Teradata has introduced a new database technology called Teradata Intelligent Memory, which the company says “creates the industry’s first extended memory space beyond cache that significantly increases query performance and enables organizations to leverage in-memory technologies with big, diverse data.”

In other words, Teradata says, it’s the first in-memory technology that supports big data deployments.

The product is part of the “Unified Data Architecture” strategy, which leverages Teradata, Teradata Aster, and open source Apache Hadoop. As the company notes, data in Apache Hadoop that is frequently used can be accessed through Teradata SQL-H, and based on temperature of the data, moved to Intelligent Memory to take advantage of its computing capability.

“The introduction of Teradata Intelligent Memory allows our customers to exploit the performance of memory within Teradata Platforms in a new way, and extends our leadership position as the best performing data warehouse technology at the most competitive price,” said Scott Gnau , president, Teradata Labs. “Teradata Intelligent Memory technology is built into the data warehouse and customers don’t have to buy a separate appliance. Additionally, Teradata enables its customers to configure the exact amount of in-memory capability needed for critical workloads. It can be difficult, expensive, and impractical to keep all data in memory, and Teradata’s unique approach means the right amount of memory can be applied to the right set of data for blinding performance – automatically.”

“Teradata’s new in-memory architecture is integrated with its management of data temperature,” said Richard Winter , chief executive officer, WinterCorp. “This is very significant, because the hottest data will migrate automatically to the in-memory layer – Teradata Intelligent Memory; the next hottest data will move automatically to solid state disk; and, so on. Teradata also provides the column storage and data compression that amplify the value of data in memory. The customer sees increased performance without having to make decisions about which data is placed in memory.”

Teradata Intelligent Memory is available to current Teradata workload-specific platforms running the Teradata database. It’s available as part of Teradata Database 14.10, which will be released in the second quarter.

Airbnb recently shared an engineer Q&A talking about building its Airbnb Neighborhoods feature. Here’s a look at the feature if you’re unfamiliar:

Introducing Airbnb Neighborhoods from Airbnb on Vimeo.

Basically, it shows users pages about neighborhoods in cities, so they can decide where they want to stay when they visit.

You can read the full Q&A here, but here’s the part where they explain why they ultimately went with Memcached over a SQL database or DynamoDB:

At first, it seemed we wanted a SQL database, as our data had relations. However, this was ruled out based on the need for mass updates. Next, we looked at an in-house NoSQL solution that we call Dyson. Dyson seemed to give us the flexibility we needed with writes and updates, so we tried it. For reference, Dyson is backed by Amazon’s DynamoDB, a reliable, but limited, managed, NoSQL solution. In essence, if we put the data right into DynamoDB, then Dyson can serve it. This led to the creation of a DynamoDB cascading tap. Countless timeouts, headaches and late nights later, we had a working solution.

However, there was a problem, namely DynamoDB’s 65KB storage limit. When you’re storing uncompressed JSON, that’s a pretty easy target to reach. As a band-aid, we engineered a solution involving pages of tuples. To say this solution was sub-optimal is putting it mildly, and the performance was even worse.

With launch quickly approaching, brilliant words saved the day: “You don’t need a database, you need a [expletive deleted] cache” 1. So that’s what we did, we traded our database for a cache. Specifically, we switched from Dyson to Memcached.

Here’s a look at the Neighborhoods admin tool:

Idera announced the availability of three new free tools for SQL Server DBAs and IT administrators: Server Backup Free, SQL Backup Status Reporter and SQL Permissions Extractor Free.

Idera CEO Rick Pleczko says, “Idera has made a commitment to providing free tools and solutions that help both IT and database administrators better manage their servers. It’s our way of paying back the success that the community has helped us achieve.”

“Idera’s Server Backup Free delivers a free copy of their leading high performance server backup product,” the company says in an announcement. “Idera’s SQL backup status reporter and SQL permissions extractor allows DBAs to quickly and easily ensure that databases have been backed up and copy permissions across servers. All of these tools are designed to help administrators better manage the growing number of servers in the enterprise.”

Server Backup Free has all of the features of the Enterprise version, except it’s for a single server. Features include the abiliy to backup physical and virtual servers in just minutes (as opposed to hours), the ability to backup to any disk-based storage (second hard disk, NAS, SAN, etc.), the ability to restore files in seconds with Disk Safe technology, and “easy” installation.

Backup Status Reporter lets DBAs view a graphical representation of backups across their SQL Server environment. Features include: the ability to identify databases that haven’t had backups, the ability to view backup history (including backup date and type), a simplified grid view for easy sorting and navigation, and the ability to identify full and differential backups for one or many databases.

SQL Permissions Extractor lets DBAs copy and reassign permissions from one server to another without having to write any script. It can generate T-SQL scripts for copying of user permissions to other servers, and enables the editing, saving and execution of permissions scripts. It also lets users include object level permissions for selected databases.

Developers need scalable databases more than ever for their apps. Of course, this presents a problem for those apps that become really popular and need more room to grow. It might prove too costly for some developers to traditionally scale their database, but a new startup is challenging that notion with a cloud-based database that easily scales to developers’ needs.

NuoDB announced that its new cloud-based database service has officially launched. The new system operates on what the company calls the “12 Rules for a Cloud Data Management System:”

Modern Superset of an RDBMS

Elastic Scale-out for Extreme Performance

Single Logical Database

Run Anywhere, Scale Anywhere

Nonstop Availability

Dynamic Multi-tenancy

Active/Active Geo-distribution

Embrace Cloud

Store Anywhere, Store Redundantly

Workload Mix

Tunable Durability Guarantees

Distributed Security

Empower Developers & Administrators

With these rules in hand, NuoDB set to change the way developers use databases:

“After a comprehensive trial and intense listening to our 3,500 beta customers, NuoDB is ready for market,” stated Barry Morris. “Our Cloud Data Management System is a game changer. We are challenging the industry to offer comparable elastic scaling, over 1 million transactions per second performance on just $50,000 worth of commodity hardware as published in our latest benchmark report, as well as the many other cloud-friendly features found in our NuoDB Starlings release.”

For the more visual-oriented among us, here’s a helpful video that explains what makes NuoDB different from the rest:

NuoDB in 90 seconds from NuoDB on Vimeo.

NuoDB is already in use by a number of large clients who are using it to build out expansive, scalable databases. One in particular, NorthPoint, has nothing but praise for NuoDB’s service:

“NuoDB is launching a revolution in the database world by leveraging commodity storage. For the first time, an application’s storage requirements can be satisfied using a pool of shared resources, operating in a fully-elastic way, as the nature of cloud computing requires,” said Richard Cooley, Managing Partner, NorthPoint. “The database is no longer a monolithic, resource-intensive burden with limited scalability. While still maintaining the documented benefits of ACID and SQL, NuoDB is about as disruptive as it gets.”

Developers have three options to choose from when it comes to deploying NuoDB. The first is a free option that offers 2 hosts, 4GB of storage, unlimited databases and limited deployment. The second is the Pro version that supports 2 or more hosts, 16GB to multi-petabytes, full deployment and starts at $1,200 a year. Finally, there’s the developer version that offers all the benefits of Pro, but lacks deployment options. It’s free, however, so developers can just go crazy with it.

Google announced some updates to Google Cloud SQL, which will enable users to work with bigger and faster MySQL databases.

Google has increased the amount of available storage to 100GB, which is ten times more than before. They’ve also increased the maximum size of instances to 16GB RAM, which is four times more data users can cache. Additionally, on the speed front, they’ve added functionality for optional asynchronous replication, giving users “the write performance of a non-replicated database, “but the availability of a replicated one,” as Google puts it.

“You want your applications to be fast, even with millions of users,” says product manager Joe Faith. “Anytime your user tries to retrieve information from the app or update settings, it should happen instantly. For the best performance, you need faster, larger databases – especially if you have a growing user base to serve.”

“Google App Engine is designed to scale,” he adds. “And now Google Cloud SQL—a MySQL database that lives in Google’s cloud—has new features to meet the demand for faster access to more data.”

Users can also now choose to store data and run their Cloud SQL database instance in either Google’s US or EU data centers. There is also new integration with Google Apps Script. You can publish and share data with Google Sheets, add data to Google Sites page or create Google Forms without the hosting or server configuration concerns.

Finally, Google announced that there is a new six-month free trial offer for Cloud SQL, effective until June 1, 2013.

On Friday, the FBI sent out a request for information on any existing tattoo databases. The idea here is that they want to collect the information from local law enforcement to create a giant database of tattoos and what they mean. Specifically, the FBI is interested in a tattoo’s “possible meanings, gang affiliations, terrorist groups or other criminal organizations.”

The program is part of a larger operation from the FBI that is wanting to use biometrics to identity potential criminals. The FBI wants the technology to identify threats only through “voice and face recognition, handwriting, palmprints, scars, marks and tattoos.” It seems pretty reasonable considering that a lot of these things do help identify criminals. So what’s the big deal with the FBI wanting to create a database of tattoos?

Mashable repots that many immigrant communities are skeptical about the program and think it’s just a way to deport innocent civilians. It also raises a lot of civil liberty questions as such a program can lead to profiling – racial or otherwise.

Of course, this reeks of what we’ve been hearing about the NSA lately and their reportedly massive domestic spying program. The FBI could use biometrics information in a similar way to keep tabs on not just criminals, but everybody else.

Besides, if the FBI wants to target me with a tattoo, there are a multitude of ways around it. One of the easiest is to just warp your skin through weight gain or other methods that makes the tattoo ever so slightly different. The idea of creating an entire database centered around tattoos, which are easily susceptible to change, is all kinds of ridiculous.

The Web site hacking and dumping of info will not stop – next up is the United Nations.

A hacker going by the handle Casi dumped information from the United Nations Web site yesterday that contained many vulnerabilities that other hackers could use to get inside the UN’s database to cause some real damage.

I guess the question here is why did Casi hack the UN? Well, he tells us himself:

I fuck actually system… I fighting for Internet Freedom, equiality & rights for all. You’re FREEDOM my brothers & my sisters ! <3

What does it mean? I don’t know, but it must have been a pretty good reason to expose almost every weakness currently in the UN’s database.

Similarly, the reason behind listing the vulnerabilities is just as cryptic:

I give vulnerabilities because it’s fucking asshole ! We are FREEDOm !

We are clearly dealing with a criminal mastermind here, or maybe not according to Aaron Titus, Chief Privacy Officer for Identity Finder. Speaking to Fox News’ New York affiliate, he said that the breach was a “very simple attack” and that the UN “could have prevented this very easily and should have prevented it.”

So it seems that the UN just has bad cyber security. It must be embarrassing for the them to be hacked by such a basic SQL injection attack.

Passwords were not exposed, but the real danger lies in what other hackers can do with the information. Identity Finder has reached out to the UN to alert them of the potential danger, but the organization has not replied.

With all these hacks, it’s just a matter of time until every governmental organization’s Web site is laid bare for the world to see. I personally can’t wait to see the database for the White House’s Web site. It must be so scandalous, probably full of photos of the President’s pet.

Back in the summer, Salesforce announced the general availability of Salesforce Chatter, the company’s cloud-based enterprise "social collaboration" app and platform, which a representative for the company once called "Facebook for the Enterprise."

In September, the company released Chatter Mobile, and announced Chatter 2, which includes a desktop app. Now, Salesforce has announced Chatter Free, which the company says will accelerate adoption of social collaboration throughout the enterprise.

With Chatter Free, any Salesforce user can invite colleagues to collaborate with Salesforce Chatter. "The industry’s reception of Salesforce Chatter has blown away our expectations," said CEO Marc Benioff. "The fact that more than 60,000 enterprises have deployed Chatter within the first five months is amazing and the Chatter Free social invites are going to take Chatter enterprise-wide."

"With Chatter Free, salesforce.com is using the same social invitation model popularized by Facebook," the company says. "Now any Salesforce user can invite any colleague — even those who aren’t already Salesforce users — to collaborate with Chatter. By its nature, this social invitation creates a network effect, as the pool of Chatter users widens and deepens across a company."

With Chatter, employees can follow documents, people, business processes, and application data. Features of Chatter Free include: profiles, status Updates, realtime feeds, file sharing, groups, filters, invitations, Chatter Mobile, and Chatter Desktop.

Chatter is included for free with all paying user licenses of Salesforce CRM and Force.com. Chatter Free is available to all employees of paying salesforce.com customers.

Also today, Salesforce revealed a new attempt to take on Oracle in the database market with Database.com, which includes a social data model, file storage, user management, authentication, and development tools. In the video above, SoftwareAdvice CEO Don Fornes interviews Salesforce’s Senior Director of Product Marketing Eric Stahl about database.com.

This sponsored session was an entry level overview of what websites should be doing on their website to get visibility and rankings in search engines.

Here are the 7 Proven Ways to get Your Website on Page 1 Organically & then Convert as stated by the presenter Shawn Moore.

Content is King
What your content says, what your images and video show not only give users a first impression, but those items are also important to how a search engine is going to interpret your website.

Navigation and Architecture
Looking into the way that your menus and internal linking structure are important. Can the web crawlers see and index your navigation? Or is it in JavaScript or Flash that may not be as search friendly?

Blogs
Using a blog is just another way to generate more content for the search engines to index and use to rank your website.

Quality and Keyword Rich Inbound Links
The number of links you have is important, but the quality of those links is more important. Get links from relevant sites and ensure that those links are using keyword phrases and not just your website address or business name.

Database
Shawn said that choosing the right database for your site is important. Some are not search engine friendly and that choosing the wrong one will cause lots of issues down the line.

Electron Press Releases or Optimized Releases
These releases give your site more exposure in search engines and the keyword rich links in the content can help increase your rankings.

Domain Name Strategy
It was recommended that, if you can, choose a domain name with keyword phrases in it as it’ll give an added boost in search engines. You can also purchase additional domain names and forward them onto your website. Try thinking about what a user may type into the address bar of their browser and then register that domain for easy access.

Some of the tips are well known, others were a bit questionable to me. I’m still trying to figure out how a certain type of database can hurt a site as it’s all about how the content is displayed on that page and the URLs used that is the part to be concerned with.

Overall, the session was a good one for those just starting out in the industry.
