Google Earth Provides Updates, Answers

There’s a fresh post on the Google LatLong Blog, and it’s titled, “Where in the world is…(Answers).”  You see, the post informs readers of various geographic locations that were hinted at earlier.  But if Google was asking (perhaps rhetorically), “Where in the world is an updated image?” the answer would be, “just about everywhere.”

Next to that term, Answers Corp found an entry for $100 million, and acquired Lexico Publishing Group.

Google (Finally) Gets To Map Russia

Presidents Bush and Putin may not be on the best of terms, but the Russian government is embracing (or at least nodding to) Google; a changed law has allowed the American search engine giant to release a Russia-specific mapping service.

Google Answers Resurfaces

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, a Russian mystic born in the 1800s, supposedly survived being poisoned, shot, and beaten (though a subsequent drowning did him in).  Now Google Answers is also proving hard to kill, and it has resurfaced in the same part of the world.

Map Instant Answers Added to Live Search

Windows Live Search added a new type of Instant Answer: Interactive maps at the top of search results. If you search for an address or a place, Live Search should detect that and put a map of that place right at the top. Search for “map” and it will try to figure out where you are (based on IP) and show you a map of your current location.

Ex-Googlers Launch Q&A Site

This just in: Uclue.com is a new website by a number of researchers who used to work for the (now cancelled) Google Answers program.

This is cool, and I wish my former colleagues all the best! (Disclosure: I watched the site come to life from afar, though I wasn’t actively involved in it.) I’m also happy to have another way now to pose urgent questions, and I’m curious how well the system will work out in the future. Certainly the biggest obstacle will be marketing the service right to find lots of people asking questions (especially people with little time… because with competing services like Yahoo Answers, while you don’t invest money, you usually have to invest more time).
