Groupon is reportedly testing e-commerce deals in the UK. There have been a lot of questions and uncertainty about just what the future holds for Groupon, and this would appear to be Groupon being in the midst of making a huge move for its future.

Bloomberg Businessweek reports that Groupon has begun offering discounts of up to 80% on products sold on the web, to UK customers. Customers get a code to enter on the manufacturer’s site for the discount on their online order.

Nothing groundbreaking there, but it could provide another huge source of revenue for Groupon if it expands to the rest of Groupon’s markets, and it could do a whole lot for e-commerce businesses who struggle in their quest for online visibility.

Groupon’s classic pitch to businesses is that they can get repeat customers after offering a deal on Groupon, but I could see this being an even better pitch to online businesses. It’s a lot easier for a customer to come back to a web site than it is a brick and mortar store. As long as you offer them a great experience when they get there, they may just come back for future purchases. E-commerce businesses will want to make sure their sites are at the top of their games when they run an e-commerce Groupon.

But for now, this appears only to be a limited test, and there’s a chance it will never become more than that. Groupon’s not talking about it, but if the test goes well, we can probably expect this to become a widespread offering for Groupon.

A study released this week finds that businesses who offer Groupons tend to have lower reviews on Yelp, indicating that Groupons aren’t the best for a business’ reputation.

Meanwhile, Yipit reports that Groupon’s revenue increased 13%T from July to $121 million.

Legend has it that Groupon turned down a $6 billion offer from Google, which if accepted would have been Google’s biggest acquisition to date. Time will tell if this was a smart move or not, but Andrew Mason, Groupon’s CEO seems fairly confident in the company’s future.

Do you think Groupon will remain independent? Will the Internet giants be able to contend? Comment here.

Mason recently appeared on Charlie Rose, who asked him about the offer. He declined to talk about it specifically, but did offer this response: "I think every choice we make in the company comes down to a core of this idea we have of what Groupon could be, and the place it could play in the world in the rest of the 21st century, and every choice that we make is which option will make it more possible for us to get there. So I think whatever we decide to do with the company – the people that we hire, the deals that we run – every itty bitty choice is how do we build this company into something that transforms the way people buy from local businesses?"

Rose asked if the decision had been influenced by decisions Facebook had made, to which Mason responded: "I can’t talk about this Charlie. You can’t talk about all kinds of things largely because for the same reason that every person you go on a date with…you don’t bring them home to your parents right away."

Mason said that the company, which began as nothing more than a side project is adding about 30 cities a month in 35 countries, has 40 million subscribers, and just added 3 million subscribers the previous week.

Can Groupon Become the Next Amazon?

Mason said he wants Groupon to change the way people buy from local businesses like Amazon changed how they buy products, and told Rose, "The discount is this great trick that we’re playing on people because we’re tricking them into getting out of the house and live their lives, because it’s there for one day. It’s like, ‘I’ve always wanted to go skydiving. If I’m gonna do it, I might as well do it now because it’s never gonna be cheaper,’ so we finally get people to commit and get off the couch and go out and have some fun."

Of course Amazon might wish to be that company too. The company recently invested 175 million into LivingSocial, one of Groupon’s biggest competitors.

The Savior for Small Businesses?

Mason said Groupon was able to give one business half the number of customers in one day that the business had previously had in the previous 25 years combined. That’s quite a feat, and the kind of power that would make such a large price tag from Google seem pretty legit.

"We’re the savior for small businesses," Mason told Rose. "For consumers, we want to reverse this trend of spending more and more time on the computer, and help people rediscover their cities." He Later added, "We found a way to make the coupon cool."

Mason is well aware of the Groupon copycats out there, but appears satisfied with the large lead it has in the market, the rate of expansion, and the company’s focus on what it does.

For right now, it looks like Groupon will have some pretty fierce competition from some bigger players it hasn’t really had to contend with much yet, however. Google, Facebook, and Amazon are all going to want a piece of this pie, and all have a great deal of resources and sway over consumer habits on the web itself. 2011 is going to be a most intriguing year for local business deals.

Watch the entire interview here. Mason’s a pretty funny guy.

Do you think Groupon is the savior for small businesses? Tell us what you think.

Update: Groupon has reportedly rejected Google’s offer.

There’s a reason why Google is going after Groupon as opposed to one of its competitors. Not only is it the leader in its space, it’s the leader in its space by a long shot. Experian Hitwise has shared some data comparing market share of visits of Group Coupon Sites, and Groupon is way ahead of its closest competitor, LivingSocial.

A Google acquisition could make Groupon’s market share skyrocket even more, though LivingSocial just got a nice infusion of cash from the biggest retailer on the web. LivingSocial announced a $175 Million Investment by Amazon, as well as an additional $8 million investment from Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The company says it will use the investment to maintain a "steady drumbeat of worldwide launches and overall business growth". LivingSocial already has over 10 million subscribers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia.

"To be the biggest player in the local commerce space there is no one better to work with than Amazon," said LivingSocial CEO Tim O’Shaughnessy. "As the social shopping space continues to heat up, LivingSocial is committed to staying focused on providing the high level of quality that consumers and merchants have come to expect when working with us."

Along with the above chart, Experian Hitwise shared the following information:

- Groupon.com received 79% of US visits last week and Living Social received 8% among a custom category of 81 Group Buying sites last week

- First, (the site) appeared in Spring of this year, that Living Social’s visit growth would make it a viable threat to Groupon. As the chart denotes, that growth-spurt was very short lived.

- Second, if we look at the graph’s end-point, Living Social’s market-share is almost an order of magnitude lower than Groupon’s.

- So one-tenth of $6 billion dollars (Groupon’s valuation) is less than Living Social’s projected valuation. Of course traffic to valuation is a gross over-simplification. Perhaps Living Social’s audience composition would validate a higher value.

- The main difference between the two audiences, is that Groupon has clearly "crossed the chasm" in Geoffrey Moore speak, with strong showings in types like Mosaic type C02 – Prime Middle America. Probably the most interesting difference is the percentage of Young Cosmopolitans – type H01 that are frequenting LivingSocial.

- From prior analysis we know that Young Cosmos are one [of] the strongest early adopter segments. Despite the very unimpressive traffic numbers, perhaps Amazon is recognizing the potential for LivingSocial to move beyond its current early adopter phase.

Both Groupon and LivingSocial will have plenty of competition to deal with moving forward as this space is getting incredibly hot. If Google buys Groupon, it will have a clear advantage over the rest, however (even more so than it already does), with Google’s new overall focus on local and social. Amazon is very powerful though, so that should be huge for LivingSocial.

Consumers want online retailers to be more interactive and offer more personalization features according to a new a survey from IBM.

The changing economy has led to a smarter consumer who uses technology to make more informed buying decisions, exchange information with others, make purchases on-the-go and shop multiple channels.

More than three-quarters (79%) of consumers want to use websites to access and print coupons, while 75 percent want to use mobile phones to find out where the nearest store is located and 66 percent want to see what items are in stock before going to a store.

"We are in a shopper’s market today, because consumer access to technology and information gives them all the power," said Jill Puleri, IBM Global Industry Retail Executive, IBM Global Business Services.

"Retailers cannot afford to sit still as this digital revolution happens. They must engage plugged-in consumers in new and different ways, on their terms, and with more bi-directional feedback and dialogue."

From the consumer’s point of view, the top areas of improvement for online retailers were around offering customized promotions and ensuring product availability. More than half (61%) of respondents said they would spend more with a retailer if they got these two areas right.

While IBM’s analysis found that consumers are increasingly ready to use technologies to interact with retailers and with other consumers, this trend is even more pronounced in growth markets. Consumers in India, China and Brazil, are almost twice as willing to use multiple technologies for shopping and making purchases. This is mainly because the adoption of new technologies is often faster in emerging countries.

Online retail websites experienced significant growth in November as the holiday season officially kicked off, according to a new report from comScore.

Among the top gaining retail sub-categories were toys, consumer electronics, and department stores, each growing more than 30 percent compared to October. Toys sites attracted 27.4 million Americans during the month, representing a 33-percent increase from the previous month. Toysrus led the category with more than 14.8 million visitors (up 82%), ranking as the fourth top-gaining property in November. The LEGO Group landed in the second spot in the toys category wit 3.8 million visitors (up12%), followed by Disney Shopping with 2.6 million (up29%) and AmericanGirl.com with 1.9 million (up 44%).

"November marks the official start of the holiday shopping season as millions of Americans search for gifts and deals both online and in stores," said Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix.

"With nearly 4 out of 5 Americans online visiting a retail site during November, the Internet clearly represents an increasingly important channel for retailers during the holiday season and beyond."

Consumer electronics sites grew to 52.8 million visitors during the month, a 32 percent increase over October, led by Best Buy with nearly 25 million visitors and Walmart Electronics with 9.9 million visitors (up 139%). Radio Shack ranked third with 5.1 million visitors, followed closely by eBay Electronics with 4.8 million visitors (up 12 %) and Buy.com with 4.4 million visitors (up 11%).

Online department stores saw a 33 percent gain, reaching nearly 81 million unique visitors in November. Walmart led the category with 46.2 million visitors (up 62%), followed by Target with 38.8 million (up 43%), Sears with more than 19 million (up 36%), JCPenney with 15.4 million (up 34%), and Macy’s with 12.7 million (up 38%).

Online shoppers flocked to coupon sites, making it the #3 gaining category in November, growing 33 percent to 37.5 million visitors. Coupons, Inc. landed in the top spot with more than 8 million visitors (up 9%), followed by EverSave.com with 5.3 million visitors and RetailMeNot with 5.1 million (up43%). BlackFriday.Info experienced a huge surge in activity, increasing more than 1,000 percent to 5 million visitors. GottaDeal.com saw traffic increase 955 percent to 1.8 million.

The month of November saw online spending increase 10 percent versus a year ago to reach nearly $12.3 billion in sales. comScore noted that the comparison is against a very weak November 2008, due to the economic crisis. Black Friday hit $595 million in online sales, an 11 percent increase over Black Friday 2008. Cyber Monday reached $887 million in online spending, up 5 percent compared to a year ago.

Google sites led the U.S. search market in November with 65.6 percent of the search queries conducted, up slightly from October. Yahoo trailed with 17.5 percent share (down 0.5 points from October), and Microsoft at 10.3 percent (an increase of 0.4 points from October). Ask grabbed 3.8 percent of the search market, followed by AOL with 2.8 percent.

Just in time for the shopping craziness that is Black Friday, Google’s made it easier for companies to get coupons to consumers who are on the move. Google Local Business Center users can now make their coupons accessible to people through mobile devices.

Yes, assuming that shoppers don’t lose the use of their fingers due to standing outside in the cold since 3 AM – or having them crushed during a stampede – getting discounts through their cell phones will be a relatively simple matter.

A post on the Google Mobile Blog explained, "If a business adds a mobile coupon to its Google Local Business Center listing, you’ll be able to access it from your mobile device. Just go to google.com on your phone and search for a local business. When you land on its Place Page, you’ll see any coupons or discounts that might be available. Then simply show the participating business the coupon, right from your phone, to redeem the offer."

Or, if you feel like putting in a little prep time and carrying around some pieces of paper, Google’s refined the process of printing out the coupons from a computer as part of this update.

And of course, this way of accessing coupons will remain in place long after retailers close their doors today, so even people who aren’t able to take advantage of it soon may benefit at some other point in time.
