How Social Media is Changing Charity

Social media provides a great deal of tools and opportunities for reaching the masses, which makes for some ideal ways of marketing a business. The marketing potential of social media also means great things for charitable causes.

The emergence of social media has opened up a lot of doors for getting messages out there and spread wider than was ever possible before. What better way is there to find people who care about a specific cause and call upon them to take action? You’ve got Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, blogs, and countless other platforms.

As Dow Sinks, Charity Traffic Goes Up
· 2

There’s probably more than one way to interpret Bill Tancer’s chart comparing visits to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) website and visits to charitable sites. At first glance, if you’re an optimist, it’s a shred of evidence to support faith in our better natures.

Googlers Around the World Helping Children
· 1

Google employees in different cities around the world have been doing their best to prove that Google is not evil. Well, I haven’t seen this cited as an official reason, and I like to think that they’re doing it because they care, but different branches of Google are helping children in a variety of capacities this holiday season.

A few search engine marketers have come together to present the SEM Challenge, which is described as a project for the search engine marketing community to use their online skills to make a real difference in the offline world.

The initiative is working with charity organization FORGE, which works with displaced communities in Africa. The challenge itself is to meet their budget gap of $100,000 through a pro-bono SEM campaign designed to increase awareness and donations.

YouTube Channels Charitable for the Holidays

YouTube is pointing to a number of its channels that are getting charitable this holiday season. Well, some are always charitable, but the holiday season tends to bring out the best in many organizations, and the YouTube team thought it would be nice to highlight some of them.

12 for 12,000 Challenge in 2009

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the world around me, around us. When the economy is so bad and much of the future is uncertain, it’s easy to forget that as bad as we have it, there will always be someone worse off. Illness; poverty; hunger; abuse; these and more happen every day to people breathing the same air as us. Which is why I’m setting up the 12 for 12,000 Challenge in 2009.

Google Pushing Charity Through iGoogle Themes
· 2

Keeping within the Holiday spirit, Google is doing something a little more significant than helping track the path of Santa Claus. They’re offering a number of iGoogle themes for causes in an effort to spread awareness and raise donations.

They’re clearly taking it seriously because there is a link to them right from the front page of the search engine, and usually there is not a whole lot of change going on there aside from the occasional doodle.

Virgin Launches Strip2Clothe Charitable Campaign
· 3

When we moved last month, my wife and I toted out 43 garbage bags of clothing we culled from our closets to donate to charity—some garments, a little shamefully, with the tags still on them. I’ll let that act serve as rationale enough for not sending Virgin Mobile a video of myself stripping—although Chris Farley’s got nothing on me as far as moves go.

SMS Based Charity Systems

There are tons of uses for SMS (text messaging); Clickatell recently published a guide to 101 business uses for SMS. I’m still making my way through it, but it’s a great read.

Read/Write Web last week posted a great guide to how SMS is being used for giving.

Google Foundation Financially Well-To-Do

Compound interest can be an amazing thing – money just sort of grows out of whatever amount a person or company originally deposited.  If, for example, an organization started out with $85 million, it could earn a fresh $4 million in a year’s time.  And that appears to be exactly what the Google Foundation did.
