A three-judge panel has denied requests to release the photos and videos taken on the night Osama Bin Laden was killed. The District of Columbia Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals sided with the Obama Administration against a conservative watchdog group, Judicial Watch, that had been attempting to get the photos released.

The administration argued – and the court agreed – that the photos and video footage from that night should remain classified in the interests of the safety of Americans abroad. The administration expressed concern that if the photos became public, it would spark riots and other anti-American violence in certain parts of the world. The ruling, which was unanimous, held that the government’s reasons for classifying the photos Top Secret – and thus exempt from the Freedom of Information Act – were justified.

The raid that killed Bin Laden, for whom U.S. authorities had been searching for over ten years, was conducted by U.S. Navy SEALs in May 2011 in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The SEALs took several photos and video of the raid and its aftermath, including photos of Bin Laden’s body, partly so that the CIA could use facial recognition technology to confirm Bin Laden’s death.

A Texas judge has ruled that a Lesbian couple will lose their children if they continue to cohabitate.

According to an Associated Press report on the ruling, a clause in Carolyn Compton’s divorce states that her children are not allowed to spend the night with her while a “romantic partner” also spends the night. The clause could be side-stepped if the woman were to be married to the “romantic partner,” but gay marriage is not yet legal in the state of Texas.

Compton’s partner, Paige Price, has been ordered to move out of the home they share within 30 days, or Compton faces losing custody of her two daughters, ages 10 and 13. Compton’s husband reportedly wanted the divorce clause enforced for the “benefit” of the children.

According to the AP report, Compton and Price have argued that the divorce clause is unconstitutional, on the basis that it limits their “thought, belief, and experssion.”. The couple have stated that they will comply with the judge’s order, though they believe is could be “harmful to the children” and disruptive to their family.

Boston Celtics guard Terrence Williams was arrested Sunday in Washington State on charges of brandishing a firearm. According to police, the incident happened during an argument with the mother of his 10-year-old son. When Williams arrived to pick up his son, he got into an argument with the boy’s mother. During the argument Williams allegedly made threats and brandished a firearm.

Williams was later tracked down by police and arrested, though his gun was not found. He appeared in court yesterday in Kent, Washington, where a judge set his bail at $25,000.

According to the Boston Herald, officials with the Celtics have declined to comment on the situation, the organization is said to be conducting its own investigation of the incident, per policy.

Williams came to the Celtics late last season after playing for the Nets, Rockets, Kings, and a team in China. He played a handful of games – including two playoff games – last season. The Celtics have signed him to a $948,000 contract, provided he earns a spot on the team’s roster during training camp.

In October 2012, the armed robbery and kidnapping case for which O.J. Simpson was convicted in 2008 was reopened. Simpson is currently serving 33 years in prison for the charges, but the former football star is hoping to get a new trial. He is claiming that he is entitled to a new trial due to his lawyers’ ineptness during the first trial. This week, Simpson got his first hearings on the possibility of a retrial.

According to an Associated Press report on today’s hearing, Simpson was allowed to have his right hand free during the hearing, to take notes and drink water.

Witnesses were called to testify about the legal advice given by Simpson’s former trial lawyer, Yale Galanter. Simpson’s co-counsel during the trial, Gabriel Grasso, today testified against Galanter’s trial strategy of focusing on Simpson’s claimed ignorance of the guns that were used in the robbery. Galanter is expected to testify on Friday.

Simpson was convicted in 2008 for leading a 2007 armed robbery at the Palace Station hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Simpson and his associates stole memorabilia at gunpoint from a sports memorabilia dealer, claiming that the items had been previously stolen from him. Following the conviction, Simpson appealed, but the conviction was upheld by the Nevada Supreme Court in 2010. Without a new trial, Simpson may only have to serve nine years of his sentence, as he is up for parole in 2017.

In 2011, LulzSec was a name that everybody knew. They were the hacking group behind the PlayStation Network hack of 2011 that brought the service down for more than a month. They were also responsible for a number of other attacks on companies over the course of a few months.

Since then, the members of LulzSec have been rounded up and taken to trial. The latest trial saw Cody Kretsinger, known as “Recursion” in online circles, sentenced to a year in prison. He was convicted on one count of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer. After his year in prison, he will remain under home detention.

You may be thinking that Kretsinger’s sentence is a little light. He was able to get his sentence down to a year thanks to a plea bargain he made last year with federal prosecutors. As part of that plea bargain, he admitted to hacking into a Sony Pictures’ database and sharing the information with other members of LulzSec.

Home detention won’t be the only thing that Kretsigner has to look forward to after his stint in prison either. The U.S. district judge ordered him to complete 1,000 hours of community service. Maybe he can help clean up Sony Pictures’ studios in Los Angeles to help make up the $600,000 in damages that federal prosecutors say he caused the studio.

Kretsinger is one of the last original LulzSec members to be sentenced for their hacking spree in 2011. The hacker collective fell apart last year when its leader, known as Sabu, went rogue and started working with the FBI as an informant. There have been attempts to resurrect the group since then, but nothing has come of it.

Since 9/11 and the implementation of the Patriot Act, the FBI’s use of National Security Letters to obtain info has skyrocketed.

National Security Letters (NSL) are a form of a demand letter that are used by the U.S. Government (mostly the FBI) to extract information from an organization in the name of national security. The kind of info requested in NSLs includes stuff like transactions, phone numbers, and email addresses.

And it shouldn’t surprise you that a company like Google finds itself at the receiving end of many of these letters.

But according to a report, Google is fighting back against them in court.

Last week, Google filed papers in the case In Re Google Inc. Petition to set aside Legal Process. Although most of the documents are sealed, Bloomberg reports that Google is in fact challenging Section 2709 of Titles 18, which deals with National Security Letters. Section 2079 gives the FBI the ability to issue NSLs that force services like Google to give up user info that “relevant to an investigation” into national security issues.

The law also allows NSLs to come complete with gag orders, barring the recipients from even discussing them with their users.

The case is in front of US District Judge Susan Illston, who just a couple of weeks ago ruled NSLs unconstitutional.

Last month, Google began to include National Security Letter requests (demands?) in its Transparency Report, which also discloses users data requests made by governments using search warrants and subpoenas, as well as content removal requests. The NSL info is vague – Google reported somewhere between 0 and 999 NSLs affecting between 1000 and 1999 users last year. This info is vague because of the laws concerning NSLs and their inherent secrecy.

Google said that they worked with the FBI to lossen this secrecy ever so slightly to allow for their inclusion in the Transparency Report.

“You’ll notice that we’re reporting numerical ranges rather than exact numbers. This is to address concerns raised by the FBI, Justice Department and other agencies that releasing exact numbers might reveal information about investigations,” said Google.

But it appears that Google is now actually fighting the NSLs in court.

“The people who are in the best position to challenge the practice are people like Google,” said EFF attorney Matt Zimmerman. “So far no one has really stood up for their users.”

Google has declined to comment.

Judge Judy certainly hasn’t let her legal career get in the way of motherhood. Judith Scheindlin (her real name) has seven children and 12 grandchildren. At least one of those children has followed in their mother’s footsteps and entered the legal profession.

Adam Levy, son of Scheindlin and her first husband, is now the district attorney for Putnam County, New York. This week, Levy has found himself embroiled in a child molestation investigation due to what appears to be a disagreement with Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith.

Last week, Alexandru Hossu was arrested and charged in connection with the rape of a 12-year-old girl back in 2010. The statement released by the sheriff’s office listed Hossu’s address as Levy’s home address.

The county sheriff’s office has stated that Hossu is a personal trainer and that he may have been a “live-in personal trainer” with the Levys for a time. When Levy’s office learned of the arrest, it released a statement that included Levy recusing himself from the case. The statement included the acknowledgement that Levy’s family had known Hossu “for years,” but pointed out that Hossu does not live at Levy’s address.

The sheriff’s office shot back, releasing a statement that Levy “is trying to influence and affect the investigation” by publishing Hossu’s address. Levy’s office offered another retort, releasing a statement calling Smith’s statement “unfounded”:

Despite Sheriff Smith’s unfounded allegations and misstatements, the facts will show my office acted properly in every aspect of the investigation. Now, I need to continue to concentrate my efforts on the work that I was elected to do by the people of Putnam County as its District Attorney.

The nearby Westchester County district attorney has taken over the investigation.

Lindsey Lowe, the woman on trial for the murder of her twin newborns, has been found guilty.

Nashville-area CBS affiliate News Channel 5 is reporting that Lowe was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder, two counts of first degree premeditated murder, and two counts of aggravated child abuse. She was sentenced to life in prison, with 51 years before she will be eligible for parole. Lowe is 26 years old.

Lowe is alleged to have smothered her newborn twins in a bathroom after giving birth at her parents’ house, where she lived. Her parents found the body of one of the infants in a laundry basket two days later.

Lowe reportedly did not tell anyone that she was pregnant, and her friends, family, and fiance did not catch on, even when she was nine months pregnant. The prosecution presented internet searches on pregnancy topics to indicate that Lowe knew she was pregnant. Lowe’s defense tried to convince the jury that she was mentally ill and in denial about her pregnancy.

Judge Judy may be known for her stern demeanor when deciding court cases, but now America’s most famous judge might find herself on the other side of the bench.

TMZ is reporting that Judge Judy has been sued by a woman named Patric Jones over, of all things, dishes. Jones alleges that her ex-husband, Randy Douthit, a producer on Judge Judy’s TV program, sold the couple’s expensive China to Judge Judy during the divorce process.

Jones estimated that the fine china is work over $500,000, but alleges that Douthit sold the dishes to Judge Judy for a tenth of that price. She alleges that the sale was a revenge plot against her by the judge and Douthit. The lawsuit is asking for the dishes or Jones’ full estimated price for the dishes. Punitive damages have also been tacked on.

The video below shows a short interview with Jones’ lawyer, who was accosted by a TMZ cameraman:

Back in 2006, a video was uploaded to YouTube featuring a group of school kids bullying an autistic child. Three Google executives – David Drummond, Peter Fleischer and George Reyes – were convicted in 2010 by a judge in Milan on grounds of “failure to comply with the Italian privacy code,” though Google said it removed the video after being notified, and worked with Italian authorities to help ID he person responsible for uploading it.

“In essence this ruling means that employees of hosting platforms like Google Video are criminally responsible for content that users upload,” wrote Matt Sucherman, Google VP and Deputy General Counsel – Europe, Middle East and Africa at the time. “We will appeal this astonishing decision because the Google employees on trial had nothing to do with the video in question.”

Fast forward to this past December when the decision was overturned, and the execs were acquitted. Details of the ruling have now been made public, as Reuters reports, saying that the court ruled “Internet platforms like Google cannot be forced to filter every video uploaded by users without endangering freedom of thought and their own functionality.”

Had the decision gone the other way, it could have had huge ramifications for the web, social media and user-generated sites. How many executives want to risk going to prison because of something a total stranger uploaded to their site? How many executives of such services would already be in danger of facing such action?

So, yeah, we’ll chalk this one up as a win for the Internet.
