E3 2013 doesn’t officially kick off until tomorrow, but the major players will hold their press conferences today. Before that happens, Activision wants to steal a little bit of their thunder with a massive 30-minute gameplay demo of the latest Call of Duty title.

As was revealed during the Xbox One reveal, Call of Duty: Ghosts will be a next-gen launch title for the Xbox One and PS4. The title will be going up head-to-head against Battlefield 4 which got its own long trailer earlier this year. Now you can compare the two to find which next-gen shooter you’ll be pledging allegiance to in October.

You can bet that Activision will be at the Microsoft press conference today to reveal more gameplay footage of Call of Duty: Ghosts running on the Xbox One. You’ll also probably hear the words “innovative,” “exclusive,” and “cinematic” thrown around quite a bit.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be out later this year for Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC. There’s no mention of a Wii U version yet, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

At the February PS4 conference, Bungie announced that Destiny would be coming to the PS4 and PS3. Now the developer has announced that it will be bringing the game to Sony’s E3 press conference with a new trailer.

The trailer doesn’t really tell us much about the game, but it does have that cinematic flair that made Halo such a groundbreaking game when it launched on the original Xbox. If the actual game can pull this off, Destiny may just be a keeper.

We still don’t have any gameplay, but Bungie announced in the above trailer that that the gameplay will finally be shown off at Sony’s E3 press conference on June 10. It’s a pretty big win for Sony when you consider that Bungie was owned by Microsoft just a few years ago.

Beyond the Sony presser, expect a lot more Destiny news at E3. Besides Call of Duty Ghosts, this is Activision’s other big game for 2013. There’s a lot of expectation riding on it so Bungie has to get it right, and I have no reason to doubt them yet.

It’s a new year, and that means a new Call of Duty title. This year is a bit special though as it’s a transition year into next-gen consoles. The folks at Infinity Ward are taking full advantage of that fact with a new Call of Duty game coming to next-gen consoles.

Activision and Infinity Ward announced today that Call of Duty: Ghosts is the next title in the first-person shooter franchise. Many thought that Infinity Ward would continue with a fourth entry in the Modern Warfare storyline, but Ghosts is an entirely new story. The game is also being built with an entirely brand new engine to take advantage of next-gen consoles. That’s only a good thing as the Modern Warfare engine was starting to show its age around Modern Warfare 2.

To top off the announcement, Activision has also released a new trailer for the title. As is customary, no gameplay is present. Instead, we get a live-action trailer full of angry men wearing masks that make them look even angrier.

Infinity Ward also announced that it will be showing off the first gameplay demo of the title at Microsoft’s next Xbox event on May 21. With that in mind, it’s a pretty safe bet that Microsoft has secured more exclusive Call of Duty content to ensure that those who play Call of Duty on the Xbox 360 continue to do so on the next Xbox.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, PS4 and the next Xbox on November 5. There’s no mention of the Wii U in the announcement, but you shouldn’t read too much into that just yet.

Activision may be perceived as a money-making machine that just throws out the same game every year, but the company is heavily invested in the future of gaming technology. Take for instance this new real-time face rendering tech the company unveiled at GDC.

Well, that’s certainly unnerving. Here I thought Heavy Rain was pretty realistic, but this is in an entirely different league.

Here’s how they did it:

This animated character is being rendered in real-time on current video card hardware, using standard bone animation. The rendering techniques, as well as the animation pipeline are being presented at GDC 2013, “Next Generation Character Rendering” on March 27. The original high resolution data was acquired from Light Stage Facial Scanning and Performance Capture by USC Institute for Creative Technologies, then converted to a 70 bones rig, while preserving the high frequency detail in diffuse, normal and displacement composite maps. It is being rendered in a DirectX11 environment, using advanced techniques to faithfully represent the character’s skin and eyes.

For another example, here’s a screenshot of another face created using the same tech:

For more examples and information on how Activision achieved this, check out their blog.

Angry Birds is popular. How popular? Well, what if I told you that Rovio has managed to take its first three mobile games, package them for consoles, price them at $20, and sell over one million copies?

That’s precisely what Activision and Rovio have announced today. Angry Birds Trilogy for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo 3DS has sold over one million copies worldwide.

The game, released last fall, combines Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio. DLC for the title that provides over 100 new levels has already been released for the title.

Since the title has seen such success on consoles, Rovio has now decided to put Angry Birds Trilogy on all modern consoles. The developer has announced that the game will be coming to Nintendo’s Wii and Wii U consoles sometime during 2013.

“It was certainly satisfying to see Angry Birds gameplay adapt so well to other platforms in 2012,” said Petri Järvilehto, EVP of Games at Rovio. “The features specific to the Wii U are very intriguing to us, so we’re excited to release this version to fans.”

No doubt the Wii U’s touchscreen GamePad controller will be better suited to the Angry Birds game design than more standard console controllers. Also, off-TV GamePad play would provide an experience similar to the one people can get on smartphones. For Free.

Back near the beginning of the year, gameplay footage from Activision’s upcoming Walking Dead: Survival Instinct video game hit the web. The footage was so dreadful that fans speculated it must be from an unfinished version of the game, and Activision later confirmed that the video was a fan edit of footage from an early build of the game, and that it doesn’t reflect on the game’s actual quality.

The 20-second release date trailer released in mid-January raised suspicions about the game’s quality by showing absolutely no game footage. Instead, it featured some bland statements about the game from the actors who play the game’s characters on The Walking Dead AMC TV show.

Today Survival Instinct has finally gotten an “Official” trailer featuring footage from the game. Unfortunately, it does nothing to assuage gamers’ fears that the game is only a low-quality cash-in on a popular TV brand. The video appears to be made up almost entirely of in-game cut scenes, with graphics that don’t appear to have changed much from the “early build” footage leaked earlier. There are only a few quick-cuts to shots that look like they could possibly be actual gameplay footage. This is with less than two months to go before the game’s March 19 release date.

Activision and Nickelodeon today announced that they have teamed up to create new video games based on the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series that began airing last year. The deal encompasses three video games, the first of which will be released sometime this summer.

“The fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are unique in that they span generations and are very passionate,” said Kurt Niederloh, vice president of Activision Publishing Minneapolis. “We respect this passion and look forward to working with Nickelodeon to create games that embody the spirit of the property.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games have a storied history. The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game was released for the original Nintendo console in 1989. Though it is considered one of the hardest games of all time, it sold well and is considered a classic. Two arcade games released around the same time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time also went on to become hits and are considered classics of the side-scrolling beat ‘em up genre. Since that time, most Ninja Turtles video games have been plagued by the same quality problems seen in many games created to cash in on licensed TV or Movie properties.

“We are confident that these upcoming games will take gamers through interactive environments and action-packed adventures that truly capture the essence, tone and exciting elements of the Turtles,” said Sherice Torres, SVP of Nickelodeon Consumer Products.

Here’s hoping.

With eSports becoming more popular and accepted every year, it is only a matter of time before professional gamers will be making money comparable to professional athletes.

Activision today announced the Call of Duty Championship, which will feature a Call of Duty: Black Ops II tournament with a $1 million prize pool. From April 5-7 in Hollywood, California, 32 teams of four players will compete in a live-streamed tournament for their share of the $1 million. The top eight teams will receive a share of the money, with the first place team taking a $400,000 prize.

“More people play Call of Duty multiplayer every day than watch the average regular season game of the NBA,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “The scale and passion of the Call of Duty fan base is simply humbling, and yet there is no formal way to find out who amongst those millions of players is the best of the best, until now. Watching the performances of the very best Call of Duty players is already a mass spectator sport on YouTube and Call of Duty Elite.

This week Activision and Treyarch released a bit of information on the upcoming downloadable content (DLC) for Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

“With Black Ops II, the team set out to challenge assumptions about what fans should expect from Call of Duty, and there’s no exception with Revolution,” said Mark Lamia, Treyarch studio head.

Titled “Revolution,” the add-on will include four new multiplayer maps, “Downhill,” “Hydro,” “Mirage,” and “Grind.” A new map for zombies mode called “Die Rise” will also be included. It pits players against the zombies inside of collapsed skyscrapers in a ruined Chinese city.

In addition to the new maps, a new SMG called the “Peacekeeper” has been added for multiplayer, and a new zombies mode called “Turned” will allow players to take on the role of zombies themselves.

The DLC will be available first on the Xbox 360. On January 29 fans can download the update via Xbox LIVE for 1200 Microsoft Points.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead is winning Game of the Year awards left and right, and for good reason – the adventure game is phenomenal in almost every way. It was the kind of adaptation that we rarely see in gaming as most publishers are content with just pushing out a hastily put together mess that rides on the success of the property it’s based on instead of its own merit. Unfortunately, the newest game based on the super popular franchise isn’t inspiring much confidence with its latest trailer.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a first-person shooter coming courtesy of Terminal Reality, developers of the enjoyable Ghostbusters video game. Unlike the Ghostbusters game, however, the trailer for their latest adaptation doesn’t look to capture the feel of the property in question. Check it out for yourself below:

The real tragedy here is that the developers and creative consultants from AMC don’t seem to get the point behind The Walking Dead. The graphic novel, television series and adventure game don’t rely on zombies to instill fear or further the narrative. The real fear comes from the other surviving humans that the cast has to contend with. A generic first-person shooter could capture that kind of narrative, as the wonderful Spec Ops: The Line did in 2012, but the trailer for Survival Instinct doesn’t inspire any such confidence.

In its defense, this is only a gameplay trailer and it’s job is to show the gameplay. As far as the narrative is concerned, all we know is that the game puts players in the role of Daryl Dixon from the television series. Terminal Reality succeeded with Ghostbusters, but The Walking Dead is an entirely different beast altogether. Here’s hoping the brand isn’t diminished by AMC’s desire to create a cheap tie-in that may potentially put off any serious fan of the franchise.

UPDATE: Giant Bomb spoke to an Activision representative who said the above trailer is a fan edit pulled from footage shown on an IGN interview last week. The footage represents an early build that’s not indicative of the final game’s quality. There’s still hope that the first official gameplay trailer will feature something a bit more polished.
