You can watch the elections on YouTube tonight if that is your preferred video hub or if you’re not near a television (though you can still watch them there from your TV if it’s connected). At 9PM, the CBS YouTube channel will stream the results live.

"It’s been a memorable campaign season on YouTube, but the time for persuasion and debate is over — now it’s time to vote," writes Ramya Raghavan of YouTube News and Politics on the company blog. "As polling results come in from across the country, we’re partnering with CBS News to live stream election results and highlight election trends on YouTube and Google."

"Already, CBS has been highlighting election trends through data from Google and YouTube platforms," notes Raghavan. "In addition to analyzing the top political videos on YouTube, they’re watching Google Trends and Insights for Search to determine what people are searching for and watching online. This approach of examining web trends adds a new level of depth to election reporting and is a model that news organizations can use for any major event or milestone."

9 out of the top 10 searches on Google today have been election-related, according to the company. Google itself is providing other tools to help users follow the elections and to find where to vote.

In fact, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are doing their parts as well. Here you can see what Twitter is doing, and here are Facebook’s offerings. Chances are if you use Facebook, you’ve already seen some of them today.

CBS is taking feedback and ideas via Google Moderator from their channel. The top submissions have a chance to make it on the air.

Sporting a Digg t-shirt from her CBS News office chair, anchor Katie Couric addressed Digg.com from YouTube. She prodded the geek-chic crowd there for questions to ask at the Democratic National Convention.

Take a moment. Let that set in.

Now, think back 20 years (that’s 1988!), crawl into your own head, turn off the White Snake and look around at the world you knew then. On the TV, on CBS, is Dan Rather, likely talking about the Vice President’s run against a diminutive and generally unexciting Michael Dukakis. The Summer Olympics are on, there are tensions with Russia, especially regarding a small Soviet state asserting its independence, and in the midst of a major banking crisis Dan Quayle is comparing himself to John F. Kennedy.

A lot has changed in 20 years, huh? Well, if you can’t pinpoint exactly how it’s changed, refer to the introduction to this article. In that 1988 world (hey, nice boom box—is that a mix tape?), could it ever include you in your Thundercats boxers positing a question to Vice President of the United States of America George H.W. Bush, care of Dan Rather?

Um, yeah, so Dan (nom, nom, nom on a Fruit Rollup), ask Bush if he’s buying this whole Perestroika thing Gorbachev is selling—And what’s with that birthmark anyway? Oh, and tell him I bet Quayle can’t even spell Kennedy.

No. No way that could have happened in my 1988. In 2008, we have YouTube and we have Digg, and this time—so long as Couric doesn’t pull a CNN move and yank the tough questions ahead of time—we, the people, have more direct access to a government that has far outgrown us. It’s kind of beautiful, don’t you think?

Digg seems to be taking the invitation seriously, unlike the commentators at YouTube, who, in this instance, represent the dark side of Web 2.0—nothing like a little misogyny flavored with masturbatory anchorwoman-in-a-Digg-shirt fantasies.

Ahem, back to Digg, where things are uncharacteristically mature: Ask McCain why he feels the Iraq war is still justified. Ask Obama why he’s not a fan of global free trade. Ask Katie if she’d like to have dinner.

Well, you didn’t expect the brow to remain quite so high, did you? They also want to know how the candidates feel about Net Neutrality, about whether the Republican Party has been hijacked by big government, corporation-loving neocons, about the abandonment of the No Child Left Behind Act, about healthcare, marriage, taxes, torture and spying, and about exactly when the candidates feel it is justified to lie to the American public.

And yes, where, Katie, did you get that awesome t-shirt?

You gotta admit those are decent questions pumping out of the oft-maligned "wisdom of the crowds." Perhaps even better than "Where’s your flag pin?" or "Are you sure you’re not a radical Muslim bent on destroying America?"

Take a peek at CBSNews.com’s political site. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Look down toward the lower right side of the page.

See that? It’s Digg, and a selection of stories receiving a lot of votes from the Digg user community’s 2008 US Elections page. Here’s the current ‘headlines’ from Digg on CBSNews.com:

The emailed reply, which came from Evening@cbsnews.com, implied Errol Siegel of Austin, Texas, who’s in the email security business, was unintelligent and the author of it devalued information found on blogs.

Initially, CBS would not confirm that the email came from within CBS, but IP tracking revealed that it had come from inside CBS’s New York headquarters.

After the news broke, Mr. Siegel pursued CBS further, seeking public confirmation of the email, an apology, and clarification of CBS’s position on blogs and those that read and contribute to them.

Mr. Siegel says Linda Mason, Senior Vice President of Special Projects for CBS News Corporation, issued him this statement:

"Thank you for contacting us directly about the confusion over the source of an email you were sent in response to your thoughts on the CBS EVENING NEWS in the Mid-East. On behalf of CBS News, I want to confirm to you that the email reply you received did come from someone at CBS. The identity of that person is being investigated and the matter is being taken very seriously.

"Let me also note that CBS News has its own blog, Public Eye, where we encourage viewer input. We also read responses on Evening.CBSNews.com. We welcome a dialogue with the public and we are very sorry you received the response you did, but we thank you for calling it to our attention so we can correct the situation."

(Editor’s Note: WPN writer Mike Sachoff confirmed Ms. Mason’s statement to Mr. Siegel after this reporter’s request for comment was rebuffed by a CBS mailserver. An automated response to the first request, from this reporter’s personal email address, indicated the address has been placed into a blacklist on that mailserver.)

Yahoo News and CBS News blurred the few remaining lines between traditional and Internet media with their announcement. CBS has been very aggressive at moving into digital distribution of their news content, and signing on with Yahoo gives the network exposure to the Internet’s largest news audience.

Although 16 cities out of the whole US does not sound like a lot, virtually all of these cities represent major media markets. Eleven of the sixteen cities ranked in the top 20 in Nielsen’s list of designated market areas for 2005-2006:

Yahoo! News users will have access to 10 to 20 local news video stories per day, from each of the 16 markets. The company said video includes breaking news stories, as well as other locally-focused features and reports.

“Finding new platforms to distribute and monetize our industry-leading content has always been a core strategic initiative of our company, and this deal accomplishes both,” said Jonathan Leess, President, CBS Television Stations Digital Media Group.

In 1982, William Gibson’s short story Burning Chrome first mentioned Tally Isham, the celebrity with the Zeiss Ikon eyes who could be found in the world of cyberspace. In 2006, Katie Couric may be the first widely-known celebrity to exist on the Internet.

When Couric takes over the CBS Evening News desk, her visage will not be limited to the cold fire of the television screen. Instead, CBS executives Sean McManus and Larry Kramer will propel Couric into the Matrix, as they continue their proactive course to be the news brand on broadband.

CBS disclosed in a statement that when Couric takes her place at the anchor desk on September 5th at 6:30 pm ET, the network will simulcast her TV broadcast online. They also have other plans for the Evening News online:

In addition to the live simulcast, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric will also be available in two other ways. The complete broadcast may be viewed as an on-demand program any time after the live simulcast or, as has been the case for the past several years, viewers may build their own broadcast by choosing individual reports from each CBS Evening News program.

With apologies to the fine video podcasters at places like Diggnation and Rocket Boom, Couric is on an entirely different level when it comes to celebrity and recognition. Couple that with the broad reach envisioned by CBS for their star anchor:

“Viewers can now see the CBS EVENING NEWS live, as never before,” said McManus. “This is a groundbreaking development in making the program available to the largest possible audience. For people who can’t be in front of their televisions when the EVENING NEWS is on, they can now watch the program live on their computers. It’s another giant step towards providing CBS News content to people wherever they are — in their homes, in their offices, in their cars, on their computers or on their cell phones.”

In realizing McManus’s vision, it may someday be easier to count the places where one cannot find Couric and CBS, instead of where one can.
