Chris Clark paid $20 to register the domain name back in 1994, hoping it would help his Internet consulting business get a contract with a pizza company. He never received a contract and sold the business in 2000.

He paid the annual $20 registration fees on pizza.com and sold advertising on the site. Later he and a friend made it a profitable pizza directory and advertising site that brought in more than the $5,000 it costs to maintain.

When Clark heard that vodka.com sold for $3 million he decided to see what pizza.com could sell for. "I thought, ‘Why don’t I just try to see what the level of interest is?’" Clark told the Baltimore Sun. "If someone’s willing to pay that much for Vodka.com, maybe there’s more interest in pizza.com."

The online auction started on March 27. The first bid was $100 and a week later it reached $2.6 million. Clark accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder. "It’s crazy, it’s just crazy," Clark said from his home in North Potomac.

"That amount of money is significant. It will make a significant difference in my life, for sure," Clark said.
