bin Laden was killed on May 2nd, 2011 and President Barack Obama revealed shortly thereafter that the death photos would not be released.

“The risks of release outweigh the benefits,” Obama said at the time. “Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East.”

“Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaida killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet,” he added. “Osama bin Laden is not a trophy – he is dead and let’s now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaida has been eliminated.”

In January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit heard oral arguments in the case, which stems from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request made by the group Judicial Watch. The group appealed the decision of a U.S. District court, which ruled that the images could harm national security. The group had said in a brief:

Specifically, Defendants have failed to provide any evidence that all 52 images, including those depicting bin Laden’s burial at sea, pertain to “foreign activities of the United States.” Defendants also have failed to provide any evidence that images depicting the burial at sea actually pertain to “intelligence activities.” Nor have they demonstrated that the release of images of a somber, dignified burial at sea reasonably could be expected to cause identifiable or describable exceptionally grave damage to national security.

The U.S. Justice department said there were obvious “sensitivities” with the situation, and that releasing the images could lead to violence against Americans.

Reuters reports that the court ruled today that the risk of violence is indeed a justification to keep the images classified.

There are some fakes out there, however, easily found with a Google image search.

William Fine, the publisher of dozens of magazines in the 1960s, has died at the age of 86.

According to a New York Times report, Fine died in Beverly Hills, California on Friday, May 17. He is reported to have succumbed to multiple atrophy syndrome.

During the 1960s Fine published magazines for the Hearst Corporation. His magazines included Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Town & Country. After leaving Hearst, Fine became the president of New York department store Bonwit Teller.

Fine is, perhaps, most well-known for influencing drug law in the U.S. According to the Times, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller once sent Fine to Japan to discover why the country had such low drug addiction rates. Fine’s report focused on the harsh sentences drug dealers in Japan were given. Rockefeller soon signed into law harsh mandatory minimum prison sentences for drug possession, increasing prison populations and influencing drug laws for decades to come.

The FBI this week revealed that two special agents died during a training exercise on Friday, May 17.

Special Agent Christopher Lorek, 41, and Special Agent Stephen Shaw, 40, died while training off the coast of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The two were part of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, an elite group within the bureau’s Critical Incident Response Group, which is based out of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The cause of the deaths has not been released, and the FBI has stated that the incident is under review.

“We mourn the loss of two brave and courageous men,” said Robert Mueller, FBI director. “Like all who serve on the Hostage Rescue Team, they accept the highest risk each and every day, when training and on operational missions, to keep our nation safe. Our hearts are with their wives, children, and other loved ones who feel their loss most deeply. And they will always be part of the FBI Family.”

Lorek was a 17-year veteran of the FBI, having joined in 1996. Shaw had joined the FBI in 2005.

The FBI describes the Hostage Rescue Team as a national counterterrorist unit. The group responds to “extraordinary” hostage crises and other law enforcement situations within the U.S.

A Navy SEAL was killed and seven other soldiers have been injured in a training accident that occurred this week in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

According to a Louisville Courier-Journal report, 23-year-old Navy SEAL Jonathan Kaloust died Wednesday after his Humvee flipped during training exercises. Seven other soldiers who were injured in the incident have been treated for minor injuries and released.

Kaloust was assigned to the Navy SEAL team in Forty Story, Virginia. According to the Courier-Journal, Kaloust was from Massapequa, New York and attended State University of New York Binghamton University before joining the Navy in 2011.

This is not the first military training death to happen in 2013. Earlier this year, two Navy divers accidentally drowned during training exercises in a test pond at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

Though Fort Knox is most well-known as the location of the U.S. Treasury’s Gold Bullion Depository, the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division, and the 3rd Recruiting Brigade of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command are all located at the facility, in addition to several other divisions.

Jorge Rafael Videla, the former dictator of Argentina, has died at the age of 87.

According to an Associated Press report, Videla died in the Marcos Paz prison in Argintina. He was found dead in his prison bed early Friday morning, and the cause of death has been reported to be natural causes.

Videla was sentenced to life in prison in 1985 for his part in the human rights violations perpetrated by his government. Videla led a military coup in 1976, shortly after the death of Argentine leader Juan Perón. He established a military government that killed thousands of Argentinians during the so-called ‘Dirty War,’ a civil war between the government and guerrilla left-wing groups in the country. The government is remembered for not only killing Marxist fighters, but also ‘disappearing’ thousands of students, left-wing political activists, and other dissidents.

Videla ceded leadership in 1981, shortly before the military government fell. At his trial in the 80s, Videla was found guilty of charges that included murder, kidnapping, and torture. Videla served five years in prison before being pardonded by Argentine President Carlos Menem in 1990. He returned to prison in 1998 on charges of kidnapping children, though he served under house arrest due to his age. His presidential pardon was thrown out in 2007, and he returned to prison after another trial.

It’s never a good idea for a chef to argue or fight with customers. This is especially true if those customers are capable of beating someone to death.

According to an Australian Associated Press (AAP) report, Japanese chef Miki Nozawa died on Monday after a fight with two “disgruntled” customers. The incident took place on the German island of Sylt, and the argument was reportedly about the quality of a fried noodle dish. The customer did not like dish, and left the restaurant without paying. The AAP report states that Nozawa ran into the two customers later that same day at a “table-dance bar,” where the fight broke out.

The 57-year-old Nozawa was taken to a nearby hospital with brain trauma and internal injuries, but died while in intensive care. The specific cause of death is not yet known, though a German prosecutor has stated an autopsy is being performed.

The customers suspected in Nozawa’s death had not yet been found by authorities as of Wednesday.

The University of Oregon this weekend revealed that Alex James Rovello, a junior who played for the university’s tennis team, died on Saturday.

Rovello died in a drowning accident on the McKenzie River in Willamette National Forest. According to an Associated Press report, Rovello was diving off Tamolitch Falls with friends when he failed to surface in the pool below. Rescue attempts were reportedly hampered by the depth and low temperature of the water in the pool.

“The Oregon tennis family is devastated by the loss of Alex,” said Nils Schyllander, head men’s tennis coach at Oregon. “He was an amazing person and teammate and his spirit will live on forever with all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Geri and Jim Rovello, and to the entire family.”

Rovello held a 21-8 record during his 2013 season with the Ducks. Before joining the Oregon tennis team, Rovello went 50-0 in singles play for Cleveland High School in Portland. He won four consecutive state singles titles during his time in high school.

“Alex was so much more than a dedicated and exemplary student-athlete at the University of Oregon,” said Rob Mullens, director of athletics at Oregon. “He was a son, a friend, a teammate, a leader, whose warm personality brought everyone together and whose contributions to the extended Oregon community will resonate long after today. On behalf of the UO family, we extend our sympathies to Alex’s family, and we will honor his memory each and every day.”
