Classifieds search engine Oodle.com made its application programming interface generally available today, and introduced a new affiliate program for API users.

Oodle announced the expanded availability of the API. Site publishers can add classifieds listings to their websites through use of the interface.

Big users of the API, being those affiliates who send more than 10,000 refers per month to Oodle’s listings, can be eligible for the new revenue stream announced today.

The company sees interest from sites emphasizing local and vertical niches. Oodle’s API will allow them to expand an existing classified offering with its listings.

Developers who like mashups can use Oodle’s API along with other applications. Major Internet sites like Yahoo and Google have also made various APIs available, and these have proved very popular with web service creators.

Oodle’s API can be seen in action at sites like Backpage, which provides online classified sites for local media outlets. Backpage marketing director Carl Ferrer noted in the announcement Backpage has been using the API for three months.

He described the implementation as “painless” and said the Oodle listings have been well-received by Backpage users.

Oodle noted in its documentation for the API that it is based on XML using the XMLRPC specification. Open source client libraries for XMLRPC may be obtained for all major programming languages, like C/C++, Java, PHP, Perl, and Python.

The two charter members of Oodle's Partner Network will use APIs to connect to Oodle's index of classified advertising and display those search engine results.

The two charter members of Oodle’s Partner Network will use APIs to connect to Oodle’s index of classified advertising and display those search engine results.

Oodle promises increased exposure for publishers appearing in its index when partners who signup and use the APIs start displaying publisher ads on their sites.

“By broadening the base of our search platform, classifieds publishers in our index can receive even more qualified traffic through Oodle,” said Craig Donato, co-founder and CEO of Oodle. He has also noted they eventually want to make the API publicly available.

Lycos now has a dedicated presence called Lycos Classifieds. Users of Lycos sites can post ads for free at Oodle and gain exposure within and outside the Lycos community.

Village Voice Media’s BackPage, an ad site based in Phoenix covering some 40 metropolitan areas, will include Oodle results in its classified listings. The Backpage website described itself as a group of community sites operated by local media outlets.

With the Oodle API, classified publishers can then both highlight their inventory of listings and allow users the option to see what’s available on other local sites. “We’re excited to include Oodle’s results in our local marketplaces,” said Carl Ferrer from VP of BackPage.com “If our users can’t first find it on Backpage, we’re happy to direct them to other resources where they can find what they’re looking for.”

Ferrer also noted to Classified Intelligence that BackPage exists to help local media compete with Craigslist. BackPage uses a similar approach to that competitor in its look and feel. The Oodle partnership will start with six of its outlets before expanding.

We’ve gotten a sneak peak at a new press release coming out later today from classified search engine Oodle.

They’re announcing a new Oodle Partner Network and have signed up Lycos and Backpage as charter members.

Oodle search results are being incorporated into Lycos’ new classified marketplace, recently launched this week located at lycos.oodle.com.

“We’re excited about the launch of Lycos classifieds,” said Brian Kalinowski, chief operating officer of Lycos, Inc. “Not only can our users post classified listings for free but by partnering with Oodle, they quickly identify the most relevant listings, whether they were published on our site or elsewhere.”

Oodle results are also being added to backpage.com, a group of free community classified sites operated by local media outlets including newspapers, radio and television stations in 40 metro areas. This week results were introduced in Houston, Denver, LA, Cleveland, Tucson, Boston and San Antonio.

“We’re excited to include Oodle’s results in our local marketplaces,” said Carl Ferrer from VP of backpage.com. “If our users can’t first find it on Backpage, we’re happy to direct them to other resources where they can find what they’re looking for.”

The new network comes at the request of many Oodle partners who have been asking the company for more traffic. Oodle says its network is publisher-friendly as they do not direct the traffic to Oodle but send the visitor directly to the publisher of the ad.

The new Partner Network brings with it an API that allows others to add Oodle search results to their site.

Add to DiggThis

When it comes to covering the search engine industry, the press seems to begin and end with Google happenings, something this author is guilty of as well. However, it’s always nice to cover the happenings of Google’s competitors, provided they’ve done something to warrant said coverage.

Such is the case with Google’s biggest competitor, Yahoo! While Google has been making headlines with their Google Earth launch, among others, Yahoo has been quietly upgrading their HotJobs property.

Yahoo HotJobs now features a job engine, a search function that queries Yahoo’s HotJob database, which is also undergoing some alterations. Before, Yahoo HotJobs featured listings from organizations that have paid for their inclusion. Now, the newly improved HotJobs spiders the web for job listings, and are then added to Yahoo’s job index. Yahoo has also altered the HotJobs search results in order to accommodate these new listings.

According to Michael Nguyen of the SocialPatterns blog, Yahoo HotJobs search results are organized into three separate categories: Sponsor Companies, Featured Job Results, and Job Results from the Web. Each of these result categories offers just what they say: Sponsor Companies is just that; companies that have paid Yahoo to be listed, which is similar to the Featured Job Results. Results from the Web are what they say; jobs found on the web by Yahoo’s spider and haven’t paid to be included.

Michael also indicates Yahoo is populating their job search index with listings from Careerboard, Jobvertise, and Backpage. HotJobs is also receiving openings from government, school and corporate job boards.

Yahoo’s new job engine is live and can be used by anyone, no registration required.
