The contest involves tweeting your all-time best costume to Bing, and if Bing selects your idea and retweets it, you win the money.

With Halloween right around the corner, people are racking their brains to come up with creative costume ideas.

Well, we want to help those folks find some inspiration so we’re inviting you to share your best Halloween costumes with @Bing. Simply tell us your all-time best costume and we will give five lucky respondents a $100 Amazon gift card for sharing.

In order to enter, you must follow @Bing on Twitter. Then, you tweet your all-time best costume @Bing with the hashtag #BingHalloween. If yours is picked, you win.

That data comes from Hitwise UK, so it may appear to be the Brits following America’s lead from last year. But a quick Google Trends search shows that searches for "pirate costume" is beating Hanna Montanna and Michael Myers masks handily.

New to the list is "master chief costume." You can thank the release of Halo 3 for that one.
 
Interestingly, this year’s most popular list isn’t that different from last year’s: pirates, Star Wars, fairies, Beetlejuice.

Now there was a movie!

As for movie villains, Yahoo says Michael Myers leads the pack, followed by newcomer Jigsaw from "Saw," Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, Hannibal Lecter, Pinhead*, and Leatherface.

Yahoo’s top costume list in the "final hours" is a bit different though. Pirates don’t even make Yahoo’s list. The top 10:

3.    Charlie’s Angels costumes
4.    Gothic Costumes
5.    School Girl costumes
6.    Zombie costumes

*Pinhead is my least favorite of Clive Barker’s characters – not nearly as scary as Uriel the Scourge in Weaveworld, which is a fantastic book, if you haven’t read it.

In general, if originality is your goal, you should stay away from characters you see on TV – always prime sources for popular costumes. And, according to Yahoo, it doesn’t necessarily have to be TV from this decade.

The Flintstones make three appearances in Yahoo’s top 20 list, one appearance at number 5; the Addams Family still gets some love, as does "I Love Lucie," "I Dream of Jeannie," Scooby Doo, Star Trek and Charlie’s Angels.

Well, Star Trek shouldn’t be all that surprising, with all the fanatics out there. Star Wars was never a TV show, but if so, Google Trends says Star Wars costumes kick the Spock-ears off of Star Trek costume searches.

Nonetheless, your top 10 Halloween costume searches are as follows:

3.    Sharpay Costume
4.    Dog the Bounty Hunter Costume

Could be a biased sample as Google Trends has High School musical way outpacing Hannah Montana. If Dog the Bounty Hunter is popular, hopefully someone will buck the trend and go as his wife. Supplies: wig, tank top, shorts, two large balloons. 

I usually like to work in puns and expressions myself. "Green with envy," for example, requires a green jumpsuit, some face-paint, and cardboard "NV" on your chest. For the ladies, "Tickled Pink" is always a fun one.
