The biggest surprise comes from the cuts made at Flickr.

Om Malik of Gigaom gives some interesting insight into these changes by sharing the announcements he picked up from various engineers through tweets. While layoffs do seem to be a part of it there seems to also be some voluntary exits that go along with the forced reductions. While this is completely conjecture on my part, the experience I have had is that when there are voluntary exits that coincide with layoffs that is not a very good sign. Most people are happy that they didn’t get let go and move on with their jobs and just deal with the ‘survivor’s guilt’. If folks are jumping ship of their own accord in conjunction with the layoffs then you have to wonder what is actually happening there.

Malik’s statement below poses an interesting thought.

Frankly, cutting the Flickr team is a bit of a head-scratcher: That group is one of the few pockets of future-thinking tinkerers at Yahoo, especially when it comes to building new media experiences around “social objects” such as photos.

If that is truly the case then there is a talent leak occurring. Of course, the changes that have come with the Carol Bartz era could simply be too much for some to handle. It certainly isn’t the same Yahoo that existed just a few short months ago. Talent that liked a loose culture and atmosphere may be having a negative response to the decidedly different culture that is going to result from Bartz’s leadership.

As can be the case, some of the comments that follow this post exhibit the Yahoo supporters coming to bat for the new Yahoo world order while others wonder if they need to move all of heir photos from the service. There also appears to be a debate about how much, if any, money Flickr generates for the company. All good questions for sure that will only be answered with the passing of time and not opinions.

I know it has everything to do with journalistic integrity and it is the right thing to do but when a newspaper the stature of the New York Times reports on the cuts it must make to its sections to ‘survive’ it’s still sad.

The Times announcement is almost dog piling the evidence of just how bad things are for newspapers in the current environment. We have reported it here quite bit but it is important for the Internet marketing crowd to see what is happening to be able to see what opportunities may arise from this shift in the balance of power in media.

My hope is that newspapers will be able to do what radio did when it was proclaimed dead with the advent of TV about 60 years ago. Radio has become very viable again and has made the transition to online in a way that makes it important again. Is it as important as it was from a pure numbers standpoint? Maybe not but it is more relevant than ever because it can segment consumers for advertisers in ways that are very valuable. It has adapted and found its place in the new world order of media.

Will newspapers be able to make the transition? Too early to tell. The changes that the Times announced were removing sections and combining other areas to cut back on traditional costs like ink and paper for its print runs. Here’s a list of some of the casualties:

Eliminate the Friday Escapes travel section

Reduced local area focus

The magazine will no longer have a regular Fashion feature

These efforts are all in hopes of keeping the newspaper viable without having to make too many more staff cuts and pay reductions. As talked about here the Times also owns the Boston Globe and has gone as far as threatening to shutter the paper if unions do not cooperate to create better economic efficiencies.

What I didn’t see that was probably more upsetting is the effort to improve the online presence and possibly even recognize that the shift that is occurring almost everywhere else is also being recognized by newspapers. Of course, just moving online isn’t a silver bullet because some papers are not even seeing that work as well as hoped.

Maybe the industry has done so much harm to itself from an integrity standpoint that the consumers of news etc are saying that they want different sources regardless of the delivery vehicle. Who knows but all things to be considered when looking at this sea change that is occurring across one of the most prominent traditional media outlets there is.

Are the rumors true? Reports have emerged that Redmond based tech giant Microsoft is set to slash its global workforce, as the pressure of the current financial crisis takes hold.

Last month, speculation started that Microsoft was looking to cut its staff early in the New Year, with unconfirmed reports suggesting several thousands of employees would start 2009 looking for new jobs.

If the rumor mill is to be believed, the cuts will be in the vicinity of 15,000 employees – approx 17% of all Microsoft staff, and d-day was marked as the 15th Jan 2009.

With only a week or so until the anticipated day of dismissals, there has still been no official confirmation from Microsoft executives. "Regarding any potential layoffs, Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation," said a company spokesperson via email to InternetNews.com

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, is expected to announce the start of the Windows 7 public beta next week, and quarterly earnings calls are due on Jan 22, so perhaps the timing is right for the company to announce such cost cutting measures.

If the staff cuts eventuate, it’ll be the first time Microsoft has made such significant layoffs in its history – something the company has prided itself on.

While layoffs of this magnitude are never pleasant, it is a significant statement about Microsoft’s position. Not so much that the company is in any financial risk, but more so that it’s prepared to take a hit to its pride and trim the fat to stay competitive.

For the sake of 15,000 employees, here’s hoping the cost cutting (should it happen) isn’t quite that severe. We’ll be watching closely as d-day draws closer.
