Americans live in a consumer driven culture. Throughout the years, our society has been compelled to consume via text, radio, television, and now, the Internet. The methods of consuming data via the Internet have changed, however, and mobile data consumption is on the rise. In fact, mobile data consumption has exploded over the last few years.

According to a new study from CTIA, American mobile users have consumed 1.1 trillion megabytes between July 2011 and June 2012. That’s a massive increase of 104 percent over last year’s 568 million megabytes. All this data consumption must mean people are using mobile devices a lot more, right? Surprisingly, that is not the case. The study found that mobile use only rose three percent over the last year.

So, what’s causing the increase in data? A number of factors seem to be at play here. For one, MMS message use is on the rise. The regular SMS text message is still the king with 2.273 trillion text messages sent over the last year, but mobile users sent a combined 58.3 billion MMS messages over the last year. That’s a 10.6 percent increase over last year.

The CTIA also attributes the growth to increases in cell sites around the country. They found that wireless carriers have added 28,641 cell sites over the last year for a total of 285,561. The carriers are also upgrading more of their 3G networks to 4G. This only further encourages more data use as more people have access to faster networks for streaming video, music, and other data intensive services.

“As our survey proves, today’s wireless industry offers consumers not only the world’s best products and services, but also the best value. Americans are using more voice, data and text than ever before, but are paying less for their wireless usage than even a year ago. Thanks to the fiercely competitive wireless industry, consumers have a variety of choices from which provider to contract or prepaid plans to devices,” said Steve Largent, President and CEO of CTIA. “With the persistent increase in usage, this survey is another proof point for why our members need more spectrum to meet consumer demands. We appreciate the FCC’s NPRM on the incentive auction of broadcast television spectrum and hope that its brought to market quickly so that our members may continue to innovate and invest in our nation’s economy.”

As Largent points out above, the continued growth of mobile data consumption is becoming increasingly reliant on carriers buying up more spectrum. At its current growth, mobile data consumption could eat through the amount of available spectrum in just a few years. Wireless carriers will need to buy up more spectrum to provide the necessary bandwidth that users expect.

You can check out a preview of the CTIA’s report here. They also have the full survey available for purchase if that’s your thing.

Wireless revenues showed solid year-to-year gains, as wireless data service revenues for 2008 rose to more than $32 billion, according to a survey from CTIA-The Wireless Association.

This represents a 39 percent increase over 2007, when data revenues totaled $23.2 billion. Wireless data revenues for 2008 amounted to nearly 22 percent of all wireless service revenues, and represent what consumers spend on non-voice services.

"The new survey results clearly prove that mobile broadband services are enabling more Americans to grow their world like never before. Wireless technology is an integral part of everyday life for more than 87% of the U.S. population; changing and improving the way we connect and interact with the world around us," said Steve Largent, President and CEO of CTIA -The Wireless Association

. "The wireless industry consistently evolves, innovates, competes and grows every year at a rapid pace, and 2008 has carried on this remarkable trend."

Text messaging continues to be popular, with more than one trillion text messages carried on carriers’ networks in 2008 amounting to more than 3.5 billion messages per day. That’s nearly triple the number from 2007, when 363 billion text messages were sent. Wireless subscribers are also sending more multi-media messages with their mobile devices, with 15 billion MMS messages reported in 2008, up from 6 billion the year before.

As of December 2008, the industry recorded more than 270 million wireless users. This represents a year -over-year increase of almost 15 million subscribers. The 12-month record for subscriber growth was reached in 2005, when 25.7 million new users came online.

Wireless customers used more than 2.2 trillion minutes in 2008, an increase of 100 billion minutes from 2007, and a record six-month wireless service revenues of more than $75 billion with annual service revenues reaching $148 billion by the end of the year.

With the 2009 Presidential Inauguration taking place Tuesday, wireless companies are working to optimize their network capacities in and around Washington, D.C. to prepare for the expected increase in demand.

"For months, wireless carriers have been working hard to prepare for what could be an unprecedented Inauguration week," said Steve Largent, President and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association.

Steve Largent
President & CEO
CTIA

"Companies are going to extraordinary lengths investing significant amounts of time and money, and are doing everything within their power to boost network capacities in Washington, D.C. for this historic event."

To prepare for the crowds and huge spikes in wireless traffic, carriers are adding more technicians to monitor their networks and work with government agencies involved in the Inauguration events.

They are also taking steps to address capacity issues, including adding new radio channels to augment existing cell sites, provisioning additional portable sites and enhancing in – building wireless coverage at key locations throughout Washington, D.C.

"Despite all the industry’s efforts to increase network capacity, it’s really important for the public to understand that unusually large crowds can generate congestion and communications delays," Largent continued. "Think of a wireless network like a highway. Even though we’re building more lanes, if millions of people jump on the road at the same time, there could be a traffic jam."

"For this reason, we want to remind Inaugural event attendees to do their part in decreasing network demand by texting instead of placing voice calls, and holding off on sending cell phone pictures or video until after the events are over."

Wireless data service revenues for the first half of 2008 reached $14.8 billion, a 40 percent increase over the first half of 2007, when data revenue totaled $10.5 billion, according to the CTIA-The Wireless Association latest survey.

Wireless data revenues now account for 20 percent of all wireless service revenues, and represent money that people spend on non-voice services.

The survey found that text messaging again set new records, with 75 billion messages reported in the month of June, an average of about 2.5 billion messages a day. This is an increase of 160 percent over the 28.8 billion messages in June 2007.

Wireless subscribers continue to capture and send more pictures and other multi-media messages, more than 5.6 billion MMS messages in the first half of 2008, almost as many as were sent in all of 2007.

As of June 2008, there were more than 262 million wireless users. This is a year-over-year increase of close to 20 million subscribers. The 12-month record for subscriber growth was reached in 2005, when 25.7 million new users came online.

Wireless customers used more than 1.12 trillion minutes in the first half of 2008, up 10.9 percent over the first half of 2007, and generated more than $72 billion in total wireless revenue in six months.

"These statistics prove that wireless service in today’s marketplace means so much more to American consumers than just voice-calls," said Steve Largent, CTIA-The Wireless Association President and CEO.

"More and more people are using wireless devices to access the Internet, take photos, get directions, watch videos, download music and send text messages. But this is just the beginning. When wireless customers want even more from their handsets and networks, the industry will continue to respond, evolve, innovate, and deliver to meet this growing demand."

Virginia’s General Assembly is proposing legislation that would prohibit texting while driving an electric wheelchair, riding a bicycle, motorcycle and a moped.

"Obviously, text messaging is a huge distraction. No one could dispute that," Janet Brooking executive director of Drive Smart Virginia, a statewide nonprofit advocacy group told the Washington Post. "We could save a lot of lives with these bills."

The penalty for driving while texting would be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $250 and court costs. Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, said it would be a challenge to enforce the law because it’s difficult to look into moving cars. She did say they would look for other problems such as weaving or slowing down.

A year ago Virginia legislators made it illegal for anyone under 18 to talk, send text messages or snap photos with a cell phone while driving, but they will only be ticketed if they are stopped for another offense.

Joe Farren, spokesman for the CTIA-The Wireless Association said his organization supports the ban. "We don’t think anyone should text message while driving," he said. "We don’t have a problem with that."

Nielsen Wireless will launch their first product, Mobile Vector in the U.S. in July 2007.

"The value of an entertainment medium is directly proportional to how well it is measured," said Nielsen Vice President Jeff Herrmann. "Reliable and accurate measurement of mobile consumers will enable advertisers to properly evaluate the mobile marketing opportunity."

"This new mobile measurement service demonstrates Nielsen’s continued commitment to follow content wherever consumers take it. Independent measurement of the cross-media behavior of the growing mobile audience will support and accelerate the evolution of mobile media business models."

Nielsen Wireless estimates that in the first quarter of 2007, over 33 million persons 12 and older used the mobile Web and more than 8 million watched video on their mobile phone. According to the CTIA (the international association for the wireless telecommunications industry), there are over 230 million wireless subscriptions in the U.S.

VoIP firm Skype wants the Federal Communications Commission to force cellular providers into letting people have more choice about how they connect to those wireless networks.

Professor Tim Wu at Columbia Law School has spurred Skype and the wireless trade group CTIA into a vocal spat that has resonated at the FCC. Buoyed by Wu’s paper on consumer choice in the cellular market, Skype has asked the FCC to do to wireless carriers what it did to the old AT&T monopoly many years ago.

EETimes said Skype wants the FCC to break open the cellular companies’ stranglehold on wireless networks under the provisions of the Carterfone decision in 1968. AT&T had to allow customers to connect to their network with phones made and distributed by other companies.

Wu’s paper discussed four areas of concern with regards to wireless net neutrality that he felt warranted more attention. One of those points, Product Design and Feature-Crippling, asserts the cellular carriers have too much influence over hardware design and what people can do with their phones:

By controlling entry, carriers are in a position to exercise strong control over the design of mobile equipment. They have used that power to force equipment developers to omit or cripple many consumer-friendly features. Carriers have also forced manufacturers to include technologies, like “walled garden” Internet access, that neither equipment developers nor consumers want. Finally, through under-disclosed “phone-locking,” the U.S. carriers disable the ability of phones to work on more than one network.

If such control were removed, anyone could use any device to connect to a wireless network. For Skype, it could mean a whole new world of potential users of their service being opened up to them.

The cellular companies aren’t about to take such a threat to their lucrative business model without a fight. CTIA blasted the petition Skype filed with the FCC:

“Skype’s self-interested filing contains glaring legal flaws and a complete disregard for the vast consumer benefits provided by the competitive marketplace,” said Steve Largent, chief executive of the CTIA in a prepared statement. “Skype’s ‘recommendations’ will freeze the innovation and choice hundreds of millions of consumers enjoy today. The call for imposing monopoly era Carterfone rules to today’s vibrant market is unmistakably the wrong number,” Largent said.

The Carterfone decision itself drew from the 1934 Communication Act. Cellphone companies that think thirty-nine years should distance them from Carterfone should keep the time gap between the Communication Act and Carterfone in mind.

Infinity Acquisition Corp., Inc. has teamed up with Toplists.com to create what they contend may be the largest and most comprehensive list of “SMS” wireless numbers in the United States.

The CTIA estimates that there are over 214,000,000 wireless subscribers currently in the U.S. Infinity believes that as that number grows, so will the reach of text messaging for direct marketing.

“For the first time it is possible to directly target messages to individuals in ‘real-time’ directly to them regardless of where they are,” stated Manny Shulman, President of Infinity Acquisitions.

“This ability to connect almost instantaneously with consumers will change the face of direct marketing and advertising.”

Infinity says it plans to utilize the “SMS” database for business to consumer promotional purposes in the near future. The company has also begun negotiations with several companies regarding effective strategies and plans of how to advance the technology and effectively utilize the SMS database to maximize potential and execution.

Richard Hill, a Director of E-CRM Solutions and a contributing author to WebProNews, reports that when “used properly SMS marketing is a really effective Customer Relationship Management as it goes a long way to giving information, knowledge and empowerment to customersFor example: an insurer or broker sending details of local emergency number such as hospitals and consulates.”

Just returned from a whil-wind couple of days in Vegas to take in CTIA Wireless and the Navteq Challenge.

CTIA was as huge as ever with content once again dominating the show, in particular mobile music and mobile entertainment in general. User numbers are soaring, devices are plentiful and truly amazing. Loads of new apps and services are available but once again users are screaming for simple apps that are easy to access, simple to use, and affordable. Make it simple was what people are screaming for and once again content is king.

I still have loads of notes to go through but for now I have tons of images from Vegas up on the flickr gallery – see the CTIA Wireless 2006 & Navteq LBS Challenge sets – I even managed to hook up with former NFLer Jerry Rice while I was there!
