Hmmm, Chris Pirillo (founder of Lockergnome and Gnomedex conferences) has been in a bitter, dour, mood lately

A major deal he was working on blew up. We don’t know what happened and he’s not allowed to tell anyone due to lawyers involved (anytime you have to tell your friends lawyers are involved while also being unable to share any of the details you know it’s gotta be bad).

My advice that I gave Chris (I’m best man in his wedding): Follow Munjal Shah. Same thing happened to him – Google decided not to buy his company at the last minute (and, unlike what Valleywag reported it wasn’t my fault, but no use trying to argue about that here and now).

What did Munjal do? Dusted himself off and came out with the best new product of the week (which is saying something because 200 companies competed to be one of 13 on stage yesterday at the Web 2 Summit – Munjal wasn’t one of them, but kicked everyone’s behind).

So, Chris, let’s make next year’s Gnomedex conference the biggest and best ever. What can I do to help?

Interesting. Chris last week was saying he had a “big” secret. No one could figure it out. This week he announces he didn’t move (he was supposed to move to Los Angeles).

Sounds like lots of chaos going on. We’re looking forward to his wedding on December 9th to Ponzi. That is, if THAT doesn’t get moved.

He has me intrigued with his “big” secret, though.

We should have a contest to predict which state he’s moving to. He taunted me last week saying I’d never guess what he’s going to be doing.

Oh, let’s start a really crazy rumor. He’s moving Ponzi to North Carolina so that he can have banana pudding and be Jon Edwards’ press secretary. That’s about the craziest thing I can think of Chris doing.

What’s the craziest thing you can think of him doing?

Chris Pirillo gets the goods on search engine spam with an interview of an anonymous “search spammer” at the New York Search Engine Strategies conference. The voice is decidedly European, possibly German – yes, it’s German.

“At SES Chris interviewed one search spammer who asked to remain nameless while providing some interesting details about the inner workings of the search spamming world. On one hand the interview reveals some of the motivations for spamming the search engines. More interesting are the search spamming tactics these black hat marketers won’t employ because even they are annoyed by the end result.”

Chris asks what kind of search spam? The search spammer responds by describing massive generated content, as in auto-generated content. How? The spammer explains: Take a dictionary and put in a database and run some application on that to output content according to a certain topic. The words are random with a certain percentage of the target keyword along with quotations, commas and periods thrown in, which fools Google into thinking they are sentences. He runs Google AdSense ads on these content sites and that’s how me makes money.

Chris makes a good point, “So Google enables search spammers by allowing AdSense ads on these types of sites?” Chris then says the same thing with eBay. Big companies tolerate a certain amount of spam because it makes them money.

Chris asks if users are negatively affected by all this search spam. Mr Search Spammer responds that because there is such a high clickthrough rate on the ads being run on the auto generated content sites, that users must be finding what they’re looking for (in the ads).

Search spamming is all about the money. Yet there’s a funny moral justifaction in the interview that is worth hearing. Very amusing and concerning at the same time.

Chris also has a good interview with Danny Sullivan and another with Google’s Matt Cutts during SES NYC worth checking out.
