What happens when the BBC tracks down an Internet troll? Pure hilarity.

Now trolling is never nice, but to film the tracking of an Internet troll like it was “To Catch a Predator” is just odd. It’s obvious that trolls use the anonymity of the Internet to attack people they don’t know to make themselves feel superior. It’s the bullying of the Internet era. Does it make it right? No. Does it make entertaining television? It sure does.

Check out the clip from the episode below where they confront the confirmed troll in public as he is getting onto a bus. The reporter tries to convince the man that what he is doing is hurtful to others and the troll just responds, “It ain’t illegal.” That’s pure comic gold, dear readers.

We don’t condone trolling at WebProNews, but for it to be taken so seriously just boggles the mind. Enjoy.

Twitter’s growth in popularity over the last few years has seen it expand into a market its creaters never foresaw: breaking news. The real-time, rapid-fire nature of Twitter, combined with its high level of mobility makes Twitter perfect for breaking news stories as they’re happening. Heck, I knew about the deaths of Michael Jackson, Osama Bin Laden, and Steve Jobs from Twitter well before I learned about them from mainstream media sources.

So thoroughly has Twitter penetrated the news world that nearly every news organization has a Twitter feed. Many post news as its happening, and only pause to write up stories to post on the web after breaking the initial story.

The BBC, however, have just released fresh guidelines meant to ensure that breaking news hits the BBC’s network before its journalists post to Twitter. According to a note posted this morning on the BBC’s website, the BBC wants to make sure their journalists get breaking stories into the hands of the their colleagues in the newsroom before putting them out on Twitter. While they acknowledge the value of Twitter as a way of both gathering news and publishing their own content, they insist that “our first priority remains ensuring that important information reaches BBC colleagues, and thus all our audiences, as quickly as possible – and certainly not after it reaches Twitter.”

What do you think? Is the BBC right to prefer more traditional methods of handling breaking news? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Amazon announced some new TV streaming deals for its LoveFilm product.

After owning 42% of the company, Amazon acquired the remaining shares of LoveFilm, a European Netflix-like company, last year. Since then, the company has been making deals to expand the service’s streaming catalog.

Last month, Amazon signed a multi-year agreement with Sony to give members exclusive streaming access to new and forthcoming Sony Pictures TV and film titles. Other recent deals were made with Warner Bros., Entertainment One, StudioCanal, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate.

Today, Amazon announced deals with BBC Worldwide and ITV.

The BBC deal will give members streaming access to content like Doctor Who, Life On Mars, Spooks, Whitechapel, Planet Earth, and plenty of other shows and documentaries.

Lisa Rousseau, Head of UK and Ireland, Sales & Distribution, BBC Worldwide added, “We’ve had a content partnership with LOVEFiLM for several years now and it’s great to see this evolve digitally. We’re delighted to give LoveFilm’s subscribers the opportunity to instantly watch their favourite British shows, wherever and whenever they wish, alongside a diverse range of great programmes and films.”

The ITV deal gives LoveFilm members streaming access to titles from the the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, including Marchlands, Above Suspicion, Prime Suspect, Inspector Morse, Cold Feet, and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Doctor Who has been a fixture of British television since the 1960s. Though the first episode aired to dismal ratings, that was because of its aired on November 23, 1963, the day after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The episode aired again a week later, however, and from there the show took off in popularity. It ran for 26 seasons and saw eight men take up the title role of the Doctor (whose surname is not “Who”) before being taken off the air in 1989. A sixteen-year hiatus was interrupted only by a made-for-TV movie in 1996. The show returned to the air in 2005, and has run for six more seasons. During that time it has consistently been one of the BBC’s top rated programs.

New fans often find the show daunting. Nearly fifty years of history can seem like a lot to wade into. Now, just in time for this year’s Christmas Special – “The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe” airs on BBC and BBC America on Christmas Day – CableTV.com has published a handy infographic. The chart, fortunately neither wibbly-wobbly nor timey-wimey, provides a comprehensive Doctor Who timeline, beginning with the very first adventure, 1963’s “An Unearthly Child,” and bringing us all the way up to the present. Check it out below, then let us know what you think in the comments.

The BBC has announced that their popular iPlayer app has come to the iPhone today. The free app allows access to live streaming of the BBC’s television and radio programming, as well as a significant archive of BBC’s older content, in some cases going back to the 1960s. Users can stream content to their phones whether they are on a wifi network or their carrier’s 3G data network, and the app is designed to adjust picture quality automatically depending on the user’s 3G signal strength.

Along with the release of the iPhone app, the iPad version receives an update today allowing it to stream over 3G data networks as well. An update for the Android app is also in the works, though the new version will continue to only stream over wifi.

The original app debuted in Britain in February, followed in July by the launch of a global version of the app in eleven countries, including France, Germany, Italy, and Ireland, with promises that Australia, Canada, and the US would follow by the end of the year. The app became available in Australia in September and Canada last week, but has still not come to America.

The iPlayer service launched several years ago and has become immensely popular in Britain, where iPlayer viewership has come to represent a significant percentage of total viewers, particularly of the network’s more popular shows like Doctor Who and Top Gear. The global app allows users access to all the same content as the British version, but for a fee. While British users’ viewing is covered by their country’s television license fee, users in other countries are required to pay a fee, either monthly or annually, to access the content.

Despite whether or not anyone from Facebook truly sees Google+ as a threat, or if anyone at Google even has it in their mind that the new social network is in direct competition with the veteran service – it’s always interesting to hear one side talk about the other.

In the area of Mark Zuckerberg talking about Google+, we haven’t really had a lot of work with. A couple of weeks ago, Zuckerberg told Charlie Rose that Google was building “it’s own little Facebook.” Google’s Bradley Horowitz later fired back that they were “delighted to be underestimated.” Hardcore, right? This type of intense combat can only happen in the high-stakes world of social media.

Now, we get another soundbite from Zuckerberg on Google+. This one comes from a BBC profile that aired on Sunday, where Facebook’s CEO was asked if he sees Google+ as a threat. Here’s the response:

Yeah Google’s a great company and I think we want to look at and learn from everything that they do. But at the same time, people have shared a lot on Facebook and have already told a lot of their life story on Facebook. And we think that we have by far better tools for doing that.

In that short answer, Zuckerberg outlines the main reason why Google+ would fight an almost impossibly uphill battle in directly challenging Facebook on pure, standalone social grounds: Facebook is just too engrained in everything that people do online. It’s been on the block for so long that it’s nearly impossible for people to disconnect their online (and sometimes real-life) presence from the site. Google+ is undeniably late to the party.

But of course, Google is not even trying to topple the mighty giant, if you listen to Google. They have been hammering home the “Google+ is Google” mantra for the past few months. The aforementioned Horowitz recently said that “Google+ is not a siloed product. It is not divorced from the rest of Google, instead it is a new way of using all the Google services that you know and love.”

Or think of it this way: Google says they don’t want Google+ to be a standalone site – just somewhere you go to be on a social network.

“It is a platform which allows us to bring social elements into all the services and products that we offer. So you have seen YouTube come into Google+; you’ve seen Google+ with ‘direct connect’ go into our search business. We are trying to make sure we use social signals across all of our products… It’s not just about getting people together on one site and calling it a social network,” said CBO Nikesh Arora earlier this month.

Google might have a different strategy for Google+ than simply replacing Facebook, but when you think about how much influence Google yields over the web, you can’t imagine that Mark Zuckerberg lets their social initiative stray too far from his mind.

[We previously had the entire interview embedded from YouTube, but it has since been yanked due to copyright claims from the BBC. Those of you in the UK can watch it on the BBC site]

Well, kind of, anyway. Radiohead, the band that is single-handedly trying to change the way business is conducted in the music industry, will be performing their new album, King of Limbs on Nigel Godrich’s In The Basement. Because In The Basement is a web broadcast, the rights to Radiohead’s performance were needed before the broadcast was announced.

The studio-live performance will be broadcast by the BCC, which revealed its intentions at the BBC Worldwide website. According to their statement, the performance will be available to broadcasters in June, but is embargoed until July, 1st. As indicated, Radiohead’s performance will be courtesy of the In The Basement series, a web-only program that has featured such artists as The White Stripes, Gnarls Barkley, Beck, and P.J. Harvey.

As for the Radiohead portion, the King of Limbs performance will be a live, in-studio performance, lasting for 55 minutes. The performance will be filmed in hi-definition, and is expected to be broadcast around the world. Of the partnership, the BBC offers:

Salim Mukaddam, VP Music Television at BBC Worldwide said, “It is a real honour to be working with Radiohead on this project. Radiohead are a band that rarely performs for television, but when they do, it’s a moment to savour. There is already huge anticipation for this performance and we’re delighted that they’ve decided to work with us at BBC Worldwide, confirming our position as market leaders in Music Television. As a fan I cannot wait to see these beautiful songs brought to life in this programme.”

As for Radiohead, it’s not their first time performing for In The Basement. There is, of course, video of their 2009 set:

The fact that the entire 43 minutes are available on one video has be considered a bonus, especially when you see how something like Bitches Brew is broken up into multiple offerings.

The BBC said today it has launched its first ever custom food app in Google’s Chrome Web Store.

The free app called Good Food, allows users to download over a 160 healthy recipes. The app can be used both online and offline. People can find recipes by using Today’s Pics’, selecting a category, Less than 200 Calories and Healthy Classics, or by using the Advanced Search. The app also features short videos on how to prepare different types of food.

"The BBC has been tremendously successful on the web and mobile around its food brand and we’re really confident that cooks are going to love our latest digital package of recipes,” said Simon Hutson, Director of Digital Development, BBC Worldwide.

“The mouthwatering photography and triple-tested instructions should make the app a go-to destination for new and experienced cooks.”

All recipes are available in U.S. measurements. The app specializes in a line-up of international cuisine that includes Moussaka, Sticky Lemon Chicken, Shrimp Curry in a Hurry, Steak & Kidney Pie and Mexican Chili Burgers.

The iPlayer, which is a popular video-on-demand service offered by the BBC in the UK, is getting a lot more social. A new beta version ties into both Facebook and Twitter (for starters), offering users the option to let friends know what they're viewing and recommend different shows.
This integration was accomplished through the creation of a new login called a BBC iD, and it's supposed to offer a bit beyond the standard click-here-go-there functionality, effectively creating a "social recommendation ecosystem."

The iPlayer, which is a popular video-on-demand service offered by the BBC in the UK, is getting a lot more social. A new beta version ties into both Facebook and Twitter (for starters), offering users the option to let friends know what they’re viewing and recommend different shows.

This integration was accomplished through the creation of a new login called a BBC iD, and it’s supposed to offer a bit beyond the standard click-here-go-there functionality, effectively creating a "social recommendation ecosystem."

A post on the BBC Internet Blog explained, "[U]sers can then connect with Facebook, Twitter or any other social network that we choose to partner with in the future, . . . Basically, we use your external social graph to connect you with your friends within the iPlayer site, and make it scalable for other BBC Online services in the fullness of time."

A whole lot of people will probably take advantage of this solution. Facebook and Twitter are well-liked, of course, and since the iPlayer acts as a window to fun shows like Top Gear and Doctor Who, it also sees quite a lot of use. Combining everything seems like a natural step.

Anyway, other new iPlayer features include a fancy "Favourites" feature, improved inter-device communication, and the option to sync a program’s playback among a group of friends.
