Jeffrey Tambor, who plays twin brothers George and Oscar Bluth on Arrested Development participated in a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) today, discussing the show, among other things.

Arrested Development, of course, is due to return as a Netflix-exclusive series later this month, and fans are champing at the bit to see what the long-anticipated fourth season has in store.

Tambor, of course, fielded many questions about the show. Following are some highlights. If you’re not familiar with the show, you might as well stop reading now, because much of the discussion requires you to be.

When asked about his favorite running theme/joke from the show, he responded, “There’s always money in the banana stand.”

One user asked how the famous chicken dance performed by numerous cast members on the show came about, to which he responded, “I never knew about it until I was asked to do it. And when I’m asked to do it, I do it very badly. I’m the worst chicken dancer of the cast.”

When asked whether he likes playing George or Oscar more, he said, “One side of my brain likes Oscar. One side of my brain likes George.”

When asked if Judy Greer (Kitty) ever flashed him in real life, he responded, “No. And that’s a problem.”

Tambor said it only took about five minutes for the cast to slip back into the AD roles once they started shooting again. “We’re all so used to each other. Our first scenes, we just slipped into it naturally,” he said. “They’re all very fine actors.”

In response to another question, he noted that very little of the dialogue on the show is ad-libbed, and that the writing is just that good.

Of course, he was asked about the long-rumored Arrested Development movie, to which he responded, “I think the new season will promote a great amount of popularity, which will help a movie come into existence.”

On his favorite AD guest star, Tambor said, “They were all great, but Henry Winkler is a close friend of mine, and I was so glad to have him aboard.”

On getting the news that the show would be canceled: “I was sad. I wasn’t surprised, I think we all saw it coming.”

On the most exciting thing about the upcoming season: “It’s new format. The fact that we’re doing 15 all at once, and each character gets to tell his story. We’re the little engine that could, and we came back.”

On his favorite episode: “Gosh, I would have to say that the entire fourth season. I’m just so happy to be back.”

Hopefully us fans will agree.

Tambor was joined by the co-creators of Onion News Empire, so if you’re interested in that too, check out the thread.

Now watch this recent interview with Lucille Bluth.

The Boston manhunt is still going strong after one of the suspects in last week’s marathon bombing was shot and killed last night. The other suspect, who is still at large, is still in the Boston area with police sweeping through the Watertown area looking for him.

The residents of Watertown, and Boston at large, were encouraged to lock their doors and stay off the streets today. During the downtime, one Redditor who lives in Watertown did a live AMA (Ask Me Anything) of the situation.

Here’s the proof provided that shows he is in the Watertown area:

The top question posed to the redditor, who is going by the handle of kamikazi, describes the situation last night when news first broke out that a cop at MIT had been shot and killed by the suspects. He also described the scene when the shootout began early in the morning as police pursued the suspects near his neighborhood.

“Before I went to bed last night I checked reddit and the MIT shooting was just breaking(like 15 minutes old) I remember thinking. “Maybe it’s the Bombers but more likely probably a mugging gone bad or something”

Woke up sometime between 12:30-1:30(I was groggy so don’t really remember) to what sounded like someone taking out their trash but being an absolutely loud ass douche about it. Lots of banging and rustling. Probably was the shoot out which is 3ish/4ish blocks away.”

Obviously, the people in Watertown could never guess that their community would be the center of national attention. Rabidkamakazi addresses this after a redditor asked him if he was scared or excited about the events around him:

“Both really. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live in the zone of a mjaor news story. Now I know. It’s both exhilarating and terrifying. Especially because of the bomb aspect. I’ve been running to my windows occasionally to take pictures and I keep thinking. Well what if a bomb denoted now and blew in this window. I’d be pretty fucked.”

He also says that he hopes nobody else dies, including the suspect:

“I’m hoping no one else dies, including the bomber. I want his ass dragged before a judge so he can go to prision and die a slow painful death by shanking, not a fast one from a cops bullet.”

Finally, he says that he already has a plan in place for once everything blows over:

“Call my parents and loved ones. Buy a pack of cigs. Have one. Throw the rest away. then see how I feel about work.”

It’s been updated throughout the day with reports people are getting in from every news source imaginable, including pictures from the area.

A reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) with a cook from an In-N-Out Burger has been getting some attention outside of reddit. The cook of four years talked bacon burgers, and the burger chain’s lack of them with curious redditors.

One person asked, “What’s the one thing you don’t serve that you wish you did?”

The cook, going by the handle dravila9, responded, “Bacon burgers and onion rings. Took bacon in to cook after closing and it really changes everything. I can’t truly enjoy the burgers anymore.”

Another user asked, “Why do you think there aren’t bacon burgers?”

“Too complicated to keep real fresh bacon on hand and ready to cook since we don’t use that cheap fake bacon and it’s in the mission purpose statement that the menu will never change,” dravila9 responded.

Another user suggested that such a mission statement seems pretty restrictive for a company, to which dravila9 said, “Yeah and how we will never sacrifice quality for price. Like we will keep raising prices just to cover the cost instead of making the burgers smaller or not giving lettuce and tomatoes.”

dravila9′s original AMA post was edited to say, “Tonight after closing we made some bacon burgers with meat and bacon topped animal fries all smothered in Famous Dave’s BBQ sauce,” and points to this image:

There’s a new viral share hoax going around Facebook involving a photo of Bill Gates.

“Hey Facebook, As some of you may know, I’m Bill Gates. If you click that share link, I will give you $5,000. I always deliver, I mean, I brought your Windows XP, right?” says a sign in the hands of the Microsoft founder.

The photo already has over 200,000 shares.

In reality, Bill Gates isn’t going to give you $5,000 for clicking share. Nobody is, for that matter. The photo was taken from Gates’ first-ever reddit AMA, which he hosted on Monday. Here’s the original image:

Clearly, the text inside the piece of paper has simply been shopped. It also looks like they’ve replaced the little reddit alien in the background with a sex toy or something. Cool.

There’s no doubt that some people shared this simply because they thought it was funny – they know it’s fake. But there are plenty of people (evidenced by the comments) that believe sharing this photo will net them five grand from one of the richest men in the world.

In either case, just don’t share it. You may know it’s a joke but thousands of others don’t. And it’s all over my news feed. And it’s annoying. So stop. Thanks.

Bill Gates has just finished up his first-ever reddit AMA, answering users’ questions for just under one hour. Among the topics of discussion included Microsoft, coding, his wealth, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, vaccines, and yes, Bing.

Replying to question “Do you guys really use Bing? I mean seriously?” Gates had this to say:

Seriously Bing is the better product at this point. Try the challenge. I am biased but the work to make Bing better has been amazing.

So there you have it, folks. Bill Gates thinks you should take the Bing challenge.

Among the other interest answers given by Gates…

Since becoming wealthy, what’s the cheapest thing that gives you the most pleasure?

Kids. Cheap cheeseburgers. Open Course Ware courses…

What one Microsoft program or product that was never fully developed or released do you wish had made it to market?

We had a rich database as the client/cloud store that was part of a Windows release that was before its time. This is an idea that will remerge since your cloud store will be rich with schema rather than just a bunch of files and the client will be a partial replica of it with rich schema understanding. (WinFS)

Can you still jump over chairs?

Less than I used to. It was part of exercise for snow skiing. I still ski but I am not as hard core…

How was your relationship with Steve jobs? I always hoped that y’all were really good friends and competitors.

He and I respected each other. Our biggest joint project was the Mac where Microsoft had more people on the project than Apple did as we wrote a lot of applications. I saw Steve regularly over the years including spending an afternoon with him a few months before he tragically passed away…

What emerging technology today do you think will cause another big stir for the average consumer in the same way that the home computer did years ago?

Robots, pervasive screens, speech interaction will all change the way we look at “computers”. Once seeing, hearing, and reading (including handwriting) work very well you will interact in new ways..

Head here for to read the whole Q&A session.

Reddit has a big 2012. Really big. Like, 37 billion pageviews big. The site has made its way from simply a popular site among the internet community to mega-popular site among the internet community that also gets talked about on CNN. Sarcasm aside, it’s hard to go a week these days without a major story that has some sort of reddit spin to it.

And part of what’s thrown reddit into the national dialogue is the site’s AMA Q&A sessions.

From politicians like Al Gore and President Obama, to NFL players and Snoop Dogg – it’s been a big year for Ask Me Anything.

AMA mod karmanaut spent some time analyzing data from a lifetime’s worth of AMAs, and reddit has just published his findings in a blog post.

The data charts the 400+ AMAs with over 100 comments that took place over the last three years (give or take), and organizes them by category.

And actors/entertainers win with 80 AMAs. That group is responsible for the most successful AMAs (apart from ‘other’ of course). Next is directors with 39 AMAs and political figures with 38.

Check out their chart below:

If you weren’t on reddit at any point yesterday, you missed a truly great AMA featuring Snoop <del datetime="2012-12-06T15:45:31+00:00">Dogg</del> Lion. Although his responses were mostly brief, Snoop took a lot of time to answer dozens upon dozens of questions on everything from music, weed, his shift to “Lion,” and video games.

There were a lot of gems to come out of the AMA, but with one response Snoop won the internet yesterday. He also proved that he is enough of an internet-lover to get a classic self-referential meme.

Here’s the Q&A:

Beautiful. Snoop gets it:

We also learned that Snoop smokes 81 blunts a day. I don’t really have words for that. You should go check out the AMA.

Reddit AMAs: They’re so hot right now. Everybody’s doing them – Al Gore, the President, Congressmen. Once reserved for brave internet denizens, the reddit Q&A sessions have gone mainstream. Gasp.

Figures from the sports world have participated in AMAs before, but today marks the first time that an NFL team has worked with the site for a series of official Ask Me Anything sessions. First up on the front page of the internet: The Washington Redskins.

“These AMAs are a perfect opportunity to get a one-of-a-kind interview with your favorite Redskins players. Today’s is the first of at least three scheduled interviews, so stay tuned for future opportunities,” says the team on their official blog.

Today’s AMA is currently going on, and it features Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan. He’s responding to questions via the username Redskinsdotcom. Yes, that’s him participating in the AMA in the photo above. Mashable confirms that the other AMAs will feature breakout star running back Alfred Morris on December 6th and Lorenzo Alexander on December 12th.

Awesome, except I want to ask RGIII if he’s thrilled that he singlehandedly won me hundreds of dollars in my fantasy leagues. I’m sure he would be happy for me. Though I can’t wait to find out whether Alfred Morris would prefer to fight 100 duck-sized horses, or one horse-sized duck.

Reddit, who previously snagged the President of the United States for one of its Ask Me Anything (AMA) sessions, has just capped off another interesting Q&A. This time, the guest was former Vice President Al Gore.

As would be expected, Gore fielded a variety of questions regarding climate change, energy sources, and his failed 2000 Presidential bid.

Here are some of the best questions and his responses:

Are you in favor of nuclear energy as a possible energy alternative for the future?

It will play a role, but probably a limited role. I think the waste issue can probably be solved, and Fukushima notwithstanding, the safety of operation issue an pobably be solved. But the cost is absurdly high and still rising. Moreover, if we model it as the path forward, and encourage developing countries to head down that road, we would create a massive security challenge.

During the eight years I worked in the White House, every single nuclear proliferation threat we had to deal with was connected to a reactor program. The technologies are different, but if you are the dictator of a country that has a reactor program and a fuel cycle, you can secretly orde the same people to enrich the fuel to weapons-grade over time and build bombs. Bad outcome. New reactor designs hold promise but they are all at least 15 years away. Meanwhile, solar pv is riding a “Moore’s Law Jr.” costdown curve. Wind and efficiency too, though not as steep. We need to get to scale on renewables quickly and make the transition.

For people that may be skeptical about global warming, what is the one undeniable scientific fact that you feel backs it up the most effectively?

There are at least 15 deeply researched separate lines of evidence that all confirm man-made global warming. They are all consistent, each with the others. Every National Academy of Science on the planet agrees with the consensus. The Academies describe the evidence as “indisputable”. Every professional scientific society in every field related to climate science and earth science also agree. And 97-98% of climate scientists worldwide most actively publishing also agree. Animals and plants also agree — in that they are moving their ranges by latitude and altitude to find climate niches similar to the ones in which they evolved.

Even if you leave climate science completely out of it and just measure extreme temperatures, the statistical record of global temperatures shows that three-standard deviation events have increased from 0.25% of the time (from 1951-1980) to 10% of the time now. There is as strong a consensus as you will find in science, with the possible exception of the existence of gravity.

On internet infrastructure…

Our national information infrastructure is no longer competitive. We need to invest in more bandwidth, easier access, and the rapid transition of our democratic institutions to the internet. And we need to protect the freedom of the internet against corporate control by legacy businesses that see it as a threat, and against the obscene invasions of privacy and threats to security from government and corporations alike. Please think about this: almost everytime there has been a choice between privacy/security on the one hand and convenience on the other, the mass of folks have chosen convenience. I for one believe the “stalker economy” on the internet is undemocratic and anti- American. Are folks at the gag point on this yet? Thanks, btw, to the Reddit community for fighting off Sopa and PIPA. Keep your powder dry; more big struggles ahead.

On advice to President Obama dealing with partisan roadblocks…

Stand on principle. As Mark Twain said, “Do the right thing! You’ll ratify your friends and astonish your enemies.” Start with climate.

I understand you and Tommy Lee Jones were roomates in college. What was he like?

He is, first of all, a terrific friend. He really is an amazing guy. As good at directing as at acting, btw. Check out his performance in Spielberg’s Lincoln. Incredible! I hope he gets another Oscar for it. I’m biased, but I sure think he deserves it.

Some years ago you were asked if you thought the 2000 election was stolen. You said: “There may come a time when I speak on that, but it’s not now; I need more time to frame it carefully if I do. In our system, there’s no intermediate step between a definitive Supreme Court decision and violent revolution.” Are you ready to address that question now?

I haven’t ruled out addressing that at some point in my life, but no, I don’t believe now is the time to do it, if that time ever comes.

When users logged on and saw the words “I am Barack Obama, President of the United States – AMA” at the top of the front page, they knew that it was an historic occasion for the site. Reddit has been called a driving force of the internet – a social force that not only generates a massive amount of pageviews, but can send a massive amount of them to your site – if you’re lucky enough to get a top link. And amid the cats, trolls, and subreddits devoted to mutilated penises, everyone know that reddit’s heart is pure. This can be seen in the random acts of generosity performed by the site’s members.

But this was something else. This was the President of the got-damn U-S-of-A…talking to redditors. When the comment total hit 4,000+ within 15 minutes of the AMA post, everyone knew records were bound to be set.

And according to reddit, they were. Big ones.

Preliminary pageview and unique visitor stats from reddit users showed that reddit had a banner day due to Obama’s AMA. But here are the official numbers from reddit:

2,987,307 pageviews on the day. Not on the site. On the single post.

If you count pageviews on the AMA post from the time of posting until noon today (EST), that number jumps to 5,280,441.

But here’s the most impressive part:

At any given time, the front page of reddit (http://www.reddit.com) has around 15-20% of active visitors. An extremely popular submission may have 2-5% of visitors at any given time. In the recorded history of reddit, we’ve never had one single submission get more visitors than the front page at any given time, until the Obama IAMA. The Obama IAMA received over 30% of all visitors to reddit at its peak.

That’s just insane.

And remember how Obama took down reddit? For awhile, both the front page and the actual AMA post were slow to load (if they loaded at all). Reddit explains why they had problems with all of the traffic, even though they knew about the AMA well in advance:

In preparation for the IAMA, we initially added 30 dedicated servers (20%~ increase) just for the comment thread. This turned out not to be enough, so we added another 30 dedicated servers to the mix. At peak, we were transferring 48 MB per second of reddit to the internet. This much traffic overwhelmed our load balancers which caused a lot of the slowness you probably experienced on reddit.

For the most part, redditors seemed happy with the AMA. Sure, Obama only answered ten questions and only spent around a half an hour participating – but hey, he’s a pretty busy guy. One thing has emerged since the session. One reddit user did some detective work and found that a lengthy question on student loans came from a new account whose creator may be tied to the Department of Justice.

Press plant? Wouldn’t be the first time a politician has tried to make an interview go more smoothly. It could just be a coincidence, but it is mighty suspicious, Mr. President.
