A video of a bus crash with a deer is gaining some viral steam. According to the video’s description, the white-tailed deer crashed through the CamTran bus on Tuesday evening. It shows the deer crash through the windshield, then flail and run around like a maniac.

Eventually, though we don’t see it in the video, the driver reportedly let the deer out of the bus through the door, and it went back out into the wild. The incident reportedly happened in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

“There’s nothing like eating a predator to make you feel like a predator,” said one patron in the above Fox News report.

“They’re surprisingly tasty,” another said about lions.

Surprisingly, nobody said, “It’s like eating a cat, because that’s what it is.”

As you can see from the video, otter and beaver were also on the menu. It’s unclear whether they’re still serving these meats, but here’s a page from their online menu, which indicates you should still have no problem getting a kangaroo taco:

Also, they deliver.

River guide Paul Templer was an experienced traveler by the age of 27; he led tours down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe many times, and had encountered rambunctious animals there before. But none would prove to be so terrifying as the hippo that nearly ate him 17 years ago.

Templer recently sat down and wrote his tale for the Guardian and says he had met the same hippo before; it had even rushed at him in a “half-hearted” way when he moved to close to its territory. But on this day, the bull would become so agitated that a half-hearted attack grew into a full-fledged riot.

“We were near the end of the tour, the light was softening and we were taking in the tranquillity,” Templer wrote. “The solid whack I felt behind me took me by surprise. I turned just in time to see Evans, who had been flung out of his boat, flying through the air. His boat, with his two clients still in it, had been lifted half out of the water on the back of the huge bull hippo.”

Templer says he shouted to the other guides to get their clients to safety before turning to try and grab Evans. But just as he was about to grab the man’s hand, he was enveloped in darkness.

“There was no transition at all, no sense of approaching danger. It was as if I had suddenly gone blind and deaf,” he says.

What happened next is enough to make any reader shudder in terror.

“I was aware that my legs were surrounded by water, but my top half was almost dry. I seemed to be trapped in something slimy. There was a terrible, sulfurous smell, like rotten eggs, and a tremendous pressure against my chest. My arms were trapped but I managed to free one hand and felt around – my palm passed through the wiry bristles of the hippo’s snout. It was only then that I realized I was underwater, trapped up to my waist in his mouth.”

He managed to free himself when the hippo took a breath, only to be dragged under again. Just when he began to resign himself to a dark, watery death, the animal spat him out and he was dragged to safety by his friends. He was alive, but just barely; the hippo left him with over 40 puncture wounds–one so deep that part of his lung was visible–and only one arm.

As for Templer’s friend Evans, he wasn’t so lucky. His body was found downriver two days later.

“Attempts were made to find and kill the rogue hippo, but he seemed to have gone into hiding,” Templer says. ” I’m convinced, though, that I met him one more time. Two years later I led an expedition down the Zambezi and as we drifted past the stretch where the attack had taken place, a huge hippo lurched out of the water next to my canoe. I screamed so loudly that those with me said they’d never heard anything like it. He dived back under and was never seen again. I’d bet my life savings it was the same hippo, determined to have the final word.”

There is currently a lot of web interest in river otters as more places are opening up North American river otter exhibits. Wildlife DNA lab recently received an $18,000 grant to research them.

Residents of San Francisco with an interest in river otters, or just cute animals, will be happy to know that an exhibit is coming to the Aquarium of the Bay.

The exhibit will open this summer. The aquarium says it will serve as an education and conservation resource and will provide an opportunity for guests to understand environmental changes. Here’s a brief description:

With design efforts led by EHDD, the approximately 1,000-square-foot exhibit will extend from the Aquarium’s Touch the Bay exhibit, taking over the Farallon Room which was previously used for events and classroom programs, and provide sweeping views of San Francisco Bay. A six-foot tall living wall adorned with live plants will act as a unique backdrop to this $1.3 million expansion. The modern, gallery-like exhibit will feature deep and shallow pools for the otters to cavort in, plus plenty of dry land and living foliage to explore and a small waterfall to play on. They will share the exhibit with live fishes and crawfish. Enclosed in nine-foot tall glass walls, visitors will experience an almost 360-degree view of the exhibit.

“This whole exhibit is about connecting people to the upper watershed,” says John Frawley, President and CEO of Aquarium of the Bay and The Bay Institute. “River otters are the perfect animal to demonstrate the importance of the watershed. They’re charismatic and fun to watch, and they simultaneously create an opportunity for us to speak to our lifelong learners about the critical needs of our ecosystem.”

The exhibit will be the first of a two-part expansion plan for the Aquarium. The second phase involves including new classrooms, which will be called “Watershed Discovery Labs.”

A giant, deadly snail was found in a Texas woman’s garden recently, and researchers are worried that a strain of meningitis will be spread if more of the creatures are discovered.

The snail in question was spotted by a woman in her Houston backyard; luckily, she didn’t touch it, but only snapped a picture of it to show wildlife officials. Now, researchers at Sam Houston State University are wondering how the giant African snail got there and if there are more wandering around. As of now, the original is out there somewhere, because it got away before it could be captured.

“Unfortunately, humans are picking the snails up,” said Dr. Autumn J. Smith-Herron, the director of the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species at Sam Houston State University. “They carry a parasitic disease that can cause a lot of harm to humans and sometimes even death.”

The species is the same one that invaded Florida recently and began destroying crops and even homes. Because they multiply faster than Gremlins–they can lay up to 1,200 eggs a year–it’s extremely difficult to get rid of them once they settle in. Reportedly, a boy brought three home from Hawaii to keep as pets in the ’60s and started an infestation of 18,000 that took nine years to battle.

Because their appearance is so out-of-the-ordinary, there’s a danger of children picking them up to play with them. Everyone is urged not to touch the snails and to tell their children to leave them alone should they spot one. If one is seen, contact the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species immediately.

And the one that acted like a cat, well, he’d be a jerk. Because cats are jerks. Sorry, internet. It’s true. Cute little jerks.

A woman in Salina, Kansas got the shock of her life when she left the festivities at the circus she was attending to use the restroom: when she opened the door, she found a tiger standing a couple feet in front of her.

Jenna Krehbiel was enjoying a day with her family at the Isis Shrine Circus at the Bicentennial Center when she decided to take a bathroom break, and unfortunately she wasn’t alone.

“I went in to use the bathroom, and a lady came in to get her daughter out and said there was a tiger loose,” Krehbiel said. “I didn’t know it was in the bathroom, and I walked in the [open] door, which closed right after I had walked in. I saw the tiger; it was at most 2 feet in front of me, and I turned around calmly and walked back toward the door. Someone opened the door and said get out.”

Apparently, the tiger escaped shortly after performing, and staff members were in the process of blocking off the bathroom once they realized there was a jungle cat inside, but Krehbiel didn’t realize what was going on. Luckily, the tiger was captured and no one was hurt.

“Once she saw the tiger, I’m sure she knew to go the other way,” Bicentennial Center manager Chris Bird said. “Overall, it was a scary, surreal moment. I am glad no one was hurt or injured.”
