AOL Launches Socialthing

AOL has introduced Socialthing a new platform that connects social networks with other Web sites.

When adding Socialthing to a Web site a basic navigation bar appears at the bottom of the page. Visitors to a Socialthing-enabled Web site get a unified sign-on allowing them to chat and send instant messages to others. They can also syndicate content from other social networks including AOL’s Bebo, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

AOL’s MediaGlow has launched a new political news and blog site called PoliticsDaily.com.

PoliticsDaily.com features a mix of political views and will focus on in-depth political analysis instead of breaking news. AOL says as more people go online for political news and information that its new site will offer information across the political spectrum.

Phishing Scam Leads To Four Years In Prison For Connecticut Man

A Connecticut man has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a phishing scam that tricked AOL users into turning over personal information.

Charlie Blount, JR., 25 of West Haven, along with Michael Dolan and others conspired to "harvest" email addresses of AOL subscribers from the Internet, according to court documents.

AOL Sites Continue To Grow

AOL sites continued to experience growth by receiving record traffic in February, with pageviews increasing 21 percent year over year to reach 5.7 billion and total minutes rose 22 percent to 4.2 billion, according to comScore.

Additionally, according to Nielsen Online, AOL users spent more than three hours and forty-five minutes on its sites or applications in February, which is the most of any online company.

Bebo Makes European Push

The AOL owned social networking site Bebo has announced it has launched in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch as part of its continued international expansion.

Bebo says it has 22 million users globally with close to half of them in the UK. Previously Bebo was online available in English and Polish.

MapQuest Adds New Feature To Its Mobile Service

AOL’s MapQuest has added a new feature to its MapQuest 4 Mobile, called My Places.

My Places allows MapQuest users to save maps and routes to their profile from the MapQuest site and access them on MapQuest.com or their mobile phone. MapQuest 4 Mobile is a free downloadable application.

My Places allows users to set up an account on the MapQuest site and view their saved locations using MapQuest 4 Mobile. Users can view their saved locations either on their mobile or their PC.

AOL Rolls Out Classified Site

AOL has entered into the classified market place with the launch of AOL Classifieds that allows users to search through local listings for every Zip Code in the U.S., as well as post their own ads for free.

AOL partnered with Oodle, which operates the largest network of classifieds services in the U.S. Users will have access to more than 40 million listings aggregated from more than 80,000 different sites.
