Sinbad, the popular ’90s comedian and sitcom star, is reportedly into the IRS for some major money, and filed for bankruptcy in April

The 53-year old actor allegedly owes more than $8 million to the IRS and several hundred thousand to various creditors, but can only claim about $131,000 in assets. He was forced to put his Hidden Hills estate up for sale a while back in an effort to pay down his debts, and this is the second time he’s filed for bankruptcy. According to court documents, he brings in about $16,000 a month and simply can’t keep up with his bills.

Sinbad isn’t the only celebrity plagued by money problems; last year, “CSI” star Gary Dourdan filed for bankruptcy to get out of credit card debt. Wesley Snipes has also gone to court.

Maybe Sinbad can reprise his guest-starring role on “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” and make some quick cash.

Oreck Corporation, the vacuum cleaner and air purifier manufacturer, has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Tennessee company announced the bankruptcy on its website, stating that it will be consolidating its assets and restructuring as a part of the move. The bankruptcy, Oreck stated, is meant to help get the company in shape for a sale in the near future. The bankruptcy will be overseen by a bankruptcy judge in Nashville, Tennessee.

Oreck emphasized in its statement that its day-to-day operations will continue as normal. Retailers can continue to sell Oreck products as usual. From the company’s statement:

Oreck will continue to operate in the ordinary course of business while the sale process takes place, with authorized and exclusive dealers and other trade customers continuing to receive product for sale to ultimate consumers. It is anticipated that following the closing of the sale that plant operations and corporate headquarters will remain in Tennessee.

Oreck was founded in 1963 by David Oreck shortly after he left electronics company RCA. The company was originally a vacuum manufacturer for U.S. hotels, and Oreck claims today that more than 50,000 hotels around the world use its vacuum cleaners. The machines gained popularity among hotels for their light weight.

Casey Anthony, the woman acquitted of the murder of her daughter, Caylee Anthony, in 2011, today arrived at a federal courthouse in Florida to attend a bankruptcy hearing. As soon as she stepped from her car, she was swarmed by cameramen and microphones. Anthony wore large sunglasses and was escorted through the paparazzi by her lawyer, Cheney Mason.

One extremely confrontational reporter can be heard saying, “Did you get away with murder Casey?” and ” Do you think you’d be better off if you pay a price?”

Anthony was arriving at the courthouse for a bankruptcy hearing. She claims debts of almost $800,000, and recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. During the hearing, Anthony is expected to be questioned by a bankruptcy trustee and her creditors about her finances. She will also be asked questions about how she has been supporting herself in the past months.

Reports hold that Anthony has not held a job since the murder trial in 2011. During that time she has secluded herself in hiding, only occasionally being glimpsed in online videos. Today was the first time since the trial that she has appeared in public.

Casey Anthony, the woman famously acquitted of the murder of her daughter, Caylee Anthony, is back in a Florida courtroom, this time to face a bankruptcy case. Anthony has been in hiding since the end of the trial, appearing only occasionally in videos posted online.

Anthony’s debts stem from the 2011 murder trial and fines levied against her for lying to police about the whereabouts of her daughter. She recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, claiming she is almost $800,000 in debt.

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that during today’s bankruptcy hearing Anthony will answer questions from a bankruptcy trustee and her creditors about her finances.

Anthony has been unemployed since the end of the murder trial in July 2011. Part of today’s questioning will concern who has been supporting her since that time. Also, rumors of a book deal for Anthony’s story could play into the hearing, an if true could prevent her from being declared bankrupt.

Cameras will not be allowed in the Federal Courthouse where the bankruptcy hearing is being held.

The feeding frenzy over THQ took place yesterday, but no news of the event had leaked out until now. Kotaku has published an internal THQ memo from THQ CEO Brian Farrell and President Jason Rubin that details the sale of the company and most of its assets.

The letter is fairly sad, and the latter half is highly personal and flattering toward the people who worked at THQ. The main point of the memo, however, is to inform THQ employees of whether or not they still have a job. Overall, the outcome of the bidding could have been worse, though some beloved game franchises have ended up in odd places.

Fans of the Company of Heroes series can breathe a sigh of relief, as Relic Entertainment appears to be going to Sega. With Company of Heroes 2 so far along in its development, it’s almost certain that Sega will be able to get the strategy game into shape for a release sometime this year.

Fans of the Darksiders series have not been as lucky. Vigil Games, the developer of Darksiders and Darksiders II has not been sold, and remains a part of the THQ bankruptcy case. This could very well mean that the studio will be closing.

Developer Crytek has agreed to purchase the Homefront series, something that should excite shooter fans, and Take 2 is looking to buy Evolve, a game about which nothing is known.

One of the more odd sales is of the studio Volition and the Metro series to Koch Media. Volition is the developer of perhaps the hottest property THQ had to sell, the Saints Row series. Though Koch’s subsidiary Deep Silver is a relatively small niche publisher, it has recently been trying to break out with the Dead Island games.

Ubisoft was also a part of the bidding, and has nabbed THQ’s Montreal studio and the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth RPG. This is pretty great news for those employees and South Park fans alike. The Montreal employees will likely be folded into Ubisoft’s Montreal studio in some way, and the publisher is unlikely to let a hyped game like The Stick of Truth fall through the cracks.

Unfortunately, the employees of THQ properties that were not part of the sale are being laid off. From the memo:

If you are an employee of an entity that is not included in the sale, we regret that your position will end. A small number of our headquarters staff will continue to be employed by THQ beyond January 25 to assist with the transition. THQ has sufficient resources to pay these employees for work going forward, and we will be contacting these employees immediately to ensure their continued employment during this transition period. We are requesting the ability to offer certain severance pay to minimize disruption for employees of non-included entities as they determine the next steps in their careers.

A sad day for the gaming industry, which has seen so many sad days of layoffs in the past year. Though the THQ logo has now been relegated to nostalgia status, a few of the publisher’s coveted titles, at least, seem to have found a decent home.

Atari is one of the most well known brands in the gaming industry. That being said, the company now known as Atari hasn’t been associated with a hit for a long time. The modern gaming industry has not been kind …

Atari is one of the most well known brands in the gaming industry. That being said, the company now known as Atari hasn’t been associated with a hit for a long time. The modern gaming industry has not been kind to the company, but it’s making a comeback via mobile and social gaming. That comeback may be delayed for a bit as it now works its way through bankruptcy.

Atari’s U.S. branch announced today that it has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move is being used to detach itself from its France-based parent company, Atari S.A. The company says it has been a growth driver for the parent company since rebranding itself as a social game developer in 2011, but the break off from its parent company is being used to “preserve [its] inherent value and and unlock revenue potential unrealized while under control of Atari S.A.”

As part of the bankruptcy process, Atari U.S. plans to sell off all of its assets, including its branding. Some of the properties available for sale include Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Tempest, Test Drive, Backyard Sports, and more.

Atari says that its business will continue as normal over the next few months. In fact, the company has a few new games in the pipeline that will be launching on mobile devices, including a new entry in the Rollercoaster Tycoon series and Atari Casino.

Atari is just starting the bankruptcy process, but troubled publisher THQ has been there for a while. The company announced its plans to sell off the company to a private investor in late December, but the company’s investors, with the help of the court, stopped the sale in favor of an auction where each property may be sold off piece by piece. We’ll know later this week if THQ will end up as a whole in the hands of its initial investor or if the company will be split up among the wolves hoping to obtain the lucrative Saints Row franchise.

All that being said, Atari probably doesn’t have anything to worry about. Mobile gamers who grew up with an Atari 2600 will be able to enjoy touch-enabled versions of their favorite retro games for years to come.

Coming just one day after U.K. electronics retailer HMV announced it would seek administration, auditing firm Deloitte has announced that it has been commissioned to administrate Blockbuster U.K. Deloitte was also mentioned as a possible administrator for HMV.

Deloitte claims that Blockbuster U.K.’s “core” business is still solid. A buyer for the company’s 528 stores across the U.K. will be sought. Blockbuster U.K. currently employs 4190 people.

Unlike HMV, which suspended trading of its stock on the London Stock Exchange, Blockbuster stock will continue to trade normally. Deloitte also made a point to assure customers that all gift cards will be honored.

“In recent years Blockbuster has faced increased competition from internet-based providers along with the shift to digital streaming of movies and games,” said Lee Manning, a Deloitte partner and one of the people assigned to jointly administer Blockbuster U.K. “We are working closely with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible for all creditors.”

Blockbuster U.K. is just another in a line of British retailers of physical media to run into financial trouble. In addition to HMV, GameStop closed its stores in the U.K. last year and Game Group entered administration in March of last year. These failures are almost certainly a sign of things to come in the U.S. and the rest of the world, as media consumption shifts from physical discs to downloadable and streaming options.

HMV, the British entertainment retailer, has announced that its discussions with creditors have come to an end and the company will enter administration. Trading of HMV stock has been suspended on the London Stock Exchange. Deloitte partners Nick, Edwards, Neville Kahn, and Rob Harding have been name-dropped as posible administrators of the company and some of its subsidiaries.

HMV has released an official statement regarding the key events:

On 13 December 2012, the Company announced that as a result of current market trading conditions, the Company faced material uncertainties and that it was probable that the Group would not comply with its banking covenants at the end of January 2013. The Company also stated that it was in discussions with its banks.

Since that date, the Company has continued the discussions with its banks and other key stakeholders to remedy the imminent covenant breach. However, the Board regrets to announce that it has been unable to reach a position where it feels able to continue to trade outside of insolvency protection, and in the circumstances therefore intends to file notice to appoint administrators to the Company and certain of its subsidiaries with immediate effect.

The Directors of the Company understand that it is the intention of the administrators, once appointed, to continue to trade whilst they seek a purchaser for the business.

It is proposed that Nick Edwards, Neville Kahn and Rob Harding, partners of Deloitte LLP, will be appointed as the administrators of the Company and certain of its subsidiaries.

The Company’s ordinary shares will be suspended from trading on the London Stock Exchange with immediate effect.

The situation is similar to that faced by Game Group in March of last year. Game entered administration and closed hundreds of stores throughout the U.K.

Physical retailers of electronics goods, such as Best Buy, have been seeing declining sales in the face of the growing internet retailers and streaming video services. There are also rumors that entertainment companies will be increasing the pressure on the market for used physical media using digital rights management (DRM) and other tactics.

After a successful run with the Humble Bundle and a few solid releases this year, it looked like troubled publisher THQ could stay on top of things. That assumption may have been too optimistic as the company has just filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

THQ announced today that it has secured an asset purchase agreement with the Clearlake Capital Group as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. The asset sale, which includes the publisher’s owned studios and current games, will allow the publisher to “shed certain legacy obligations and emerge with stronger financial backing of a new owner with substantial experience in software and technology.”

“The sale and filing are necessary next steps to complete THQ’s transformation and position the company for the future, as we remain confident in our existing pipeline of games, the strength of our studios and THQ’s deep bench of talent,” said Brian Farrell, Chairman and CEO of THQ. “We are grateful to our outstanding team of employees, partners and suppliers who have worked with us through this transition. We are pleased to have attracted a strong financial partner for our business, and we hope to complete the sale swiftly to make the process as seamless as possible.”

So, what does this mean for the games that THQ is currently working on like Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth? All games and studios are going to remain as is while THQ transfers ownership to whoever this new mystery investor is. Unless the courts do something out of the ordinary, THQ won’t have to lay off any employees and all games will continue in development as planned.

THQ’s president, Jason Rubin, reiterates that there’s nothing to worry about and that filing bankruptcy won’t impact day to day operations:

“We have incredible, creative talent here at THQ. We look forward to partnering with experienced investors for a new start as we will continue to use our intellectual property assets to develop high-quality core games, create new franchise titles, and drive demand through both traditional and digital channels.”

In short, THQ fans have nothing to worry about at this juncture. The publisher will keep making games, and highly anticipated titles like Metro: Last Light are still on schedule. The only real difference is that we no longer have to see reports every week of how little THQ’s stock is worth.

The OnLive reorganization and layoffs last week were bizarre. The company issued no official statements at the time of the incident, leaving it to Twitter to break the story and allowing confusion and seemingly conflicting reports to spread. What actually happened is, perhaps even more strange than the rumors first suggested.

What happened, in short, is that OnLive filed for ABC bankruptcy, which gave the company some protection from its debtors and investors. It then laid off its entire staff and transferred its assets to a new company (also named OnLive) through an intermediary. This left investors in the old OnLive, including HTC, holding the bag.

The reason for the restructuring remained a mystery until yesterday, as the company was widely believed to have been solvent. The San Jose Mercury News managed to get an interview with the intermediaries to the transaction, and it turns out that OnLive was in severe debt. Joel Weinberg, CEO of Insolvency Services Group (ISG) told the Mercury News that the company owed $30-40$ million to creditors.

Weinberg stated that OnLive was in “dire straits” and only days away from going under when the insolvency process commenced last Friday. ISG transferred OnLive’s assets to the new OnLive, which was funded by the Lauder Partners, a venture capitalist company. Weinberg told the Mercury News that he only expects to be able to pay the old OnLIve’s creditors 5 or 10 cents per dollar of OnLive debt owed.
