The Associated Press is reporting that Batman will be getting some new backstory in an upcoming story arc to be written by Scott Snyder.

Though key elements of Bruce Wayne’s past will not be changed (his parents will still have been murdered) the character’s growth from Bruce Wayne to Batman will receive a makeover. The 11-part story will detail Bruce Wayne’s first encounter with a super villain and show him building the bat cave. It will also reveal a new story on how the character eventually donned the now-famous Batman costume. The story arc will be called “The Zero year.”

Snyder told the AP that he and other DC Comics writers “tried to preserve as much of Batman’s history as we could.” He also mentioned that DC is “not going to take apart ‘Year One,” referring to Frank Miller’s 1987 Batman story that recounts Batman’s early crime fighting. Many of the elements from that story were used by Christopher Nolan in the most recent Batman film adaptations, including Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

“The Zero Year” will begin as Robin, the Boy Wonder, has been killed off in the comic Batman Incorporated. The most current Robin was the son of Bruce Wayne, suggesting that, perhaps, the introspection of “The Zero Year” will shape Batman as a character going forward.

Superman and Batman have an interesting dynamic together that’s been explored numerous times in DC fiction over the years. One of the best examples was when Batman and Superman teamed up in World’s Finest to take down a partnership between The Joker and Lex Luthor. Now DC is bringing them back together for a new series.

DC Comics announced this week that it would be starting up a new Batman/Superman comic book series as part of the New 52 reboot that launched last year. The new series will focus on the first meeting between what are arguably DC’s most iconic and popular characters.

First time DC writer Greg Pak will be in charge of the story with Jae Lee handling the art. Marvel fans will know Pak from his work on Incredible Hullk and War Machine. Jae Lee is also a frequent Marvel artist who has worked on series like Fantastic Four and Young Avengers. This will not be Lee’s first time with DC, however, as he did the art for Before Watchmen: Ozymandias last year.

So what’s the new series going to be about? Pak isn’t saying much, but he did tell USA Today that the first meeting between the two heroes will probably not be pleasant:

“What would your reaction be if you saw a guy running around in a bat costume in the dead of night attacking people for the first time? And what would your reaction be if you met an alien who could crush steel in his bare hands for the first time? These guys are going to have very different immediate impressions of each other than we’re used to seeing with these characters.”

As for the art, check out Lee’s sketch of Batman, courtesy of DC Comics:

Peter Parker, otherwise known as Spider-Man, dies in the latest issue of the long running comic series. It’s not too surprising either as both Marvel and DC have been killing off characters to only resurrect them in later reboots and retellings. The surprising part is how Peter Parker was killed, and that has some fans not too happy with Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott.

For those who don’t mind spoilers, Spider-Man No. 700 sees Peter Parker being defeated by Doctor Octopus. That wouldn’t be too surprising of an ending as Doctor Octopus is one of Spider-Man’s most well known and longest standing villains. What surprised fans is that Doctor Octopus realizes that Spider-Man was actually a force for good in the world and transfers his mind to Parker’s body to continue on as Spider-Man himself.

The death has proven to be somewhat controversial among fans of the character, and they have been voicing their displeasure to series writer Dan Slott on Twitter. Some fans have even taken to sending death threats to Slott, but others have stood up for the writer by sending him praise and well wishes.

All the complaints won’t stop Slott, however, as he is preparing to launch an entirely new Spider-Man series called The Superior Spider-Man. The series will take on a much darker tone, and could prove interesting to long time fans of the man that can do whatever a spider can.

Just weeks after his alter-ego Clark Kent quit the Daily Planet, Superman is getting help from a real-life astrophysicist to pinpoint the location of his home planet.

In an Action Comics #14 story titled “Star Light, Star Bright,” famous astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson will help Superman find Krypton “on its final day of existence.”

“As a native of Metropolis, I was delighted to help Superman, who has done so much for my city over all these years,” said Tyson. “And it’s clear that if he weren’t a superhero he would have made quite an astrophysicist.”

In real life, Tyson has announced the location of an actual Krypton-like star system. Located in the constellation Corvus and 27.1 light years from Earth lies a star designated LHS 2520 that has a “highly turbulent” red surface, but is cooler and smaller than our Sun. Tyson even provided coordinates for amateur astronomers to follow:

J2000
Right Ascension: 12 hours 10 minutes 5.77 seconds
Declination: -15 degrees 4 minutes 17.9 seconds
Proper Motion: 0.76 arcseconds per year, along 172.94 degrees from due north

“This is a major milestone in the Superman mythos that gives our Super Hero a place in the universe,” said Dan DiDio, DC Entertainment co-publisher. “Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say – ‘that’s where Superman was born’.”

Tyson is also the host of the StarTalk radio program, which will soon become a part of the Nerdist YouTube channel. Among other things, Tyson is famous for complaining about the incorrect depiction of the night sky over the Atlantic ocean at the end of the movie Titanic. Director James Cameron corrected the sky for the Titanic 3-D re-release.

His career as a cartoonist and animator produced work that’s been said to have influenced other high-profile minds in the field like Walt Disney. He’s probably best known for 1914′s Gertie the Dinosaur cartoon and the aforementioned Little Nemo strip.

Today, that’s what Google’s celebrating; the official launch day of the Little Nemo in Slumberland comic – October 15th, 1905. Nemo ran in two separate newspapers, the New York Herald and New York American until 1914. There was a short-lived return to print for Nemo in 1924. The official end date for the strip was 1927.

This time, we find Little Nemo in Google-land. The expansive doodle shows Nemo as he plunges through areas filled with the Google letters. The Doodle requires some user participation, as they are asked to click a tab in order to see Nemo continue his journey.

Head on over to the Google homepage to check out the Doodle or you can watch it play out below:

As recently reported, the new Bill Gates comic from Bluewater Productions is available. Having had a chance to peruse it, I can now offer you a closer look, in case you’ve yet to pick one up.

The comic begins “sometime in the future,” with robots talking to each other in binary code. One of them simply asks, “Creator?” Then, some kind of future computer loads a data package, and begins the presentation – the biography of Bill Gates.

Gates is born at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle. After scenes of Gates playing Monopoly with his sister, and doing a bit of stage acting, we get to Gates befriending Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the two sit unnaturally close to one another:

From there, Gates and Allen start a business, and Gates goes back to school, and takes a DC intern job. Gates goes to Harvard, while Allen drops out of school and moves to Boston. Eventually, the two get back together, do some coding, and create Microsoft.

They then take then expand the company, and take it back to Seattle:

After that, things get really exciting, and the computer industry is changed forever. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, beyond that. You can find the comic in local comic book stores and book stores. The print version is $7.99. It’s also available for Kindle, Nook and iPad.

Bluewater has comics for Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin on the way. You can see the covers here.

Everybody loves superheroes because it lets us suspend our disbelief and wonder – could that really happen? In most cases, the answer is unfortunately no. There’s no way we could accrue the disposable income and rock hard body to become Batman. Likewise, there’s no way we could gain new abilities just by being bitten by a genetically modified spider, or is there?

The latest video from the amazing guys over at AsapSCIENCE look into the possibility of somebody actually becoming Spiderman. It turns out that a lot of it is theoretically possible, but don’t expect to start climbing walls after a spider bite anytime soon.

The main problem stems from the fact that a genetically modified spider doesn’t have the ability to change our DNA on the level seen in the comics or movies. As the video explains, the retrovirus passed on by the spider would have to infect and change every single cell in the human body. That’s a daunting task even for a small amount of change to DNA.

It’s sad to realize that we’ll never be a superhero, but maybe it’s for the best. If superheroes were real, they would have more in common with The Watchmen or Kick-Ass. As we all know, those kind of stories never turn out good for the heroes. Let’s stick to the fantasy of flying through the air attached to an impossibly small string of spider silk. I don’t really feel like becoming a spider pancake today.

Well Kazakhstan native Evgeny Yakovlev has tried his best to answer this question and many more. His artwork is great and might just turn some heads! Go over to his deviant art page and check out all of his other work! Verah Niiice!
I particularly like the one that features Wolverine meeting Edward Scissorhands. Mostly because Edward Scissorhands is one of the weirdest and creepiest movies of all time, but also because all I can imagine is Wolverine going “I’m not your brother bub, but I’ll be your daddy!” Snikt!!!
