Yes, you’re right. Delicious looks different. Scrumptious, even.

With over 150 million links tucked away in its index, room for improvement existed. Yahoo announced that today, noting how the site now resides on a new platform, with the usual plaudits for increasing speed and performance.

On the search functionality side, Delicious picked up options for people to focus their queries to a friend’s links, or to the broader social network they have grown over time.

Google Reader now reports feed usage, and it is being suggested by a prominent Google engineer that you should look at aggregated numbers.
Danny has gone into what many of the numbers mean, but he is missing out on some vital clues that are extremely revealing.

First up, for those counting stats such as Darren Rowse, Robert Scoble and Techcrunch here are my numbers.

Google Reader is currently showing 3 different feeds that are all providing the same content, which you might think would be better served as a single number as appears in Feedburner.
Hopefully that will never, ever happen, as those split numbers are incredibly useful.

Why Are There Split Numbers?

It is vital to understand why split numbers occur to fully appreciate how useful this is.

There are 3 main ways people subscribe to your RSS feeds using Google Reader.

Using A Subscription Button

My subscription buttons point to andybeard.eu/feed/ and this is the URL used by feed readers to collect my feed, even though that redirects to Feedburner using the Feedsmith plugin.

Autodiscovery

This is that little orange icon that appears in your browser alongside the URL for RSS subscription. It is handled in different ways by various feed readers. Google Reader evaluates any redirect before you actually subscribe, thus you end up at feeds.feedburner.com/Exploring-Niche-Websites before making a decision. Historically speaking this isn’t a very good thing to happen, because as a feed publisher you "lose ownership" in some ways of those subscribers, as they are not subscribing to a page on your site that can be moved to somewhere else.

Javascript Bookmark

This again uses the autodiscovery URL in the header of your blog, but for some reason, maybe my own oversight or mistake my autodiscovery URL is andybeard.eu/feed – notice this URL doesn’t have a trailing slash.

RSS Feed Subscription – Evaluation

This is where we gain a unique perspective on Feed Subscription

580 people are subscribed to http://andybeard.eu/feed/ – those people used a subscription button to subscribe to my feed.

196 people are subscribed to http://feeds.feedburner.com/Exploring-Niche-Websites – those are either very long-time subscribers from my time on blogspot, or they used RSS Autodiscovery to subscribe using Google Reader

146 people are subscribed to http://andybeard.eu/feed – those people most likely used a javascript based subscription button in Firefox to subscribe to my feed.

Now if you are very smart, you could use this method to split test subscription methods, and rely on Feedburner for your aggregate data.

This isn’t an attempt to get on a list of SEO blogs or back-slapping.

In this post I am trying to highlight some unique information that no one has ever revealed before, and could be extremely useful.

This isn’t the same as tracking RSS subscriptions, in many ways it is better because the tracking only gives you a click on a button, and doesn’t give you anything from autodiscovery, losing half of the data.

I for one hope Google doesn’t "fix" this "problem" with aggregated feeds, because it could prove to be very useful.

Oh we love the links and then some here at TopRank. Old school online marketer Larry Chase published a few more link building tips and resources in his most recent Web Digest for Marketers newsletter. I’ve added a few of my own comments:

Widget Linking - The RSS Buttons and Social Bookmark tools that TopRank’s Thomas McMahon created serve as excellent widget linking examples. Widgets were hot back in the late nineties when Angelfire and Geocities were the rage in personal web sites. What’s old has become new again.

Content Keyword Tagging – Using tags with social bookmarking, ala del.icio.us, can be a very effective way to organize resources on the web. Tags do not offer the same kind of structure as category based organization, but that’s what makes them so useful. Also, many of the social bookmark services such as Furl.net create a copy and crawlable links when you save a bookmark.

Social Media Linking – Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon get most of the attention these days and can drive a signficant amount of traffic if your news hits a home run. What many marketers don’t realize is that there is often far more valuable traffic (links and conversions) from sites that mashup social news RSS feeds, or sites that mine social news for story ideas rather than from the social news sites directly.

Mapping Link Hubs and Tag Neighborhoods – Find out who’s linking to like minded sites and your competition and you may find some great link opportunities for yourself. Hubfinder anyone?

PDF Linking – Most SEO’s embed links in PDF files, but how many are adding meta data? Especially popular with business to business services, PDF files offer a great opportunity for visibility with buyers researching large scale purchases.

Blog Optimization - There are no optimization suggestions per se, but Stephan Spencer’s Scatterings blog is deservedly pointed out as a good resource on blog optimization. Personally, I like to search Google for “blog optimization” and marvel at the #1 listing. Oh, that’s bad.

Link Analytics – There are a variety of link research tools that can be used to research new link opportunities, value links, check anchor text and target .edu and .gov link sources.

Press Release Optimization – Yeah, we know a few things about press release optimization around here! The real value is when releases get picked up by other web sites with links back to your company. Greg Jarboe and Jamie O’Donnel along with SiteLab have creating an interesting tool for optimizing releases called newsforce, which we’ve reviewed here in the past.

Content Repurposing – Article repositories and submission sites have lost their luster in the past year due to duplicate content issues, but certain kinds of content travels better than others this way, so it can still be a useful tactic.

Paid Inclusion – Not as much of a player these days, there are still ways to buy your way into certain channels such as the Yahoo Search Submit program.

Content Syndication – Basically, publishing a RSS feed allows your content to travel more easily, whether it’s in a RSS reader or when it gets syndicated to another web site. In some situations, duplicate content issues might occur as with article submissions, but there’s still abundant link benefits from having a RSS feed.

Link Insider Tools – Yahoo Site Explorer offers a handy way to detecting inbound links to a domain or web page. Google Webmaster Central also offers useful information on inbound links.

Larry includes quite a few links to various tools so be sure to view the current issue of WDFM here.

I’m probably a typical web user. Whenever I see a website page or a blog post that has something interesting, I’ll bookmark it in Firefox (or add it to favorites in Internet Explorer).

That’s the traditional way of keeping track of content out there you want to refer to again.

What if you want to share your bookmarks? Not easy with a standard Firefox or IE installation without add-ins or plug-ins. And adding links in two separate browsers is a real pain.

That’s where del.icio.us comes in.

If you’re a del.icio.us and Firefox user, you’ll love what’s new with this social bookmarking service. Take a look at this screenshot of my del.icio.us account page:

Notice the left hand sidebar – your tags and your bookmarks of everything you’ve posted to your del.icio.us account. Similar to Firefox so far (well, except the tags).

Now look at the top of the screenshot and notice some new icons next to the address bar – one marked ‘tag’ and the other the del.icio.us logo – as well as a new del.icio.us toolbar above the Google one.

That’s where this gets really interesting and extremely useful.

The folks at del.icio.us have just made your bookmarking and tagging far more useful by integrating Firefox and del.icio.us through a new plug-in.

So instead of having your Firefox bookmarks and a separate set of sharable bookmarks on del.icio.us, you can combine the two into a single set of bookmarks at del.icio.us which you can choose to share or not. Plus you can access those bookmarks from any computer connected to the net, using any browser.

Of course, you don’t have to integrate your Firefox bookmarks – you can install the plug-in and still keep things separate. I can see where you might want to do this, eg, if you have things like online banking or other sensitive links in your Firefox bookmarks.

The good news is you can be selective re which Firefox bookmarks you integrate with del.icio.us, so removing any concerns about your sensitive links.

Once you have things set up at del.icio.us, you can then manipulate the links and how they’re displayed. Sort in alphabetical order. Sort your tags the same way or entirely differently. Other options to help you efficiently manage your links. You can export them and save a backup file on your computer.

This is a terrific tool! For me, it also means that finally I will get to use del.icio.us far more extensively than I have to date. Be better organized. No more adding to static bookmarks.

If you’re not yet a del.icio.us user, this will surely tempt you and bring you into the world of tagging and sharing the content you find valuable.

Give it a whirl.

[Edit] One thing I didn’t spot until just now – a new menu item in Firefox squeezed between ‘History’ and ‘Bookmarks’ that shows all your del.iciou.us content just like the traditional Firefox bookmarks list, but also with a choice that displays all your content by their tags.

From here, you can also manage your deli.icio.us network, your subscriptions, import bookmarks, and a bunch of other things.

Oh this is so useful!

I admittedly hadn’t heard of Touch Clarity before, but web analytics powerhouse Omniture has announced that they purchased them for $51.5 million (plus approximately $8.5 million in assumed vested stock options).

What does Touch Clarity do?

Touch Clarity, headquartered in London, England, provides technology that uniquely combines the most sophisticated advancements in real-time predictive modeling, data mining and machine learning via the on-demand, software-as-a-service model.

Well, that’s not entirely clear, but it’s also summarized as automated behavioral targeting. It looks like combined with Omniture’s web analytics platform they hope to automate a lot of the manual work in behavioral targeting combined with being able to see your results in Omniture’s web analytics.

After having Problogger.net’s – Darren Rowse on my show and Matt Mullenweg (wordpress creator) on the show last week I thought I would keep with the blog theme and share my favorite tricks and plugins that I do with my blog.

Favorite Plugins

Akismet: Do I really have to say anything? Its already caught almost 70,000 spams for me. I used to spend so much time weeding out spam emails . anyway akismet is the bomb.com

Bookmark Me: To Be honest I am probably going to dump this one in the next shoemoney.com revision (which should take place in the next few weeks). After using crazyegg on my blog for a while I hardly EVER see anyone use anything other then the delicious button so I think I am going to focus more on del.icio.us and my RSS. It is cool though and easy to implement.

Brian’s Threaded Comments – This is by far my favorite fun plugin. Its what lets me respond inline to others comments and also lets visitors do the same. It inspires conversation on your blog almost like a forum. Very Cool.

Comment Karma – This is what lets you vote (digg look alike) on comments. I am not sure if I will keep this plugin going. My original intent was to make it so I could display the most liked commenter ala weblogsinc but Its looking like I might just write my own custom plugin for that but for now this one is letting me know atleast people might like something like that.

Democracy – This is a new plugin that I am really liking. It is a poll plugin that lets you display polls in posts and also in your sidebar. It also has options so you can show archives of polls and archive/increment them. It is also extremely customizable and easy to implement.

Digg This: This plugin is what makes the little digg icons on my site. Basically when someone comes to the url from digg it automatically detects the url and adds the button. This is really nice cause you dont need to keep track when someone diggs your posts.

podPress – This is the BOMB if you are going to do anything with media. even word/pdf files to video you MUST get this plugin if your doing anything with media at all. It also provides easy inclusion and feeds for Itunes.

Favorite Trick – WordPress Title

This post was inspired by First Page Fitness

WordPress Title – there is a function in wordpress it looks like this – wp_title() If you look at your theme you will see it. Its probably there in the title tag and other stuff. What you may not realize is that you can give this function 2 arguments.

wp_title() by itself defaults to wp_title($sep = ‘& raquo;, $display = true)

For non h40rs – the & raquo; is what gives you the >> before each post. That is why you see that so much on every wordpress blog at the begniging of the title is because that is the default. The second part and this is more geekier says to display the page title (true) or return it for use in PHP (false) lets not worry about the second part.

So what fun can we have with this? Well lets say the title of the blog post was “Apple Iphone Is Cool”. Now by default if someone went directly to your post it would look like:

>> Apple iPhone is Cool

If we want nothing infront of the title then we just send a null string like wp_title(“”,”False”) That would make it look like:

Apple iPhone is cool

Basically anything you put in the first set of quotes is going to lead your title. Good luck and have fun..

Comments

Bookmark WebProNews:

Years ago I found myself on unemployment and in debt but with many service oriented websites. Determined never to work for “the man” again over the next several years I learned how to monetize those websites through donation, subscription, direct sales, contextual advertising and affiliate advertising. People say that I have a knack for seeing marketing angles that most people do not. I work hard, party hard, and have a relentless work ethic when something catches my interest.

Dave Winer says we’ll know Web 2.0′s bubble is popped when Google’s stock crashes.

So, what’s the chances of that happening? Well, here in Wales, I see hundreds of businesses, nearly none of them are on Google. Despite the fact that the local population says they use Google.

Translation: Google’s growth isn’t close to being done yet. Particularly internationally.

Will Barons prove right? I don’t know. I still remember all the pundits saying “Apple is dead.” Or, talk to Robert Hess. When he started working at Microsoft about 18 years ago his coworkers told him to sell Microsoft, thinking there was no possible way for the stock to go up more than it already had (remember, back in the 1980s Microsoft was in the same place that Google is today).

I see nothing that’ll stop Google. Do you?

Or, if you do think Google is overrated, what do you think will pop its bubble?

Some things we’ll watch for: growth slowing. That’ll tell us that Google doesn’t have what it takes to get all these businesses on board.

Chris Sacca, head of special initiatives at Google, told an event at Oxford University’s Said Business School that “we’ve been getting notes from some of the telco carriers who are saying look, you need to stop our customers from downloading this thing’.”

If only Alta Vista had thought to ask Google not to start a search engine, they might still be in business.

“Look, Larry, you and Sergey have created this new search engine and it’s simply taking away our user-base. You need to pull the plug on Google or else!”

Whether Google uses meta keywords tag or not, has always been a confusion. However, Google’s Vanessa Fox recommends using meta description tag for each page

Vanessa in response to indexing issue at Google Groups wrote:

“Looking at your site in the search results, it appears that your pages would be well served by meta description tags. For most queries, the generated snippet is based on where the query terms are found on the page, and in those cases, your results are fine. But for some more generic queries, where a logical snippet isn’t found in the text, the generated snippet seems to be coming from the first bits of text from the page – in this case, boilerplate navigation that is the same for every page.”

According to Vanessa, a meta description tag for each page facilitates Google to determine the uniqueness of the page. Otherwise, Google uses first few words appearing at the top of the page.
