Zach Galifianakis is well-known for his dry comedy, but it turns out he’s got a sweet spot. It turns out the 43-year-old comedian recently saved an older woman from homelessness.

According to a New York Daily News report, Galifianakis befriended a Los Angeles-area laundrywoman named Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist nearly 20 years ago. A few years ago, when Galifianakis learned that the 87-year-old Haist had no place to call home, the Hangover star set her up with a one-bedroom apartment an has been paying her rent.

Now, Galifianakis is even bringing along Haist as his date to Hollywood premieres. Haist was reportedly brought to the premieres of The Hangover Part II and The Campaign, where gawkers wondered whether the woman was Galifianakis’ grandmother. According to the Daily News report, Haist relishes the looks she gets on the red carpet and enjoys martinis at exclusive after-parties.

Time is running out if you want to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a 30-minute coffee date with Apple CEO Tim Cook. Bidding on the charity auction that has drawn significant attention due to its astronomical price tag close tomorrow, Tuesday May 14th.

The current bid is $605,000, and you’ll have to fork up at least $610,000 to top it.

The date first appeared on online charity auction site Charitybuzz back in April, and quickly jumped from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands. Charitybuzz put an estimated price of $50,000 on the sit-down, which will take place at Apple HQ in Cupertino. It surpassed that suggested value in less than 24 hours.

In less than a week, the bids topped $600,000. Charitybuzz was forced to remove a top bid, however, after it was discovered that it was made using a stolen credit card.

In light of that, Charitybuzz has added an extra layer of authentication to placing a bid. Any new bids must now go through additional bank qualification, and you have to contact their customer service to make it happen.

So if you’re ready to top the current $605,000 bid, which has been the top bid for nearly two weeks now, you have about 24 hours to do so. The bidding closes at 4:08 pm ET on Tuesday.

Unless the bidding cools down fast, someone is going to pay millions of dollars for a half-an-hour coffee date with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

We first told you about the charity auction earlier this week. Tim Cook is auctioning off a coffee date at Apple HQ in Cupertino for one lucky bidder and a friend. All of the money will benefit the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights.

When we first told you about it on Wednesday, the current bid was $36,999. Charitybuzz, the site that’s hosting the auction, put an estimated price of $50,000 on the prize. At that point, with 20 days left to go on the bidding, we assumed that it would eventually hit that $50,000 mark.

But this is just bananas. As of the writing of this article, the top bid sits at $580,000. And there’s still 18 days left to go in the auction. The top bid was just over $300,000 this morning. Unless something happens and the bidding just dies, it looks like someone is seriously going to pay millions of dollars for a 30-minute to an hour meeting with Cook.

Just think about it this way: Back in 2011, the top bid for such a prize on Charitybuzz went for face time with former President Bill Clinton. In the end, the top bid was $255,000.

As the bidding goes higher, it’s likely that a companies will be the ones battling it out. Back when the bidding was lower, say a few thousand dollars, individuals were in the mix. Now, the last dozen or so bids have been dominated by companies. For instance, Drbluetooth.com is the current highest bid holder.

We’ll keep our eye on this, but we fully expect the total to be absolutely insane by the time May 14th rolls around.

Apparently, the idea of sitting down and grabbing a cup of coffee is so damn exciting that someone decided to use a stolen credit card to try and make it happen.

I’m sure you’ve been following the escalation of a particular charity auction on the site Charitybuzz – the one that offers a 30 minute to an hour-long coffee date with Apple CEO Tim Cook for the winner and a friend. Tim Cook is giving all of the money generated from the auction to the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. Of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong with auctioning yourself for charity. It’s admirable, actually, and it has the ability to generate a game-changing amount of funding for the center.

The big surprise here is just how much people are willing to bid for the date.

Charitybuzz placed an estimated value of $50,000 on the date, but zealous bidders have eclipsed that mark – and then some. The bid topped $50,000 very quickly, and then exploded as the bidding reached $605,000 by last Friday night. Yep, you read that right. $605,000 for a short break with Tim Cook at Apple HQ in Cupertino.

Well, it turns out, there was something off about that $605,000 bid. Fortune noticed that this morning, the bid had fallen to $600,000. Why did it fall? Was it a glitch?

Nope. Charitybuzz confirmed that the top bid was removed when it was found out that it was placed with a stolen credit card.

But the fact remains, there is a legitimate $600,000 bid that’s currently winning this thing. And there are still 15 days left to go in the auction. To put this all in perspective, Charitybuzz’s previous record for something like this was set back in 2011 when someone paid $255,000 for some time with former President Bill Clinton.

Are you pissed off about something that Apple’s doing? Want to get your iPhone 5 signed? Want to congratulate the head of a major tech company on a job well done?

Well, here’s your chance. Charity auction site Charitybuzz is currently hosting an auction to buy a coffee date with Apple CEO Tim Cook. It is an auction, so there’s no telling how high the price will go, but it is tagged with an estimated value of $50,000. And if you think that there’s no way that goal will be reached – think again. With 20 days left to bid, the bid currently stands at $36,999.

The coffee date will take place at Apple HQ in Cupertino, and the prize is valid for up to 2 people. The coffee date will last between 30 minute and an hour. Travel and accommodations are not included.

It’s all for a good cause, of course. Proceeds will benefit the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights.

“We expect all winning bidders and their guests to conduct themselves appropriately when attending an experience won at Charitybuzz. Polite manners and respect for the generous donor and adherence to any rules or parameters are a must,” says Charitybuzz.

Well, there goes some possibilities. For $50,000, that coffee better be something.

[CharityBuzz via AppleInsider]

Oxford University Fellow Toby Ord recently gave a Google Tech Talk called “How Many Lives Can You Save? — Taking Charity Seriously”. Google has now made the talk available for all to watch via YouTube.

It’s about an hour long, so set aside a bit of time before you begin your viewing.

Here’s the abstract:

People admire doctors and rescue workers and marvel at the possibility of saving someone’s life — something that few of us would ever achieve. And yet at the same time, we routinely hear that for a small sum of money we could save someone’s life in a developing country and this scarcely impacts our behaviour. There is an important disconnect between these two attitudes and it has serious moral implications. I will speak about the evidence which shows that we really can make a tremendous difference by giving, and then explore the moral case for giving much more than we typically do. I will then look at the great disparity in effectiveness between different charities and show how choosing *where* to give can be even more important than the decision to give in the first place.

In a recent list of America’s “Most Generous Donors,” tech comes out very well.

The list comes to us from The Chronicle of Philanthropy, a magazine devoted to tracking to world of nonprofits.

Mark Zuckerberg and his new wife Priscilla Chan rank #2 on the list after donating nearly $500 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Zuckerberg made the donation back in December 2012 in the form of 18 million Facebook shares. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation is a leading philanthropic trust organization in the area. It’s Zuckerberg’s largest single charitable donation to date, having given $100 million to improve public schools in Newark, New Jersey back in 2010.

Their gift of $498.8 million is second only to Warren Buffet, who spread nearly $3.1 billion around Howard G. Buffett Foundation, NoVo Foundation, and the Sherwood Foundation.

In fifth place on the list is Google’s Sergey Brin and his partner Anne Wojcicki, who donated approximately $222.9 million in 2012, most of it to their own Brin Wojcicki Foundation, which supports multiple causes including “education, environment, women’s issues, and many other causes; the Human Rights Foundation; and Tipping Point Community, a nonprofit that seeks to eliminate poverty in Northern California.”

They also made a $32.8 million contribution to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen also broke the top 5, coming in at #4 for his $309.1 million in 2012 donations.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is apparently in the Christmas spirit. A few hours ago, he announced the he was donating a hefty amount to a local charity. That donation is coming in the form of Facebook stock – a boatload of it.

“Today, in order to lay the foundation for new projects, we’ve made a contribution of 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Together, we will look for areas in education and health to focus on next. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to have as positive an impact in our next set of projects,” said the Facebook CEO in a post on Facebook.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation is a philanthropic trust organization, who says that they “provide visionary community leadership by identifying emerging challenges in our region; address those challenges through our grantmaking programs, our research and our ability to bring together diverse groups of problem-solvers; and build and energize a community of philanthropists who strengthen the common good.”

His gift of 18 million shares of Facebook stock is just shy of $499 million considering Facebook’s current share price of $27.71.

“Two years ago, Priscilla and I signed The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of the money we earn to charity. Our first major project has been around education reform with Startup: Education in Newark, NJ. I’m really proud of the work we’ve done there, helping leaders like Governor Chris Christie and Mayor Cory Booker sign the most progressive teachers contract in our country, opening four new district high schools, 11 new charter schools and more,” said Zuckerberg.

The Giving Pledge is a campaign to make sure the richest people in the U.S. give “most of their wealth” to charitable causes. It is spearheaded by Warren Buffet and Bill & Melinda Gates.

The guy that shopped a Powerball ticket earlier this month and duped millions of people into thinking he would split his winnings is finally speaking about the hoax. Nolan Daniels, a software developer, says that he never shared or liked any likebait posts and never asked anyone to – until he logged on to Facebook to see a surprising number of his friends sharing an obvious lottery hoax post.

In a blog post written for The Huffington Post, Daniels explains why he decided to start the now-legendary hoax:

“I myself have never shared or liked anything for that reason and I’ve never asked others to share or like something. Then Nov. 29, 2012, came around and I came home from work and saw people sharing a photo of a man holding a digitally manipulated photo of winning Powerball numbers to the biggest Powerball drawing that was all over the news. In the description he said that a book inspired him to pick the winning numbers and he attached a link to where you could purchase the book.

It was obvious to me that this person was gaining something monetary for sharing that link so people could purchase this book. I was amazed at my friends who were sharing it so I decided to do it myself and see who’d fall for it. I quickly snapped a photo and spent 15 minutes moving the numbers to look like winning numbers. I knew they were out of order and that the remaining winner had a 10-pick ticket, but I also knew that would add to my curiosity of who reads the news and does their research before clicking a button.”

He said that the photo received over 400,000 shares in 18 hours, and over two million within three days. He definitely wasn’t the only one perpetrating a powerball hoax, but he was definitely the most successful.

He also says that the fact that he didn’t try to promote anything with his hoax, and that led to its credibility.

The sad part about this “social experiment” is that he apparently received thousands of messages from people, many of which had sad stories to tell about how they needed the money.

“There are not too many positives that can come from a hoax or scam but hopefully with my story I can try and turn a negative into a positive. A viral hoax can give a person like myself 15 minutes of fame and rather than attempt to exploit or profit from the situation, I can instead try to help a stranger,” he says.

With that in mind, he’s using his 15 minutes to raise money for one of the people that sent him a private message, a mother with a 6-figure medical debt.

All forgiven? A harmless social experiment? Douchebag move? What do you think?
